  • An homage to the beautiful place in Lord Of The Rings known as Rivendell! The place where Elves live. I have not read the books, only seen the films. So go easy on me!

Rivendell is an absolute gem for its poetic lyrics and the intimate sound of the recording. This song transports the listener to Elrond’s house so you feel the comfort of safety & peace that Bilbo has in living with the Elves. I’ve been a fan of all Tolkien’s books since I read “The Hobbit” in the 1960s and this song has a special place in my heart! ❤️

This was Geddy’s song. He played the nylon string guitar and Alex was on the electric with a volume pedal and a cavern of reverb. Cheers!

Fantastic reaction, John! I'm 60, and this was the first Rush album I 'discovered' back in High School. This gorgeous, beautiful song still mists me up so many decades later.

This is one of Rush's few "prestige" pieces. They were just trying to show a softer side. I don't understand why it gets so much hate from the fans. Yeah, it didn't really work for the most part, but it's not terrible. It is what it is-- a ballad. Ballads do actually have their place, I feel, even if you're a "headbanger." And with Lord of the Rings having become so popular now, this song has been given new life.

I never understood the haters of this song either, but I've been a JRRT fan since the early '70s and picked up all the references that the song transcriber for this video missed. The words misty mountains should have been in caps and the words loud water's should have been Loudwater's. Likely the dark lord should have also been in caps. Just a bit of JRRT nerdism...
Thanks for understanding and enjoying one of my favorite songs (among many for sure :) ).

I can completely imagine Bilbo writing and singing this in Rivendell after he left the Shire for the last time. :)

Geddy on classical guitar and Alex doing the atmospheric stuff with a volume pedal (assumedly). Great reaction.

Geddy said none of them could stay a😂wake during the mixing. I'm with you, though, I love it and look forward to finding my version of Rivendell.

I read the Lord of the Rings and discovered Rush Fly By Night within the same few months when I was 13 so of course I've always loved this song, perhaps even more now that I'm 60.

That haunting guitar sound is actually a steel guitar, can you say country music.

The folksy side of Rush. I like this song although alot don't. Lord of the Rings was HUGE back then. I read the series at least three times myself.

This is a much maligned song by Rush fans, as this is not at all what we would consider more of the typical Rush sound. I admit it's not a favorite of mine, but it's a lovely ballad. Just not generally what I would want to hear when I turn on some Rush. I will give them credit for refusing to put themselves in a box, and not being afraid of a little experimentation.

I think your correct about that other instrument being a guitar, but i dont think its a pedal. It sounds to me like volume sells with a bunch of reverb.

This is the worst song in Rush’s entire catalog, it’s the musical equivalent of watching paint dry. Out of 160+ songs this is the only one I truly hate, there are others I don’t like too much but I don’t hate them.
