Just found this video while searching for solar panels for campers. Great explanation video, I did wonder how you deal with the cable through the roof and water drips etc. I am a regular subscriber in 2024. Kev looks exactly the same, Jason has had a haircut 😀
The real test here is when you run into the van and look where the drill came through.... that's a make or break moment! For me that would take at least 2 cups of tea and 20 (re)measurements before drilling. Great video, very informative and well made.
This was a brilliant demonstration of solar installation. I have always been wary, though curious at the same time, about fitting solar charging systems. Thank you so much, brilliant video 🙏
Never done any major electrics nor anything like this. Excellent video which worked a treat for me. Just fitted a 120w solar panel to my Bailey Approach. Took me two days in total but I knew exactly what to do after watching this video. All working well. Thanks mate!
Great informative video that will have helped a lot of people. Just one observation, the first connection should be from the battery terminal to the charge controller, after that it is safe to connect the solar panel to the charge controller. Connecting the solar panel to the charge controller before the battery can damage the controller.
Hi Jason, I watch all your vids but this is my first comment!! That was the most clear video of fitting a solar system I have seen!! You have given me the confidence to do it myself now!!great vid, keep up the good work!!👍
No need to buy and install a new solar control unit. That Autotrail model (like mine) and other Autotrails, has a solar charge controller already installed inside the main control unit. You simply connect the pos & neg wires from the solar panel to this unit. Also you don't have to take pos & neg wires to the leisure and vehicle batteries, the van's main unit supplies the solar charge to both batteries, depending which battery has the lowest charge.
Good, clear guide. Seen some stupidly over-complicated instructions from 'experts'.....splicing wires, bypassing relays....allsorts of rubbish. then saying that it may invalidate the warranty on your £60k motorhome!
Great video, would have been useful to see you actually connecting to the batteries, fitting the fuses and why you had white cable and black cables? Just for us complete novices! Thanks
Cheers Jason, you must have read my mind , as might be getting a van this weekend, and will be looking to install Solar Panel, as it currently doesnt have one. Cheers Stu

cheers Jason already have solar just wanted check for connecting vehicle battery as this isn't wired up excellent video fully informative Don't know why LEE runs you down Ha Ha
OK, a few issues here. The cables going to the solar controller need securing, they could easily be pulled out as they are. Secondly there is exposed cable core at the connections, the cable should be stripped to just the right length to prevent this. Apart from that, not too bad! Oh and thicker cable to reduce voltage drop.
Thank you Andrew point taken but we only try to cover the basic's for people and not to get to involved as the video will go on for ever and the aim is to give a basic understanding for people.
Hope you don't mind me asking 4 questions: 1) Bearing in mind that, from what I can see, if the TV aerial is moved, it could shade the panel and cause it to stop working efficiently, is that really the best place to put it? 2) Why have you put ducting on the inside of the van? Does that look good? 3) Why have you run the cable the whole length of the van when you could have droppped it in by the panel? That would have looked a lot better and reduced voltage drop. 4) Why have you used a PWM regulator and not an MPPT model? Purely because of the cost difference? Serious questions and serious answers would be appreciated.
Hi Andy the solar is effective with out sun light and yes you can argue the case.We put trunking inside to hide the wires. If we dropped in by the panel we would of have to run the wires all through the motorhome anyway. We used the particular controller because that is what Kevin wanted and he did not want anything fancy.

Hi Jason - in regards to 2007 and 2008 Autotrail Cheyenne 630 models - do they come with a spare wheel? Went to look at another one and it had no spare
Charging your leisure battery is totally acceptable, however unless you have a double battery output on the controller you really have to watch what you are doing. Double outputs on a controller are completely separate and that is why you can connect the 2nd battery output to the vehicle battery. But if you don't have a double battery output on the controller do NOT feed a second cable from the same battery output on the controller as you send to your leisure battery, in other words you are basically allowing interference between your 2 batteries, and both are different types of batteries and charge differently. Please check this if you want to charge your vehicle battery from your solar panel, YOU MUST HAVE TWO SEPARATE BATTERY OUTPUTS ON THE CONTROLLER TO DO THIS.
Jason, its easy to drill a hole into plastic shells vans rather than the problems when drilling into metal. but, does the adhesive still apply to metal as well? i see a few people who make sure their solar is bolted not glued onto roof.
