It's pretty incredible how few options exist for a simple clock that will both set itself via the WWVB digital signal AND allow you to pick a UTC/GMT time zone adjustment. Upsetting, really. This topic that you cover in this video really is worth a lot of discussion. Well done.
I just wanted to say I (and others) really appreciate this video and your effort! Clocks are an important tool in the shed, and a modern take/perspective was really needed.
Thanks for taking the "time" to share your shack Randy. What a great collection! I built 1 of the Nixie tube clock kits from PV Electronics based in the UK. It's also linked to a GPS receiver and very accurate. PVE have quite a variety of kits. They're kits are very well made and provide some of the best kit building instructions I've used ... might be something to add to your all ready awesome collection! Thanks again!!!
Any time the initials don't line up with the order of the words, you can bet the French had a hand in it. It's why the International System (of units) is called The SI.
About the UTC acronym... From Wikipedia :) The official abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time is UTC. This abbreviation comes as a result of the International Telecommunication Union and the International Astronomical Union wanting to use the same abbreviation in all languages. English speakers originally proposed CUT (for "coordinated universal time"), while French speakers proposed TUC (for "temps universel coordonné"). The compromise that emerged was UTC,[7] which conforms to the pattern for the abbreviations of the variants of Universal Time (UT0, UT1, UT2, UT1R, etc.).[8]
Great video ! Thank you ! Do you use or have any Rubidium oscillators/ frequency references ? Those would be neat to interface with a digital LED display and watch how it and WWV would deviate over the months and years if it had a battery back-up. Norm
According to convention, the initialism "UTC" was adopted as a compromise between the English "coordinated universal time" and the French "temps universel coordonné."
Great video! I love the ending. If I could put it together I would like to enact a scene where a WWV employee is sitting at their desk in the radio studio and listening to the tick...tock...tick and every minute giving the time in UTC (I know this is a recording) and as time goes by the employee starts to grow weary and messes up the hour and the minute and soon after starts to have a mental break down and goes crazy from all the ticking and tocking and runs out the building to the mountains and becomes a hermit.
I have my Asus router acting as an NTP server for my network referencing local stratum 1 atomic clocks. Over the past 30 days it has pulled the offset in to .002ms and drift is settling in below 3usec. It makes a difference in how each client device reacts, and how the network “feels” - by not having to correct timing errors between devices, data can flow much closer to the speeds the different interfaces were designed for
@@K7AGE I should do a video with all of the phones and tablets in the house in sync, changing time together, with a radio time signal in the background for audio...

UTC Universal Time Co-ordinate. The usage is what got mixed up, not the designation at time of invention. Plus, it was sort of a Euro thing and subjected to translation, and you know how strange that becomes.
UTC is a specific time standard and is itself (the coordinated part) a composite of other specific time standards & observations. It is very closely in sync with UT1 which uses earth's rotational position in relation to distant quasars and such objects as a reference, almost the same as mean solar time (yet another standard). UTC ticks in SI unit seconds in sync with International Atomic Time but with leap seconds added or subtracted to keep it within 1 second of variation. There are several of these time standards. "What time is it?" or "how long is 1 second?" are rather complicated questions. Terms such as GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, although once a standard, today more describes a time zone. GMT & "zulu" aren't really synonyms for UTC. The NIST atomic clock is accurate to 1 second in 100 million years. That means only the duration of a second has such precision. It doesn't answer the question of what time it is.
Because the orbital inclination of the GPS satellites is 55 degrees and Oregon is 46 north there will be rarely be one due north of Oregon. It should happen, though.

My WWVB clocks don’t get locked very often. Sometimes I need to move them to a window.

WWV and WWVB are in CO, WWVH is in HI.
