- Decided to get out and hike the Is That All Ya Got Loop in Linville Gorge, a hike I previously completed about three years ago. This loop comes in at roughly 21 miles. We had great weather, saw some fighter jets, made some new friends and even ate pizza(ish) on the trail.
Trails Used (clockwise): Table Rock Gap Trail | MST | Olsen | MST | Leadmine | LGT | Spence Ridge
Points of Interest:
Loop Start 2:40
Fighter Jets 3:58
Chimneys 4:29
Shortoff 7:15
Water Tree 7:55
Camp Night 1 8:02
Southern River Crossing 13:20
Leadmine Reroute 15:57
Pizza at Daffodil Flats 17:45
Camp Night 2 19:35
Northern River Crossing 28:17
Great job! Glad Leadmine trail is getting better. Bye bye goat trail.
Yeah no kidding, my buddy and I took the new leadmine trail and it is so much easier than the old one. Good riddance old leadmine!
Same here! It’s still a punchy trail but not having that steep drop down to the river is nice!
I can’t believe you found that AirPod. It looks like someone would have picked it up before you found it. Left over pizza is always good. Lol.
I know!! And it still works 😂. Now I have two sets of AirPods...
So many memories from those trails. Those views never get old. Looks like y’all had perfect weather too!
100% certain I was halfway down pinch-in at the rock with the crazy view of shortoff when those jets flew through. Great video!
Such an incredible sight! We got lucky with our vantage point
Another great Gorge video. Well done.
Thank you! We had a great time
Great video. I'll be doing this loop in 10 days and I can't wait!
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
I would cross the river with an 8 ft pole so ya can lean some weight on it. More stable than 2 short poles.
Every body makes a vid of ITAYG. Got plenty of them. Yours is better than most.
But you do us all a greater service to revisit the Northern Loop. You did us all a favor by making a vid of it but you did it in miserable weather. Your vid was remarkable for its honesty and I reviewed it very favorably on FB group Linville Gorge Badasses . Look how few have done the Northern Loop..we will all loose it if we dont hike it. Hope you will give it another shot with much better weather.
How bout introducing your Buddy?. If hes not shy, a face shot or two would be nice. Both of you guys look like you have been working out.
GREAT job of filming Olsen..did you mention it by name? That trail let's people know what LiNville Gorge is all about !! !!
As usual, the side loop into the NC Wall Area is bypassed on a ITAYG video. Oh, that's right ! Its closed to protect the Peregrine falcon. Too bad. Maybe just as well..somebody would eventually step on the Hudsonia.
At the Chimney Gap, it would have been nice to show your viewers where the trail to the spring is. Many miss it.
Have you done:
Henson Creek?
Fantasy Creek
LOST?
revisited Ledge?
Please tell your viewers that the Avenza maps of Linville Gorge are the only maps worth having.
Thanks for another good video.
Great video! You were just a few hours behind us. We did the loop but started off about 9am Friday morning and wrapped up around 11 Sunday. Even got my vehicle in your intro at Spence Ridge. Glad you guys got to see the jets, we heard them but couldn't make it to the edge fast enough!
Hope you guys had as much fun as we did! Did y’all get wet at the Spence crossing or find a way to rock hop?
@@johnnytwotarps2191 we swam across. The water was just a bit too high. It felt good to rinse off the previous 2 days though!
Pretty sweet when the jets fly through the gorge like that, and loud.. Good job getting your camera out in time lol.. Another well done video I can’t get enough of this area 😁 Stay safe out there!
I’m the same way, can never get enough! We were pretty pumped about the jets - I’ve seen them once before but when I was down on the LGT through the trees
Love the views. Got this one on my list to do but gotta get in shape for it. Too much time off these past 4-5 months.
Hope you get the chance to do it soon, it’s a fun loop! Probably my favorite hike in the Gorge. I’d like to take it even slower and do it in three nights sometime
Very curious about some of your gear, specifically your pack, hammock set up (fly, quilt, war bonnet, underquilt, snake skin selections), and camp chair!
I need to do a what’s in my pack video…my pack is the ULA Ohm 2.0. I use the warbonnet blackbird xlc hammock with the warbonnet mini fly tarp. My quilts vary but in this video it’s the WB Wooki UQ and the Bandit UGQ TQ. Camp chair is just the REI flexlight
Well done, ya'll made that thing look easy....did the knees miss the trekking poles?
Actually I didn’t mind not having them as much as I thought I would - it made it easier to get the camera out and snack and drink water on the go
Great video as always. I had heard somewhere not to drink the water from the river. Do you know if that's true and why?
Some people are worried about drinking the river water but I never have been. If i can avoid it I will but I've drank the river water filtered several times. That being said I think the advice to not drink the river water is good. River water generally can contain a lot of bacteria and other organisms that might make you sick, you also have to take into account where the river flows through up stream..i.e. urban areas, under highways, through cow pasture etc.. which means there may be other contaminants
Hey man - had a great time with you and David. What's a good way to keep in touch with you guys? Hope all is well!
Hey man sorry I missed this comment somehow! Hit me up on Instagram @prelohded
5:00 are there any places to camp at the top?
There are several sites in and around the chimneys. They get taken pretty quickly on weekends, especially in nice weather because of the close proximity to Table Rock parking. The best hammock spots are close to the parking lot, but there are several sites suitable for a tent beyond that, and you could probably make a hammock work in some of those spots with some creativity
Would you recommend clockwise or counterclockwise? I feel like it would be fun to end with all the great views but I’m not sure if counterclockwise is a good idea.
What kind of critter was combing the edge of the river? Otter?
Yeah it was a river otter. I’ve only seen them in the Gorge one other time. This one was by himself, last time it was a group of 5 or 6
Any tips for someone doing this trip for the first time?
My biggest piece of advice would be give yourself plenty of time to complete the loop and still enjoy it. Gorge miles are tough in most sections and it often surprises people how long it takes to hike a mile compared to other trails like the AT. Also keep an eye on the river levels, once it gets up well over 200 CFS it gets much more difficult to cross in the northern end. For reference it was at about 180 when we crossed both days. You can check the river levels here: waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?02138500
@@johnnytwotarps2191 thanks I really appreciate the tips!
