I've been a tennis pro at country clubs for about 15 yrs. It's always been amazing to me how many new model racquets we sell to our membership. Any time a new model comes out, members hit with it once, like it and an impulse purchase is made. We have members who probably own 8 different racquets from last 10 yrs. We also do demo racquet lessons, where members book an hr private and literally try every demo racquet we have available, and during this time providing these I'm just shaking my head, saying to myself "It doesn't matter which racquet you use, if you don't fix that swing". They think paying top dollar for the latest equipment is going to automatically raise their game......

No mention of swing weight ? It’s the biggest determination after stiffness as to whether a racquet will work for me.
Wanted to keep it simple for this upload, I'll definitely dive into swing weight in the future

U must admit searching for a racquet to suit your game style just really sucks! If your not using the same sting at the same tension than you really only get a vague idea of the differences as the string setup make a huge difference. Going on a string journey is another journey once you settle on a racquet, full poly? hybrid poly, mono filament or co polyester or how about gut or multifilament hybrid etc.
Hmm. I am 75 year old male and weigh 130 lbs. Still play all USTA age categories from 18+ to 65+. Been using a ProKennex PSE weighing over 13 oz for many years and still my go to racket. Have others from from Prince, Head, and Wilson all with lead tape added. I like them all but still go back to the PSE as my favorite.
Ian Westermann, I am so appreciative of your assessment of all of the Diadem NOVA rackets! I've played recreational and USTA for 12 years, and I've never owned a new racket. As soon as I watched every minute of your assessment, I ordered the NOVA Lite and NOVA Team demo rackets and used them last night in my final USTA match of the season. Have you tried the old babolat pure drive 2009 gt and do you have thoughts on it? in your video you said racquets havent had big changes in the last 10 years so that means post 2009 there were some big changes until 2013/14 so is that racquet considered "old" technology wise?
Also not from the USA and i am just wondering is there any global online store that sells(not from second source) older racquets(10+ years old)?

I hit with that racquet back when it came out but not since then, I'd have to fire it up again to give you some thoughts. I'm sure it's a great frame!
The '09 Pure Drive was a special frame. Tons of top spin. I used the 2012 quite a bit, too, but never any models beyond it. Myself and other players felt they had tinkered with what made it so good.
I'm still using my ProKennex Copper Ace from ca. 1985, which is older than myself. And quite honestly, I prefer it to all the other rackets I've played with, like Babolat PD, PS90 and RF97. The better I got at tennis, the cheaper my "new" rackets become. My latest racket is a free broken Dunlop Force 98 from 2013 that I glued back together using epoxy and carbon fibre fabric and the spin is still pretty nice.
Then I applied the same logic to skiing and bought a pair of 1980s' straight skis. Big mistake. I ate sht the whole day falling and wrestling the skis. Oops.

Thanks for the video. I am happy with the old Prince racket I have, but I do wonder if I could get better results by getting a heavier racket. I find I hit the racket's frame fairly often (more often than my peers at least), so I'm afraid that a smaller head size is just going to make that problem worse. I also have a tough time demo-ing rackets because I always hit worse, and it's difficult to tell if I would eventually hit much better after getting used to the changes.
You can maybe try the pure aero tour. « Big » head size with heavier weight. Or even the Völkl V8 pro or head speed pro!
I use a prince o3 for the past 18 years. I tried all the top new age tennis Raquets on demo for a week. Not only can I not feel a benefit at a 4.0 level, the only thing I feel is more resistance from not having the ports, so I swing slower.

Hey Ian, Do racquet frames degrade over time? My racquet are 5-6 yrs old and I feel like it’s time to replace them. I play 2-3 times a week at 4.0 level.
Yes, after a certain number of flexes the materials naturally lose some of their "snappiness" over time. That doesn't necessarily mean they're "bad", simply that the feel changes slightly. If you continue liking how an old frame feels there's nothing wrong with it!
Love your video!! After playing tennis for over 20+ years and playing for the same racquet for almost 15+ year now., I realized if you keep your equipment well then it will last longer!
I would believe that switching to the Wilson clash forst generation significantly improved my game, will I buy series 2 or 3 ? No, but there is indeed changes once in a while technology has an impact.
So glad you found what works best for you! Seems like a lot of people with arm issues liked that racquet, was that the case for you?
Of all the modern racquets, the only difference I could feel is the weight and head size, and obviously string and string tension make a difference. Other than that, I can play with any racquet. If on certain day I make more mistakes than usual, it's because of me.
I am an intermediate player, so I reckon other intermediate players (vast majority of club players) who are fussy about racquets are just looking for something to blame.
If you had to classify a Wilson Blade as an all court, net centric, baseliner etc, which would you say, and which of these frames would you say is closest to it?
It's got a high weight (relative to modern racquets) but not very balanced towards the handle (4pts) so I'd lean more towards "baseliner centric", personally. The Nova + would feel most like it.
Diadem insiders push the Elevate as a competitor to the Blade. The Nova competes with power racquets like the Pure Drive. Both are fine racquets.
Almost all professional players use repainted Pro Stock racquets that hasn't changed in over 20 years.
I roll my eyes when I read about all these "new technologies" with all these flashy names. I just try a racquet out to see if it feels good, if I get enough power, spin, if my arm does not hurt, etc. I played for about 30 years with a Pro Staff 6.1 Classic (361 grams strung) that to me always felt better than anything new that came out. I have been using newer frames now because I wanted to use something a little bit lighter, but I couldn't care less about marketing. I just try them and customize them a bit and good to go.
The 6.1 classic is legendary!
Larger head size alone creates more power as there is more leverage due to longer strings... down size generally less control subject to the string pattern so 18 x 20 will help but on rare occurrence some 16 x 19s have a tighter pattern like Ezone's
Given that all the racket dimensions other than total weight and balance are the same, would it make sense to start with the lightest and add weight as needed to mimic features of all the heavier ones? Better yet, arrive at the weight, balance, swing weight best suited to your current level. Great video btw.

I play with a blx tour 90 Wilson and it gives me all I want. I have demoed the newer Wilson pro staff and it feels great. I don't care for the blade too much, but the aero pro is marvelous but stiff.

I started with a Slazenger wood racquet then an 85 inch pro staff a few years with a ProKennex Redondo then to the version 1 Pro Staff RF 97. I've tried countless frames and strings over the years and it is a matter of preference. The important thing is trying different things to find out more. And one can't discount getting a deal on older models that are still new. ☮️

The RA (flex rating) of 69 is pretty high, right up there with Babolat Pure Drive & Aero. Hopefully there's some good old mumbojumbo, high-tech dampening stuff in there. 😅

Been playin my circa 2000 (Prince Precision Response Ti) frames since then....Haven't found anything better for S/V and I've demo'd everything.
Same headsize, same stiffness, and same string patterns but different weights and balances? Sounds like my 3 wilson blades!
5 years is all your really going to get out of a carbon fibre racquet. Every thermal cycle causes resin to fibre stresses. We notice this in skis. Water and snow. The ski softens and eventually fails. A new racquet will always feel better because the dampening technologies haven’t age hardened and the carbon fibre is in the best condition. People also don’t restring their old racquet before they test a new racquet so they compare a racquet with dead strings versus a new racquet with new strings.
Vcore shaped shafts really helps with stability and Wilson's old PWS system was pretty good for torsion stability.
Why did they move away from it, then?

Andy Roddick used a frying pan and he beat an amateur who used a regular racquet. You should still get a racquet that suits you instead of a frying pan, though.

this is the racquet of the year,best of the bunch has it all , near perfection in stock form , for me for my game its perfect , it makes me love tennis again. seem familiar ? yes its marketing gimmicks of the favorite tennis racquets reviewer folowed by a link.after 6 months they didnt even play with that racquet. the best tehnology i guarantee to have results is 10000 repetitions,after that racquet will not even matter

Hi Ian, i am completely confused by this video... I watched on the premice that i agree that many of the new rackets that are are coming out now are sold by snake oil salesman and many RUclips sites are being paid bucket loads to get rackets out the door.... Then this becomes an advert for diadem? Look i know you are not like a tennis warehouse or tennis spin BUT i think you have just stuck with the diadem demo and killed the brand slander

I’ve found New racket technology that flexes at the throat does change the way the ball launches off the stringbed. Not always better for me.

Dude any retailer worth their weight will tell you that the shelf life of a tennis racquet is three years because of the breakdown of the molded graphite fibres in the frame. It's ironic you hold a Wilson racquet at the opening of the video in that their sticks play like they haven't changed since they initiated the graphite Pro Staff. As far as shilling for Diadem I've tested them through a friend and the lightness with the weight in the handle is great for rec and conventional players but consistent players need certain balance points through the racquet. Hope you paid or a good endorsement deal for your efforts.🎾👍🤘

If you don't understand the mechanics of this sport, the technology won't matter. But once you do and you're on the road to utilise that knowledge, it's your understanding of the Science and Technology of this sport that will give you that variance in margin required to stand you apart from the rest and make most of that knowledge. That is true in any level and even more important at the pro level. In other words, If you know, you know. Just ask Gustavo Kuerten what Luxilon Big Banger gave him. He'll tell you "2 French Opens and a World Championship". He knew when the rest didn't. Stagnation is Death.

I tried it and it was very unforgiving if you missed the sweet spot and lots of vibration but maybe differs strings or tension would have given better results

I'm a victim of falling for the whole "this racket will improve my game substantially" gimmick.
I have two $260 (at the time) rackets and two $270 rackets.
You know what I learned the hard way? My tennis coach was right. You can buy all the rackets you want but not the skill to go with them.
Dont fall for the gimmicks like I did and get to the court and practice. That's what I tell my students.
