this is just on time. I wanted something safe to spray on the weeds in my yard, because I don't believe in using chemical weed killers because I realized it was killing the baby rabbits, and other poor animals that lived in my yard. Today while watering my roses I watched about seven very tiny baby bees go from rose bud to rose bud which made me happy and sad because they are dying at an alarming rate out of our selfish desire to have a beautiful lawn regardless of the cost to the environment. I don't have the prettiest lawn but I have one of the healthiest and I have the wild life to prove it.
Exactly what weed killer was killing the baby rabbits? Another point: you did not see "baby bees". You might have seen individuals of a small species of bee. Worker bees are fully grown adults. The queen lays eggs, the eggs hatch into larvae, the larvae pupate inside comb cells and emerge as adult bees. Oh, do you know what the biggest natural food sources of bees are? Dandelion, clover, thistle, and several other "weeds" that we humans habitually destroy as "noxious" invaders in our lawns and roadsides. We destroy natural habitat and wonder where the bees go.
I have a decorative stone drive way & some large rock gardens with mulch. I have spent to much time fighting weeds. So every weekend I go to war on them. I have a 2 gallon pressure sprayer. I add 1 1/2 quarts of 5% white Vinegar. 1 1/4 Box of Table Salt, and fill with water to full line. Then I give a good healthy squirt of the cheapest dish soap I can find. Seal container and shack well. Pump up and go to war. Effective, Cheap, Safe and it works. I have been doing this for years. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Roundup is a Potassium-Salt Based Acid. Vinegar is Acetic Acid. Using Vinegar, Salt, plus dish soap to act as a surfactant has very similar toxicity for plants as Roundup for very similar results.
I've used a ready to use vinegar weed killer and then the next day came back with a week torch and burned out the dried up weeds. It really helps and make it look better.
For dandelions, I found it appears to kill them, but it only dries out the leaves, and the dandelions come back in a few days. Used 30% vinegar, salt, and Dawn as a surfactant.
Costco sells table salt in a 3 box pack. I keep it in my garage and pour it in the cracks of my patio or driveway whenever I see a weed and it works like a charm. The salt pours easily straight from the box & there's nothing to mix.
I use bleaching powder, the algae and weeds haven't grown in last 2 years. Bleach will practically dehydrate the weed by sucking all its water converting it into HCl(hydro chloric acid). Leave it in for a couple of days and it will penetrate and kill it's roots also. A long term solution I adopted for algae and weeds growing on my roof where water stagnates some time due to rains and subsequent dust and moisture situation, due to drainage issues.
Two suggestions for those small weeds growing in path / pavers...1...they pull out really easily which costs you nothing..or 2..use near boiling water or water you can keep close to boiling...trickle it onto the weeds and you get the same result as the vinegar.
The strongest, most concentrated Vinegar available is known as Glacial Acetic Acid. "Glacial" refers to its high concentration of Acetic Acid such that it forms crystals resembling ice at slightly below room temperature. Caution must be used with rubber gloves and a respirator, because Glacial Acetic Acid will burn skin on contact and cause lung irritation if its fumes are inhaled. Using a droplet of Glacial Acetic Acid from a dropper will kill a weed. Glacial Acetic Acid can be diluted with water to make whatever less concentrated Vinegar that is needed.
I used a 50% solution of White Vinegar; I sprayed the mix on to a concrete path which was heavily inundated with thick moss. The moss went from luscious green to brown and dead in 24 Hrs.
I tried you blend last year on my path ways and driveway cracks. It worked great. And they are gone for good. I'm going to try on my plants areas not hitting the plants of course. Thanks for the great updates.
I used the diy 30% vinegar, salt, and soap solution. Spayed driveway weeds, next day all weeds brown as toast. Two weeks later the same weeds were green and happy again. Expensive lesson.
30% vinegar isn't going to hurt the bushes. At most, it will kill or burn the leaves it touches. So you can be a little sloppy and it's ok. It does smell for a day or two. And for tough weeds, it won't kill to the roots, thus you'll need applications two or even several times. I haven't found the need to add salt or soap. I just buy "agricultural vinegar" (usually 30%). I've had good results even diluting it to 20%. Using it on a hot, sunny day is important.
IDK about weeds, I tried to kill some english ivy that had overgrown at a customer's house and it did nothing, that cleaning vinegar (along with salt and surfactant) did the trick

Ordered some and it works amazing. After 17 hours weeds looked like they were dying. After 24 hours they were brown and dead. Great stuff to use around a garden so no Roundup gets in the soil !!!
Roundup (glyphosate) is inert in the soil. You can plant in the soil immediately after spraying with no ill effects. And Roundup is only absorbed by the leaves, not by the roots. And about 10-12 cents an ounce for generic. One ounce will mix one gallon. 10-12 cents a gallon compared to $23 a gallon.
@@santa1767 I get that it's cheaper but from the lawsuit: Claims are being reviewed against Bayer/Monsanto over elevated cancer risks linked to Roundup exposure. Over $2 Billion in judgments have already been awarded and thousands of victims may still be eligible. - I will pass on using it

I appreciate that. I experimented with the 5% and it will hurt some weeds but most never end up dying or you have to apply 5x as much, but that also adds a lot mroe salt. This concentration seems perfect. The small bottle lasts a lot longer than you would think too.
I've been using a vinegar and water mix for years, 50-50 mix and, it's cheap and very effective. _Now one thing you didn't touch on is that the vinegar WILL bleach/discolor the sidewalks and pavers to a noticeable degree._
Any vinegar will do, (cheap and cheerful) and its the acetic acid that burns the weed. Never add anything else to the mix. Vinegar mostly only damages the greenery, (burndown herbicide) but does kill off some of the more delicate weeds. There is no need to get any expensive vinegar as it all achieves exactly the same effect any cheap shop bought will do. Never add salt, bicarb, dish soap or anything else. Just vinegar . As well as being a waste of time and money it will also damage the growing medium and impact the environment. If you find you need to use vinegar on growing beds instead of digging out the weed and killing it you can use vinegar to burn it and use a sponge or paint brush to spot weed. remember any old vinegar will do. the acetic acid burn just takes a little longer to take affect . Extensive trials have been done on the use of vinegar and though it does have some environmental impact it also cant be used near waterways, streams, rivers, ponds. Just remember cheap is just as good and never add anything else.
I go ahead and pull them while alive so I can get the root, and then use a water bottle, like you use when bike riding, and pour a bit in the hole. It has worked great for me for years now. Love your lawn. Is it tall fescue? It's my favorite for my lawn.
30% vinegar sounds great. Howard Garrett (The Dirt Doctor) has a time tested recipe that includes adding orange oil or d'limonene to the mixture to make it more effective. He also has a note about salt being very damaging to the environment, so it would be great if that wasn't needed.
Obviously this is an eco-friendly and kid/pet friendly alternative to Roundup or Crossbow. I think this is a great option if you have a small to large suburban lawn, but if you have an acre or more along with large flowerbeds then these options can be pricey. When considering much larger lawns or flowerbeds would you recommend Roundup/Crossbow or do you have another suggestion?
I would think that you could buy the 30% vinegar and then reduce it to half it's strength by using half water and half vinegar, this way it would still be 15% strength. Just a thought. Oh, and to reduce any possibility of harming bees, I like to spray about half an hour or so before sunset. Usually, when it starts getting dark they do not visit the flowers anymore.
Can concentrate the acetic acid by putting a (plastic) bottle with ordinary vinegar into the freezer. Much of the water freezes, and the liquid concentrate can be poured out....
I got some stuff from a landscaper. He told me to be careful with it and to dilute like 100:1 I probably do 50:50 lol it takes about 3-4 days to start working. I done my whole drive way 6 months ago and still no weeds 👌
So you decided not to take advice from the guy you're paying to know, and to use it at a much greater strength, and you have no idea if following his advice would have worked, but are ok telling the comment section on RUclips that if you use poison at many magnitudes greater than the strength recommended by a paid professional it will work to kill weeds?
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I was surprised how quickly it worked! When your weeds die in the sidewalks/flower beds, do you pull them or leave them there? I always fear spreading seeds. I love your channel! It’s so thorough and concise!
It works very well. I didn't pull them, they pretty much shrivel up and are gone but you can always hit them with the weed hacker if you won't top get rid of the remains.
Silver Cymbal thank you so much! So glad I found your channel. After watching your aerating video I’m going to try to do it now. Is summer a bad time to do it? I mean, other than that it’s intolerably hot?
@@rosemarynguyen6793 Be careful with super hot times, that can cause issues. If you water a lot you can work around it but ideally you might want to wait for the end of summer early fall.
Thanks for the video. First time learning how to take care of my new lawn. Will this 20% vinegar kill Dallisgrass? I have a big problem of Dallisgrass on my new lawn which is round 8 months old.
Thank you. Let me know how it works for you I had very low expectations for this. and expected that you would need to use 1/2 the bottle for a couple of weeds. This was a very nice surprise.
@@hikeskool It was ok, but I felt that I had to use a lot to get the result I wanted. Because of this, for the past few years, I have been using the other mix that he mentioned (although I use 45% acidity) and making it myself. I have to kill off a neighbor's poison ivy once per year and I mix a batch and spray that and still have some left over for other areas that I used the ViNEGAR product on. It is more expensive, but I can mix the amount that I need. The poison ivy is dried up in about 8 hours and I clear it out the next day.
Vinegar contains acetic acid, so spraying it on weeds will kill them. But, it’s not effective on weeds with intricate root systems. According to the University of Illinois Extension, vinegar only treats the part of the plant it comes into contact with; this means perennial weeds return. Also, the vinegar in your cupboard isn’t strong enough - you’d need to pour gallons on the weed or purchase a herbicidal vinegar, which isn’t labeled for use in all states. Pouring boiling water over weeds has the same issue - boiling water will never reach deep enough into the root structure to fully kill the weed. It’s also important to know that these homemade weed killers may do more harm than good. Using salt and borax over long periods of time can also seriously damage your soil. Boron does not break down like conventional weed killers and repeated applications can cause barren soil, according to the extension. Salt also destroys the soil’s delicate structure and is mobile - meaning it can move to other areas of your lawn or garden, damaging the plants you want to keep. Vinegar is in the same boat; it damages the soil because as an acid, it lowers the pH.
The vinegar doesn't kill the roots. If you want to kill the weeds permanently, boil the roots. Make a hole down along the root, stick in a funnel, pour boiling water down the hole. Do this when the weeds are thirsty for water, they will take up the boiling water and cook themselves. That weed will not be back in two months or two years. It's a little more labor-intensive but it's permanent.
Tried soap, vinegar and salt etc, takes too long and half the time doesn't work so instead simply boil a kettle of water to the fullest than pour over any weeds, they shrink and turn brown in 1-3 days. Sadly you need to do this weekly or more to keep them at bay but at least its better then salt or vinegar which can damage stone, brick and cement.
okay to use this mixture in open areas and on concrete...... but be warned that brushing it even lightly on weeds will kill those weeds.......but will do collateral damage to the grass around the weed.
Good information, especially on the differences in vinegar. I am definitely going to use this method in my immediate fenced in back yard in order to be more pet friendly, however, I would need a 55 gallon drum of this vinegar for the rest of my property. I really wish that it was cheaper.
Just treat your lawn spring, summer and fall, seeding in bare spots & eventually - approximately 2 years - your grass will take back the lawn. There is no need for weed killer or chemicals that are harmful to pets, wildlife & humans. Just takes a little patience.
I use a 1/4 cup of organic dish soap to 1 gallon of vinegar. It works great because I need some weeds on a hillside that is susceptible Maude sliding. But the next season the weed grow 1 1/2 feet high instead of 4-5 feet. Much easier to weed wack. And if you cut the weeks before they seed it cuts down on the weeds spreading to the rest of the yard.
To kill all vegetation in walkways, driveways and other areas where you don’t want any living thing to grow again, mix two cups ordinary table salt with one gallon of white vinegar. I use Salt brine (30 pounds of ground rock salt to 10 gallons of water) has given good control if persistently used, either sprayed on the leaves or saturating the soil about the roots after cutting off the tops of the plants. If new growth appears, repeat the treatment at intervals of two weeks. You need to use one quart concentrated salt solution per each separation line between the sidewalk blocks.
Tenacity cant be beat for weed control in the lawn, but for beds if plants are tight it can be risky. Vinegar is a great option for beds since it is lower strength, you can also use a plastic or cardboard shield when spraying to ensure nothing gets on the other plants
Please do a little research on what using vinegar actually does to the soil over time. While it temporarily kills the plant when you keep applying vinegar to the same spot you’re killing everything in the soil.
On 29 seconds of the video,it is called 'Amrul' in local language in some parts of India. It is edible and good for health. We make 'chutney soup' of this.......this is expensive too in market .....so next time do a lil research and try this 'Amrul' weed 👍
Thank you for sharing this product. I have some questions, I’m trying to avoid chemicals outside so it’s completely safe for my family. Would you say this is completely safe after being applied? Also is there a good liquid (or non liquid) solution to spray on the on that is natural/organic to kill weeds but not grass. That’s my burning question!
Thx for the tip. If I spray that on the weeds in my garden and then I cover it with good soil and then I plant my seedlings on top of everything, is that going to kill them?
When spraying more than 50% is being wasted (with this small bottle sprayer). The nozzle needs to be more concentrated, focused, highly directional. Maybe a different applicator would work to reduce the waste.
Great video - thanks!! Would you have any suggestions for spider mites on pepper plants? I really need some help with that. I've tried soap and water - my plants dropped a ton of leaves... don't know what else to use?
Perfect .....Do you have like a Sprayer that will cover most of these weeds...without me going from one to so many weeds at a time? I also would like to know if that vinegar solution is available anywhere ....and what brand is the best....
I would advise that you do not use this wearing shorts and sandals. I did and suffered 9 days of agony with burning pain where the mixture had got on my feet. And this was with 5% vinegar. Please wear jeans or similar and boots to protect your feet. The weeds were killed so that was some compensation for the sleepless nights with burning and itching feet.

Roundup is linked to cancer & is dangerous to the environment
I would think that you could buy the 30% vinegar and then reduce it to half it's strength by using half water and half vinegar, this way it would still be 15% strength. Just a thought. Oh, and to reduce any possibility of harming bees, I like to spray about half an hour or so before sunset. Usually, when it starts getting dark they do not visit the flowers anymore.
Place card boards on your playground and then rubber mulch !! or any mulch that you prefer , it will help out a lot.
This really works weeds were turning 4 hrs after spraying
Does it kill grass
@@baharv4575 yes but it also kills everything it comes in contact with
I used your vinegar, salt, and soap method last summer on weeds in the driveway cracks. Applied last June In RI. Weeds haven't come back yet.
Good stuff! That's great to hear! Thanks for letting me know.
My mom uses a mixture of regular white vinegar and dish soap and it's just as effective. Maybe it's the type of soap.
Tip: Do not spray it near concrete surfaces, it leaves ugly stains.
Thanks, I have a concrete driveway with weeds in one of the joints. You just saved me some trouble!
@@dcam91 Don't ask me how I know.... :]
It's not your fault bud, but once again, it's not allowed in Canada. I think when they legalized weed here, there was a misunderstanding 😕
Ballot box-better choices.
Even in communist countries, you can buy vinegar.
Silver Cymbal oh thank you so much for letting me know! We are definitely in consistent dry mid-90’s here in Dallas. I need to wait.
@@SilverCymbal why is it bad to do in hot summer? I need it the most around this time, please let me know. Thanks!
That Silver Cymbal headquarters is EPIC!!!
I'm glad you liked it! My favorite part is the flymo out front!

nice point about vinegar acidity strength!
i didn't get good results from the homedepot stuff brand which I thought was supposed to be good. I'll try this then.
Thanks for the video. First time learning how to take care of my new lawn. Will this 20% vinegar kill Dallisgrass? I have a big problem of Dallisgrass on my new lawn which is round 8 months old.
Is it because the weeds die of fright because they think their in a salad?
Only if you mix the vinegar with olive oil.
What are the ingredients and measurements to mix for the home made vinegar weed killer?
A video on how to make weed killer, that does not tell you how to make it! :}
A torch also works good for those stubborn weeds in the cracks of the driveway if you live in the south.
It grows back just as fast.
Is it safe to use next to trees and bushes meaning will it seep into the ground and hit the roots or does it only affect the sprayed plants
Is there any way you could give us a tour of your property? Your yard and house seems beautiful with lots of privacy.
I really appreciate that, I will see what I can do, things are starting to finally warm up so it will be better for that now. Thanks
As always - great content - very informative! About to order this product - thanks!
Thank you. Let me know how it works for you I had very low expectations for this. and expected that you would need to use 1/2 the bottle for a couple of weeds. This was a very nice surprise.
Happy with the results?
@@hikeskool It was ok, but I felt that I had to use a lot to get the result I wanted. Because of this, for the past few years, I have been using the other mix that he mentioned (although I use 45% acidity) and making it myself. I have to kill off a neighbor's poison ivy once per year and I mix a batch and spray that and still have some left over for other areas that I used the ViNEGAR product on. It is more expensive, but I can mix the amount that I need. The poison ivy is dried up in about 8 hours and I clear it out the next day.
@@daveclark6324 very cool, thank you👌
Vinegar contains acetic acid, so spraying it on weeds will kill them.
@Steve Parks …. So what do you recommend using to kill weeds?
Great video.... What is the formula/receipt for your DIY weed killer.
Michael from Canada
How would this affect seeding a lawn? How long should I wait before putting down seed?
Vinegar, dawn soap, and epsom salt did the trick on Poison Ivy
10 percent cleaning vinegar at hardware works as good as 30.
I've used this to control weeds in seem between driveway and sidewalk.
Great to hear, its perfect for that
okay to use this mixture in open areas and on concrete......
but be warned that brushing it even lightly on weeds will kill those weeds.......but will do collateral damage to the grass around the weed.
Yes, it works. My back yard St Augustine had grown up and around the bottom so thick and I sprayed it with vinegar. And waited for it to grow back???
So it's a *total vegetation* killer and not a 'weed' killer.
All weed killers will kill anything. grass ,plants ‘flowers etc!
Just sprinkle weeds with baking soda, and walk away.
I use regular white vinegar and it looks great!!!
Consider mixing 1/2 cup orange oil, 2 qt vinegar, and tsp of soap instead
To kill all vegetation in walkways, driveways and other areas where you don’t want any living thing to grow again, mix two cups ordinary table salt with one gallon of white vinegar. I use Salt brine (30 pounds of ground rock salt to 10 gallons of water) has given good control if persistently used, either sprayed on the leaves or saturating the soil about the roots after cutting off the tops of the plants. If new growth appears, repeat the treatment at intervals of two weeks. You need to use one quart concentrated salt solution per each separation line between the sidewalk blocks.
May be good to see what weeds are herbs that you can eat and taste good to!
The ones with thorns for sure! Great eaten fresh and raw!
Always Great content this is definitely in my top three channels on RUclips
Glad you enjoy it!
Vinegar and salt. It's a very temporary fix. The weeds are back in no time. Save the vinegar for your chips.
Love your channel. For weeds in garden beds, do you recommend vinegar or the more heavy duty Tenacity? Thanks!
Tenacity cant be beat for weed control in the lawn, but for beds if plants are tight it can be risky. Vinegar is a great option for beds since it is lower strength, you can also use a plastic or cardboard shield when spraying to ensure nothing gets on the other plants
@@SilverCymbal Thanks my man!
I use vinegar dish soap and salt. It works fast. Don't spray on anything you don't want to die.
Yes this works using to much in your beds adds salt to the soil which could damage your plants. As video says a little goes a long way
Please do a little research on what using vinegar actually does to the soil over time. While it temporarily kills the plant when you keep applying vinegar to the same spot you’re killing everything in the soil.
Thats exactly what Im trying to do
Is acid better for killing soil or bleach?
On 29 seconds of the video,it is called 'Amrul' in local language in some parts of India. It is edible and good for health. We make 'chutney soup' of this.......this is expensive too in market .....so next time do a lil research and try this 'Amrul' weed 👍
I sprinkle on iodized salt. 60 bucks does a whole summer season to keep them off of my gravel driveway.
What effect does this have on the soil?
Fantastic, thanks so much! Do you think this would work for blackberries?
Thank you. Blackberries are tough plants, it definitely will hurt them but how much you wont really know until trying.
@@SilverCymbal thanks heaps, I suppose it's worth a try!
Vinegar=acetic acid=> still a chemical
Everything = made of atoms = still chemicals
Thx for the tip. If I spray that on the weeds in my garden and then I cover it with good soil and then I plant my seedlings on top of everything, is that going to kill them?
When spraying more than 50% is being wasted (with this small bottle sprayer).
The nozzle needs to be more concentrated, focused, highly directional.
Maybe a different applicator would work to reduce the waste.
does the vinegar affect the soil health, can you use in the garden to spot spray or is it only suitable for paths etc? appreciate any input.
Really enjoy your channel very informative thanks for posting.
Great video - thanks!! Would you have any suggestions for spider mites on pepper plants? I really need some help with that. I've tried soap and water - my plants dropped a ton of leaves... don't know what else to use?
Thank you, I haven't had spider mites before, hopefully someone else will chime in with some tips for those.
Are you growing you peppers indoor or outdoor? I use Diatomaceous earth, works great.
I use neat cheap vinegar with a tablespoon of citric acid, bombastic!
Could you share your mix % ?
