    As a lady of mature years, you’ve helped me decide that I will look into the Greenworks 80 self propelled mower. I was going to look at a riding mower but decided that it might be better to get a lighter battery powered mower that does not require gas. It’s bad enough I have to fill up snowblower every winter. The thought of transporting flammable substances kinda creeps me out. So, with that said, I think a walking mower might be better because I have a portion of my lawn dip down at a very steep angle. I read that riding mowers could tip over. I think I’ll take your advice on either the Greenworks 80 or Toro. I’ve had my Toro snowblower since 1996, serviced ONCE. Made very well. I’ll see which is available and go with either one! Thanks for your helpful advice!

      The EGO unit's side discharging capability with that accessory would probably rank worst of all the mowers shown. Grass doesn't like to make a 90 degree turn as it exits the rear of the machine. Lots of clogging and clumping. Honda had this type of discharge chute for it's gas mowers. It works equally poorly.

    Hey Brian Excellent review on the various battery operated mowers. I’m a small engine tech. My shop had GreenWorks Pro. We sold Toro and Snapper lines geared towards homeowners. We also deal in large commercial units. The Greenworks represented came in one day to show us the battery commercial stand on unit. Nothing less then awesome. I like my gas snapper but looking at battery unit. The GreenWorks Pro are very nice. Toro is also nice. These are what you say Heavy Duty units. I believe some of the units sold at Big box stores are under powered. They have them to accommodate people looking for non petrol units. People should do there homework before purchasing these units. Check volts and amp hour. But the better product. No one at the stores really know anything about the product lines they sell. You brought out some of the negative points. Thin Blades that flex is one. Now we get into warranty, warranty repair or just repair. Our shop repaired the products we sold. We also had repair parts.

      Thanks for the comments Joseph, yeah I'd love to see some of the greenworks pro mowers start using that thicker blade from Toro but other than that I've been impressed. Its also hard to say anything bad about that snapper 82v mower, cant wait to try their bigger version with sp. Regards to big box, thats why I do what I do. Ive been building sites and reviewing products for a decade, new to youtube though, actual genuine experience is so valuable in product reviews and actually doing stuff makes for a far better teacher. Great job sir. I just subscribed 👍. I’m looking at the Greenwork Pro 60v and 80v lines to purchase before year-end, so I appreciate your input. Not sure which one I’m leaning towards yet and haven’t entirely ruled out Ego either. I live in South Florida and have thick St Augustine turf to mow through, so I need a really powerful battery operated system.

    • @TurfMechanic

      Thanks for the kind words Kevin. I actually hesitated in making this vid because I hadn't actually tried the new greenworks 60v mower. I don't have easy access to buying it and although I could get it it was going to run me an extra hundred or so for freight shipping unless I wanted to make a 4 hour drive. Anyway, im very impressed with greenworks mowers now so I imagine the 60v line is worth it, for me im super interested in that turbo button that supposedly offers full power as much as you want. Ive never cut st Aug but I imagine it can be intense on the mower if not cut high enough, most of these battery mowers don't go extremely high so id keep that under consideration too. Eventually ill have to get that 60v unit and start looking specifically at the models that cut super high and super low.

    Great review. I got excited when Greenworks was selected. I've been stuck in FOBO Fear Of Better Options for a few months. I'm leaning toward the Greenworks Dual port, but still unsure on 80v or 60v 21" or 25"

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +2

      I havent actually mowed with the gw 25 inch or the 60v models yet but the 25 inch model features two smaller diameter blades... that means blade tip sleed will be lower so my guess is power won't be as much but obviously the draw is the wide cutting path not the raw power. Let me know what you decide on and tell me what you think!

    • @mrmrv42
      @mrmrv42 3 года назад +1

      I have the Greenworks 25 inch. It definitely saves time. It leaves a nice cut because of the wider profile. My only complaint is that it leaves some debris, leaves and sticks, behind. My old Honda 217hrx sucked up everything and did not leave any straggler blades.

    Thanks for the Toro Plug! The Toro is a beast! I am spoiled on the personal pace and the built-in mulch and bag door. I don’t even know what a mulch plug is. LoL. I just don’t know if I’m willing to give that up for the Greenworks Pro 80 Volt. Great Review overall!

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +3

      If I didn't have so many kid play things in the yard then the Toro is right up there for sure. Seriously though, all of the hard mowing jobs I've thrown at my mowers the greenworks 80v has performed with the most power without exception. For people that need power its the best I think, for big well manicured rectangle yards with few obstacles then yeah, Toro all the way 😊

    • @jtuck7090
      @jtuck7090 3 года назад +1

      Turf Mechanic I’ve had the Toro since March. I totally agree. I do have that big yard in the front and back. For the most part well manicured. Sometimes I skip a week, and it can grow a bit. The Toro powers right through it. For me, more power isn’t the biggest factor, as long as the Toro can power through it, which it has. And, I love the other features, especially the personal pace and the ease of switching from bag to mulch. Or, not having to deal with a mulch plug is a nice bonus. As far as bagging, Toro really packs the clippings in there. I mean really tight. If I had to stop and go, quite a lot, knowing the design of the Toro, as far as disengaging and reengaging the drive, that could get annoying, really quick. So, I definitely understand if you have lots of kid play things to maneuver around.

    There is a higher level Toro, the Toro Super recycler, which has a cast aluminum deck so that it won't ever rust. And this year's 2022 model has LED high beam lights, so that you can mow your grass in the dark. I want one. It also uses a plug for mulch mode, but I always mulch, so that's OK with me.

    I have a Kobalt 80v with the 6ah battery and self propulsion. It has a thumb button for the self propel instead of the bar. Runtime is very long and does a great job of cutting. It seemed to be a better option than what green works had to offer (even though it is made by greenworks, it includes a larger battery than the greenworks). I also think side discharge is too much of an important option to leave out in case you find yourself having to mow an overgrown lawn (in the case of the ego)

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the tip on the Kobalt, its been one I wanted to look at too. Big voltage and push button sp with side discharge looks better on paper than EGO so this is something I want to look at in person for sure!

    • @Skippernomnomnom
      @Skippernomnomnom 3 года назад +1

      James Varnes My only real complaint is minor. I have long sloping hills, and if the bag gets close to full going up a hill with anything but the driest grass, the self propel will shut off and you’ll have to wait a few seconds and restart the mower. I usually just empty my bag when that happens, but it’s kinda annoying. The runtime is very long and I get 2-3 mows before I need to charge it. I mow my lawn and my neighbors the same day. The mower also does a good job at mowing very overgrown grass if you’re side discharging. I had to mow my Mom’s .4 acre lot with 3 foot grass because the lawn guy kept giving excuses and the 6ah battery didn’t die until right after I completed the lot. Of course it would have mowed for a lot longer than this under better conditions. A lot of times, overgrown grass also stays wet for long periods of time, so sometimes the wet 3 foot grass would clog the discharge chute. That is any mower though. I also have the trimmer 2580-06, chainsaw 4080-06, and the blower 400B as well. I absolutely love the trimmer, but you have to be mindful of how hard you smack the bump feed system or you’ll pop the battery out. Not a big deal, but you’ll be annoyed when you do it if you’re in a hurry. The trimmer has more than enough power to cut down small foot or two tall trees with .095 line, but you will probably find yourself turning the power down for most tasks. I don’t recommend using a battery larger than the 2.5ah because it throws the balance off. The leaf blower, I mean it blows really fast and hard. No complaints, but you also need to use the 2.5ah for the same reason. The chainsaw, make sure you get the model number I listed because it has a LOT more power than the previous version. It also has enough power to run a 20 inch bar if you want to upgrade it. It uses Oregon bars and chains, so replacements are super easy to find. I recommend using the 6ah or 5ah battery on this one if you have a lot of work to do because it uses a lot of power and drains the battery really fast. It comes with a 5ah. It does make the saw a bit heavy, but it’s worth it for the extra power and runtime. The saw has plenty of power for bore cuts. Just make sure you tension the chain correctly as it doesn’t come adjusted from the factory. Some people write negative reviews for the chainsaw because of that, which is dumb because you should know to do that if you’re operating a chainsaw. Also, I don’t think the front sprocket on the bar came greased, that’s something people forget about. Lowe’s sells preloaded Oregon grease guns for a few bucks though and you’ll be on your way. I’m a big fan of that chainsaw.

      James Varnes It seems to be end of season for this product at Lowe’s. Our store currently has it down all the way to $300. That’s less than a new 6ah battery for it.

    I have a very small lawn, my lot is 5000 sq in a city. My lawn is about half that. I was considering the Tacklife that just came out. I know you mentioned 40v is not the best, but considering my small lawn and the fact that I live in a cold climate (Rhode Island), would the 40v be sufficient?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +1

      Hey Raymond, I'm actually just starting to test out some of the smaller battery mowers out there. I think you're talking about the 16" 40V Tacklife; I've never tried it but it's got a stated 3500 no load rpm speed and probably a 15" blade. Amazon listing says it's got about a 30-min run time. Doing the math it's blade tip speed is probably around 156 mph which is better than the 14" WORX I'm testing now and better than my 19" Snapper XD. If you are cutting on a middle to high setting, keeping the blade sharp, and not ever letting your grass get overgrown then that would probably be strong enough for you. The unknown variable however is how much strength does the mower offer under load and how thick is the blade itself- does it bend easily? Once you put load on it it may struggle to keep the RPM up near 3500 and your battery drain may suffer. I'm putting a video out on the WORX 14" mower in a couple weeks; the tip speed isn't as high but it's got dual 20V batteries and should last twice as long in the yard and it's got two modes, eco and turbo with the latter getting RPM speed up to 3700. Voltage in mowers I like to think of like the diameter of a hose; the higher the voltage the better they seem to be at dealing with load. For pure power then the 19" snapper is hard to beat but if you want something smaller or cheaper then I would bet the WORX mower is actually better able to handle tougher conditions than the Tacklife. Just a guess on my end though. Here's an Amazon affiliate link to the WORX mower if you want to give it a look: www.amazon.com/Worx-WG779-Capabilities-Intellicut-Batteries/dp/B07BY88V1Q/?tag=turfmechanicyt-20

      I wish Jeff; I've been wanting to get my hands on the 60v mower, the one with the turbo button, for a while now and I've never pulled the trigger. At some point it's just too many mowers for me to buy and store. Thing is I like the 80v version so much that I'm not sure if it's worth getting the 60v to compare... but even still I'm curious if the 60v on turbo will mulch better and bag clippings and leaves better. Maybe I'll get to the comparison down the road. fingers crossed.

      I'm thinking the same as you re 60v, but it is getting worrying that Greenworks is now supporting 24v, 40v, 60v, 80v, and 82v. Is the 60v line replacing the 80v line? The 82v line replacing the 80v line?

      I agree about the Hart. Used mine on 4 yards per week all summer long. Cut quality is middle of the road. A double pass to fix the stragglers leaves you with a very nice cut. Got the blower combo and the mower. 9 ah total battery 4 ah + 5ah when you purchase both. Best bang for the buck! Upgraded to Toro 22 inch vortex and the 605 cfm blower. That combo provides 8.5 ah total. 6.0 ah + 2.5 ah. So far the Toro gives an awesome cut much better than the Hart but twice the price. If your on a budget I recommend the Hart. This summer I put about 4 years of use on the Hart. Just make sure the handle is fully extended or the machine may not start.

      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +1

      Honestly I'd love to and I've thought about it but it probably wont happen any time soon unless Hart wants to send me a mower for my review. To date all mowers featured on this channel I purchased with my own money so I'm unlikely to buy more than a few extra mowers this year. The ROI for those purchases hasn't been there for me unfortunately - at least so far - so I'm hesitant to buy many more mowers. Even still, I'm leaning towards picking up a few of the tiniest battery mowers on the market to review (I already have the WORX 14") for those people with tiny yards but there's also 1-2 other full size battery mowers on my wish list too. Also, my garage is only so big. LOL

      @@TurfMechanic So, I’m curious. What are you going to do with all those lawnmowers?😁 Sell them? Or keep them as spares. I know. I had to ask.

      @@barbarajansen4912 good questions! I've been using all of them this year except for my sunjoe, the mower won't start even though the battery is fine and works in my sunjoe blower. My snapper is being used at my grandfather's house, my bigger units (Toro, yard force, and greenworks) I use periodically on my fringe yard space, and I've been using my ego and worx mowers in the main flat yard. My earthwise was sold off last summer because I couldn't find a use for it and it didn't seem worth holding onto.

    I like the toro. But I’m not a big fan of the personal pace system.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад +3

      The Toro would easily be my hands down favorite if I could use it without the Personal Pace engaged. Most of the time it's great but mowing around my kids play structures is almost impossible with it. Just being able to disengage the system would be a huge selling point for me.

      I have the Toro Recycler. I love the personal pace because I can cut the back and front yard really quick. I don’t have the obstacles in my yard that Bryant has to deal with, so it’s ideal for my yard. The personal pace is very intuitive once you get the hang of it.

    I have a small yard. Mostly suction is important with small oak leaves stuck in the grass. You said toro is the best at this but how does the greenworks and snapper do? I don’t want to buy a mower that can’t suck the leaves out of my grass.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 года назад

      Neither green works or snapper impressed me with suction. Ego has a high lift blade you can buy extra that should help with that considerably.

    Do you think the self-propelled feature is necessary? I accidentally just bought the Greenworks 21" 80V 4Ah PUSH model but it's not self-propelled. If it's too heavy, my elderly parents will not be able to use it. I'm so sick and tired of watching all these videos and reading reviews that I'm ready to throw in the towel and just buy a corded lawn mower! I don't feel like spending $900 CAD on a lawnmower. Especially if it ends up breaking down just after the warranty period, as if on cue, lol.

    To viewers:buy a gas mower. I have a snapper push mower that I’ve been using commercially for 15 years, and i bought it used. It’s made me hundreds of thousands of dollars and it’s still running strong.

      Turf Mechanic agreed and reading some of the comments and seems most people cut smaller plots with battery mowers, and even i will admit, for that application they make perfect sense.

    Which one mulches the leaves the best?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 года назад

      That's a test I didn't do last year. I tested bagging the leaves but not mulching. If you used the EGO Select Cut mower with the tri-cut mulching blade and set the self-propelled speed very slow then it would probably be one of the best at mulching of the battery options but I wouldn't know for sure without testing. Hope that helps some at least.
