I'm a Chilean away from many (45) years. I was friend of her son, Angel Parra, recently deceased. So, this video makes me cry. Also from Violeta, try "Volver a los 17", and feel what a passionate woman feelings. The instrument in this vídeo is a "Charango", instrument that have a resonance box made with an armadillo body. More one time, my apologies for my poor English
She is the composer of the song. The instrument she is playing is probably a charango, which is a traditional instrument from the South American Andean region
Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me two stars, which when I open them, Perfectly distinguish black from white And in the tall sky its starry backdrop, And within the multitudes the one that I love.
Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me hearing that, in all of its reach Records night and day crickets and canaries, Hammers and turbines, bricks and storms, And the tender voice of my beloved.

She wrote "Gracias a la vida" to say goodbye to life. She committed suicide after that. That is the reason why she is singing so sadly and with pain. She is the only one that can sing this song, with its real meaning. There are plenty of versions of this song, but Violeta is the only one that can interpret it with its real meaning.

Violeta, what an amazing woman, what a legend, she was a revolutionary in so many aspects...You should listen to "Gavilan" by Violeta, such an amazing song, very very difficult to perform
Violeta, is considered the mother of the New Song movement, that broke from the traditional music that used culture as an export product. Violeta was a writer, a poet a painter, a play writer, a knitter, a cook and a singer and many other things. She also was a music anthropologist and in her early years she collected the traditional music from the countryside and collected works from the indigenous peoples from Rapa Nui, the Andes, the Mapuche .Also traveled extensively studying diverse instruments and incorporating into her creativity what she learned. She introduced charango, zamponas and other andean instruments to urban music. She studied at the Teachers Collegue, she was disliked and despise by the upper ruling class, she become a legend as a protest singer in the 60s and 70s. Long time before Dylan and other.
