❤3rd gen 4runner here. Quality small lift. Quality AT tires. We'll maintained. Budget build of the interior to live in while traveling. Money for epic off-road adventures. Every thousand saved is another month on the road for me. No worries about taking it nearly anywhere and making it back. Priceless!
Absolutely agree with you guys, I have an 80 series Land Cruiser with the 1HDT 4.2 in line 6 Diesel, so I will never change it for a new fancy Toyota

I've had a 2007 FJ Cruiser with just under 30k miles, manual trans. It was fun, but when I wanted to go camping the cargo space and the second row seats would fill up fast. The best Toyota I've had was a 2005 Toyota Sequoa and I seriously regret selling it. It rides like a luxury SUV, has off-road capability, and having the third row seats removed gives plenty of space for camping or gear.
Man you're touching on something I really want to dive deeper on now, because what you said is 100% true. I love the manual so much, especially off-road, but there are a few tradeoffs in the space department that can't be ignored.
The Sequoia definitely does not get enough credit for what it is! Did you replace it for a different off-roader that couldn't meet the capabilities of the Sequoia?

The Sequoia with the 4.7 is underrated for sure.
Love my tree (sequoia). Originally got it because I actually needed to seat my family of 7 on road trips and still have some cargo space. ButC now that I’m spoiled on all the cargo space for solo trips, it’s hard to convince myself to downsize. I can throw a pile of storage containers and a queen air mattress in the back, and never have to worry about how I’m gonna cram everything back there.
As my family grows, the Sequoia just keeps looking better and better. It is SO hard to imagine letting go of the manual transmission in the FJ, but that space and functionality is undeniable 😍
Early 2000's was the best generation for a lot of vehicles. For me, it marked the last generation where a truly electronic-free driving experience was available. I always admired the FJ's in particular because of the fully-manual transmission and transfer case combo. This setup was also available on the first gen Nissan Xterras. I will forgo any conceivable performance advantage made possible by electronics in exchange for the sheer reliability of the old, 100% mechanical drivetrains.

My grandfather bought a 1980 Toyota pickup, 4wd, long bed ($10k). It's unrestored, all manual and now it's mine. 4 speed, open diff's, but it's still dead reliable and will wheel with any new stock production truck.

You guys helped me finding my future car for travelling and off camping. I just put my Suv on sale today, and i was so undecided what car should i get next for my long term adventure. I was thinking on a Hilux, but wasn't very satisfied with the choice, but now i know, the 4runner will be the choice to suit my needs. Thanks for helping !

In some ways you can have more fun, because the drivetrains are really robust and reliable, so you don't have to spend much money maintaining them and can instead spend your hard-earned money customizing them however you want!

All my buds have the latest gadgets for off roading. Me? A nearly stock FJ and I can go every where they go with no more problems than they have with all the gizmos.
Exactly!!! We forget how capable these things are right out of the box. It feels like these trucks are being dragged up market constantly by the latest doohickeys, and for off roading, we're kinda missing the forest for the trees here..

Yes, same boat!! We've been less and less impressed with newer vehicles as they come out. It's like they trade the character of these cars in for more horsepower and a bunch of features that just numb the whole experience..
Also, congrats on your fantastic taste! A 6 speed Laguna Seca M3?! What a dream! Was it a good ownership experience?

What winch were you using? And why did it stop working?
It's the Ironman 4x4 9500lb synthetic line winch. We think there was some sort of short in the control box maybe? Definitely wasn't a mechanical failure, I'm imagining there was one bad ground or wire. The same winch has been on the FJ for years, and still works flawlessly btw!
J pulled his off to try and find the issue, but never reinstalled it because there are 3 other winches available in the group we normally off-road with. Honestly he just never used it, so hasn't bothered to put it back on the truck.
We're actually going to talk about this quite a bit more in our next video!
I have a 2012 Nissan frontier pro 4x and it doesn't have any luxury perks but thats the way i like it nothing to break its got a rear locker and i put a Bilstein 5100 kit on it and some new uca's and it hasn't failed me yet.
Yesssss! Nissans from this era are SO underrated. Not as many creature comforts, but they absolutely nailed the fundamentals. And that 4.0 VQ engine is so rowdy! Rev happy, and adds so much fun and character to the truck.
I had an 07 Xterra Off-Road before the FJ. 6 speed manual with the rear locker, it was an absolute unit. Started every time and gave me zero problems. Took it to 250k miles before I found the deal on the Toyota. Man I still miss that thing.
What’s wild is people pay for the TRd pro package and rip everything off, then me with my 4th gen buy the parts for Pennie’s on the dollar and it fits lol

I did the same thinking when buying my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Mpg seemed essentially the same and it does everything I could want or need, just added a head unit. $6000 when I bought it in 2021, as much as some upgrade packages on new models.
Yes exactly this!! The fact you can get so much capability and reliability for the price of an upgrade package on a new one.. the math just doesn't math
I'm a little biased towards my 03 Taco and 97 Landcruiser but the 2005-2015 stuff is probably the pinnacle of Toyota engineering
I love the styling and dimensions of the 03 Taco so much! The 80 series is definitely a legend, and even IT is packing tech they can't seem to find or remember for the new ones

@Automobros Sadly I don't think they could put front lockers on the new trucks. People are snapping axles with traction control alone on stock tires. From what I gather, the solution from Toyota is to detune the engine 🤦♂️ What happened to overbuilding everything? Seems like everything is built to a minimum standard now.
@Shakshuka69 Could not agree with that sentiment more. Toyotas kinda stop feeling like Toyotas when you feel like you need to be careful with it or it's going to break (especially in a stock configuration!) It feels like they're just coasting and cashing in on the reputation they built on these older trucks now...

2008 Trail Teams FJ with manual. Went through two throw out bearings. Had to drop tranny both times at a cost of $4,000 each time, under warranty. Punted at 61,000 miles as I didn’t want to pay out of pocket for a third.
Holy cow! Those are brutal repair bills, I wouldn't want to hold onto it either... It would be like holding a live grenade once the warranty expired 😱 what do you drive now?

The thing no one realizes is that quality in Toyota suvs is mostly dependent on where it’s made. Both of those trucks are made in the Tahara plant in Japan, same as Landcruiser and Lexus suvs. The American made models such as Tacoma and Tundra are made well but not to the same level. Look at what it takes to be able to work in the Tahara plant, I believe it’s twenty years of experience in the same automotive assembly job with Toyota. That’s the Difference. I have owned five 4Runners, every generation but the first and all have been solid. My current 2017 is completely built for off road and overland camping. It has been great. I hope this helps shed some light on the subject. Also just an fyi, the fj isn’t all wheel drive. The fj is the same drive train as the 4Runner, not the limited 4runner
Very true, that's an excellent point that deserves to be noted! The trucks built in Japan really are on a different level quality wise. There's absolutely some extra peace of mind coming out of that plant. After having owned so many 4Runners, do you have a favorite generation? And do you think you'll get a 6th gen?
Also, yes you're correct about the FJ drivetrain if it is an automatic! The manual version has full time 4wd

I’m rocking my v8 4.7l 02’ Tundra SR5 4wd w/ Limited slip rear w/ 2.75” lift on OME 2886s. Wheels 16” MB Wheels w/ 285-75 r16 . My truck mobs quite nicely. Plus I own the truck out rt, title in safe

I currently have the 4th gen 4runner and previously owned an FJ Cruiser, both are great trucks. I wish Toyota would have offered the 4.7 V8 in the FJ... that would have been a sweet combo. Also, a larger factory gas tank.
Man it would've been a world eater with the V8! And absolutely agree on the gas tank. It's a bit of a bummer being able to watch the fuel needle drop in real time lol
The 4th gen didn't get a lot of credit for what it was back in the day, but they kinda ended up in the sweet spot of its lineage!

Don't know how I ran up on this channel but I'm glad I did I love this generation off toyota trucks I have a 2005 4runner 4.0 4wd transmission went out at 396767 miles lol and I'm putting a new transmission in it as we speak lol it's some vehicles that u get ride off with high mileage but theses generation of toyota u dont it's worth fixing lol love my 4runner.

@@Automobros I bought what was the first FJ sold at that dealership in 2007, but after it was leased for 3 years. I payed 23,500 Canadian, and some are still selling at that price today.
I added metal tech winch bumper and sliders, expedition one rear bumper, bud built skids, and icon stage 6 lift.

Spot on. I was late to the Toyota party. I have a 22 5th gen 4 runner. Plan to keep it forever. I hate the direction toyota is going with all these technological advances . I realize regulations need to be met but they should of kept a dinosaur around . Whether it was a Land cruiser,4runner, tundra, fj, tacoma, hilux. There should be a version that is barebones, naturally aspirated, and just overall reliable . These new iterations won’t out last their predecessors.
That's something I'm noticing, people with the older Gen vehicles talk about them like family heirlooms! We all just have so much confidence in that bare bones reliability. Obviously it remains to be seen if the new ones can carry that torch, but they already seem so much more complicated, so much more finicky. It feels like we're entering the "disposable generation" of vehicles.
And you touched on something we didn't in the video that's important to note: regulations are no doubt driving a lot of these choices! When you see Toyota still offering the 70 series Land Cruiser overseas, or that cool $10k truck that just came out, it feels like they are fighting with one hand tied behind their back in the US. But it's hard to feel bad for them when they in turn price gouge the bejeezus out of their customer base with a bunch of tech we could honestly do without.
@@Automobros Totally agree . Prices basically doubled in 25 years …..mrsp: on a 2000 3rd gen 4 runner was 25k. Probably could get one out the door around 20k back then . 70 series LC is amazing . They would sell them like hot cakes in America even at 100K+. However we aren’t getting that in this lifetime. Toyota will figure out the reliability aspect with all these new truck models but I would proceed with caution for the next 3 years . Gx550 is my favorite out of the new trucks as far as looks. I have no desire to ever buy one though .

And the new GX is such a beautiful vehicle, when it was announced I was astonished by how good a job they did on the design. But I'm on the same page, I'm not interested in actually owning one

Quality-wise, they have been rock solid and we'd 100% recommend them! Mine have taken a beating on the trails and Ive had no issues whatsoever. Just has me looking at the beadlocks or beauty rings that RRW also sells!

Also the new Toyota lines and their progression in the evolution of Toyota looks cool and sounds cool but I think they are moving out from behind the eight ball .. I wouldn't trade my first gen Sequoia for a brand new Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter. My first gen Sequoia is way more capable than anything they are producing today. That's why I spent 60k on a extreme off-road long travel Beast build on 20 year old Toyota instead of buying a new one ..😬🤪

I have a 2008 tacoma 5speed 4cyl 4x4 I also paid 15000 for it and my wife drives a 2007 fj cruiser they are definitely awsome reliable trucks the new Toyotas have lost my interest they have too much tech and not enough bare bones 4x4 needs reliability expeshally if your out out in the woods the last thing you need is the latest tech and whistles and bells that’s just more to fail
