Malta has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 36 times since its debut in 1971. The contest is broadcast in Malta on the PBS channel, TVM. Malta has yet to win the contest, but is the only non-winning country to have achieved four top three results.
Malta finished last on its first two attempts in 1971 and 1972, and had a 16-year absence from the contest between 1975 and 1991, when it returned. Malta has participated every year since. Malta's return proved more successful, reaching the top 10 in 12 out of 15 contests from 1991 to 2005, including third-place results for Mary Spiteri (1992) and Chiara (1998) and second-place results for Ira Losco (2002) and Chiara (2005). Since finishing last for the third time in 2006, Malta has struggled to make an impact, having achieved only two top 10 results in recent years: first being Gianluca Bezzina's eighth-place in 2013, and Destiny Chukunyere's seventh-place finish in 2021.

They participated in the semis in 2004 and qualified, then again in 2009 with full tele system. they also qualified with the televote in 2013, 2016 and 2019 in the split system and then in 2021 2nd in tele and won the semi. Televote doesn't outright hate Malta, but because they aren't a traditional "televote favourite" like say Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, Moldova or Italy and the juries favor Sweden WAY more than they favor Malta, they end up NQing many times due to the big lack of tele support and the juries not being able to push malta through by themselves. Like I said above, last year Malta's song was trash, Sarah Bonnici was robbed and it also didn't help her she was in the same semi with Israel and The Netherlands(both of whom got more points than Baby Lasagna did in semi 1) + in 2022 Malta was an NQ even for the juries! So the televote doesn't outright hate Malta, but they prefer other countries over them due to Malta being more of a jury favourite and focusing their entries on getting points from the juries
The same argument can be given for Poland vs the Juries, where Poland is hated by the Juries except for 2022 and with Australia, who the televote also doesn't vote except for 2016 on both semi and final and in 2019 and 2023 somehow in semi yes but then barely any votes in the final

Malta was really successful in the 90s, they really benefited from the language rule
English is one of Malta’s official languages. Sucks that Maltese was unpopular for Eurovision, back in the 70’s. I’d love to see them bring a Maltese entry next year!

She sounded pretty breathy in this clip, maybe the audio for this video brought the quality down but I can see how she wouldn't make it too far without perfect voice control

2023 and 2024 are underrated, definitly no last place performances

I must say Malta is pretty good at Eurovision it was 2 times 3rd and 2 times 2nd and they got other pretty good places I love Malta not only in Eurovision but the country itself is so pretty much love from🇷🇴💋
Malta's last 3 years are just tragic (at least in terms of results) Loop DID NOT deserve last place in SF2, I know the song wasn't very original but it definitely deserved some praise for the performance

I don't get why juries were removed from semis tbh, since there are songs the juries NQ that definitely shouldn't go through(Cyprus 2022 for example, televote only would be a Q with HORRENDOUS vocals). I hate the juries and definitely want their power to weaken(especially because televote has a pay wall), but full removal is too risky a move to take

they should have never been removed who ever thought its a great idea to remove juries in the semi final clearly has no respect for San Marino Malta and any other countries that suffer from televoting in my opinion they should withdraw until they change it back to jury voting again in the semi final

Side note: I did some investigation and found out that the ONLY time where the malta didn't get a higher jury placement than televote was in the 2013 final, where they finished 9th with both. That's completely insane. Had the juries got to decide Malta would've qualified every year from 2009-2021 and had only televote existed in semis back then they only would've qualified 4 times, in 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2021

My opinions about the country in eurovision: See people? This is the CONCRETE PROOF that we need the juries in the semi-final!! the juries would definitely have treated Sarah better, I agree with people who say that the juries shouldn't have so much power in the semi-finals, 20% or 25% of juries in the semi-final would be the perfect way in my opinion, but there was no need to have definitely removed them, because they really save good songs sometimes that televote forgets, If people say that juries only vote politically, then televoters only vote for neighbors, why is there no reason for Malta not to have qualified this year being a country without neighbors, and i feel very bad for Sarah she was amazing, and please, let's stop this hate on girls who dance at Eurovision, especially because Chanel wasn't the first to dance and every dance can have similar movements, so i really hope the juries votes in the semi-final returns or the public start to like Malta more, because is really a country that i really like in the contest

Oh dear. I do feel bad for Sarah finishing last in her semi final heat. Sadly, no Jury voting in the semis was a huge disadvantage for Malta like in 2023.
Undoubtedly the most hard done by country at Eurovision, I still believe it is Destiny’s, Destiny to win Eurovision for Malta. Hope Malta knows it’s just small country syndrome and not a reflection on the actual entries. 2024 was by far the best live performance.

Taboo is the only Maltese entry I really like, also Walk on Water and Chameleon were good, 2023 staging was cool. They should try something more edgy or some ethnic Banger like Regina by Aidan or Bewsa by Dominic Cini.

The audience has no taste in music at all (Finalnd 2023 1st place in GF?, Netherlands 2024 2nd place in SF?, Estonia 2023 and Serbia 2024 10th place in SF?, Finland 2024 Q?, Albania, Czech Republic, Denmark 2024 NQ?)
They just need to something good that isn’t a meh song. They were televote qualifiers in 2016, 2019, 2021 ect. The busker was very repetitive and Sarah had a good live but the song is just done 100x before and much better by others

Honestly, Malta is trying too hard. They would've had more chances if they cared less about appealing to everyone and more about finding an audience.

It was my runner-up once, in 2013.
It was my last place twice, in 1971 and 1972.
So, they started with 2 last places and ended on the same note. (Out of those 4 times, only their last place finish in 1972 was actually deserved)

To this day I still don't like the idea of televote only vote in the Semi Final it's a joke it is not fair on Malta and San Marino but however some Malta entry very meh if in 2025 they won't qualify I could see them withdraw
San Marino owes all three of its qualifications to tele(9th in tele in 2014, 4th in 2019, and 2021 ok jury and tele both passed san marino)
Jury has done san marino much dirtier than tele has(though megara should have qualified and no juries wouldn't save it)

Unfortunately, Malta often has brilliant performers but the wrong choice of song. They rarely manage to get the song choice right unless its chosen internally (2019, 2021).

Malta have sent some great songs over the years and some really memorable performers, although the recent efforts have been quite lacklustre. I do think that Destiny can win Eurovision one day. She’s the full package - just waiting for the right song to come around
