  • Recently, students from ‪@UMTVLive‬ interviewed us at a local park in Coral Gables to discuss the invasive green iguanas in South Florida and the detrimental impact they are causing. It is well known that these reptiles have been wreaking havoc throughout Miami-Dade County since the 1960s. When these reptiles grew too big, many pet owners released them into the wild. Since then, they have multiplied by the thousands, negatively affecting our ecosystem and native species, posing a major concern if left unchecked.
In our interview, we explained that iguanas are mainly herbivores but have been known to occasionally prey on bird eggs, affecting the native wildlife of South Florida. They are also known to enter burrows of other native species, such as the burrowing owl and gopher tortoises, to lay their own eggs. Iguanas may lay 20-70 eggs, and with very few predators, they can multiply rapidly, especially in urban areas. Some predators of iguanas include hawks, snakes, and alligators.
It was a pleasure to join the students from the University of Miami, Their award-winning channel shows their dedication to a bright broadcasting future. By spreading awareness of the very important issues associated with iguanas in South Florida, we can make a difference.
