Songs Of Their Own - #5 "Brown-Eyed Women" Keller Williams

- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. We began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of our favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participant Keller Williams gave his interpretation of “Brown-Eyed Women.”
“Brown-Eyed Women” (or as the typo on Europe ‘72 displayed, “Brown-Eyed Woman”) entered the Grateful Dead rotation August 24, 1971 at Chicago’s Auditorium Theater. Sung by Jerry Garcia, who wrote the tune with Robert Hunter, “Brown- Eyed Women” tells the ill-fated tale of the bootlegging Bigfoot County dwellers Jack and Delilah Jones. The Dead regularly played the song up until July 6, 1995 at Riverport Amphitheatre near St. Louis, the second to last stop on their final tour.
Terrapin Crossroads again provided the setting to record Williams’ version of “Brown- Eyed Women.” KW was in town to participate in the 4/20 House Party on April 20, joining Phil Lesh & Friends along with with Jackie Greene, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford. Though not performed at the 4/20 party, Keller was well-versed when it came to “Brown-Eyed Women” having played the song live regularly for years.

I love that Keller ALWAYS makes a cover his own. One of a kind artist.
Most underrated guitarist, and musician, of his generation.
Luther Dickinson as well.
💯💯
Just like Michael Hedges. So few know. If more did…
Seems like a decent human being as well.
You just never know what Keller will play, or how he will interpret it at any given moment! He's a master....
Love you Keller. Stay safe in the world. You're an international treasure.
One of my favorite pieces of music I've ever heard!!! All 23 are die hard American Idol fans I'll betchya.
Keller is one of the greatest gifts musically and spiritually in 2022..I wish more could see it. Good lucks friends, always stay positive.
No reason to cover a song if you don't put your own twist on it. This is awesome! Really incredible.
Agree and disagree... Appreciate this cover but besides some embellishments and a little faster tempo structurally it's the same as the Dead played it. I'm all for covers and play a bunch myself, but I think if you are going to cover Dead songs it should like a Dead song to a certain extent.
@@austinknowlton1783 I dunno if that’s the intent of this project.
@@austinknowlton1783 I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but Jerry never played a song the same way twice. He would have LOVED this version..keep your mind open always friend. It's why he was great, try and emulate that part of him listening to the covers. That's the only way to keep the dead alive
@@scottharrington4683 lol do you even play? Bet you aren't even old enough to have ever seen Jerry Garcia with your own two eyes. I have.
So glad this music is still going
Wowzers
LOVE YOU KELLER
This guy is a MASTER.
well you gotta respect a man who ignores string clipping..always a sign of a good player..enjoyed it
Probably my favorite dead cover song Keller does, love this!! Way to gather all my bluegrass heroes!!
30 years ago I was at Prep School. My class mate was pretty good guitar picker. He would play and a small group would gather round and sing :)....when I’m asked my favorite Dead song my answer is always the same “the ones I sang together with my friends”...thank you for the memories
Keller is a beast! Love it
Nicely done dude, Jerry would have loved this. Glad I stumbled on it.
One of my top 3 GD tunes
This is the song of our families. Love.
Dialed the funk to 11 and poured gas on the bluegrass , he took the best parts of OG BEW and purified them into this jamtastic piece of ear candy
Well said.
Great guitar work
What a fantastic cover
Hunter/Garcia are reunited now. R.I.P. Eternal LOVE.
simply amazing
Love the dead but usually not into Brown Eyed Women. Amazing version. Makes it a much better song.
Love that raw sound. Great rendition!
This is one of the best Dead covers I've ever heard. And I've heard an ass of them.
really, really, good.
Hell of a fella, that Keller.
So smiley. . . bet he's got more than a few brown-eyed notches on his bedpost.
Thanks for that!
So damn good!
Hands down the best!
This is a freaking great job
Is there a musician anywhere who is happier than Keller? (btw, nice cover with some real nice chops on the guitar!)
Killer cover Keller!
Great dead tune! So much emotion
Hey! I know that tune!
What a jam!
This is nuts. Congrats man.
When your playing a song by the dead solo it makes sense to add a lot of notes. Think about jerry phil Bobby kieth all adding the little things that make this song as dynamic as it is. Not easy to do in a solo acoustic performance, but Keller kinda nails it here. But that's just like, my opinion man.
That's groovy 🌠
if you toured in the 90s you prob came across keller in the lot doing his thing
Bob Hart Yep, also catch him in those bars with soul. Idk if he still plays in bars, I just know they tore the one down that he used to come to in my hometown.
Mike Hendricks yup. In 1998 at Clarkson University I bummed him a cig and later smoked a bowl with him in my friends bus without even realizing who he was. When I saw him on the stage later I shat a brick.
The man is extremely humble and so insanely talented it’s crazy. He can make any song his own, beautiful musician this see live.
this man a strange harmonic bubbling out of control willie speeding down a strange mountain I aint never seen before
Damn, Keller, tore it up homie
I saw he was touring a liitle. Infinity Hall (north) in Connecticut. Take my word, best venue. Middle of nowhere. Get ready for church.
Fredericksburg represent
KW is a rhythmic Jedi
23 people had a funkectomy
Kevin Schulte 47 now! What the fuuuuuuuu.....!!??
That saddle pickup hes usin is saddle sounding.he needs one o our pickups ....
10 thumbs down !? that's fricken nuts! great job Keller!
+Keith Poisant Sr. as they say in Jamaica... eediatss!
Cliche comment but not sure how anyone could dislike this.
Anyone know what type playing/picking he’s doing? Or is it just his style of playing? I really wanna add some of this to my playing.
Some flatpicking, sweep picking and just keller
he gets the sound by playing close to the bridge. besides that its just crazy picking
Hours upon hours upon hours of messing around on the guitar
You might want to check out Leo Kottke and John Fahey. I’ve always thought that Keller may have been influenced by these guys, in terms of guitar playing
Tumble down shack out in Bigfoot County
Snowed so hard, the roof caved in
Delilah Jones went to meet her God
The Old Man never was the same again.
Am I the only one that doesn't like the sound of new strings?
What kind of person thumb downs this!!
Noice.
its too complicated
So "THIS" is what Jack Black is up to these days...
Better than the Dead did it! Stellar performance!
martin sextonesque
Tucker carlson is good at guitar
Don't know this guy, but if I had to guess, yup, he's reached that point in life where he's become a caricature of himself. Ahh...don't mind me, this guy is awesome and really captures the spirit of the song. Sometimes first impressions can be misleading. I watched the full tune now and he's won me over. I'm just a bluegrass wannabe.
Man this guy can play, I just wish he wouldn't as much as he does. Too much ornamentation during the verses. Overall it's a great song and he's definitely talented!
Lots of string buzz. Either raise the action, or don't pick/strum so hard. Great performance otherwise.
I'll let him know what you said here
Not a great transition to big foot county, hate to say it
Constructive criticism
Lol ok
@@chevy66driver I was a little tipsy, my bad.
To "wanky" for my liking. Great hair though! 😎
too much
I love this song but....just because you can play a lot of notes doesn't mean the song calls for it. For me it's distracting from the heart of the song.
Lang Waters quit listening to Keller covers then! he's not famous for original music or singing, he's famous because he can friggin shred!
The guy is one of those guys who's really good, but doesn't know when to stop or know when is the time to just chill. If there was a drummer, a rhythm guitarist, and/or a bassist, I think it'd be a much more balanced rendition
I've seen him live both solo and with bands many times and he can do it all.
This is not good. His guitar sounds like it's coming through an 2 inch AM radio speaker and it's just a completely forced and uninspired version. I like some of Keller's stuff- this just isn't up to par
MRBABAR I see your point but.. listen to a few more Keller songs babar, this is his classic sound. He blends effects with a dry signal volume pedal, he has everything running direct. seriously! no amp at all. what you're hearing is pure matrin twang!
cheers
are you deaf?!
You know nothing about baseball.
I could not disagree more
