Mr Dawson was based on Charles Lightroller, who was an officer on the Titanic. He commanded the deploy of the lifeboats, and went down with the ship. But, survived when he was sucked into a steam vent, and blown to the surface by hot air
As an ex serviceman thank you for doing this reaction, Madison. We own so much to the previous generations who fought in the two World Wars, hopefully there will never be another, we need to remember the cost of warfare and heed history.
We need to remember that the earlier we stop an country invading a one nation, instead of waiting until they have taken 3/4 nations, will cost less lives. "peace in our time" is not worth it when a few years on we face a far bigger problem. It appears USA has not heeded history. Rather those who signed up for war than the need for conscription
Imagine the Dunkirk beach scenes with 20 times the waiting soldiers, and 10 times the attacking Luftwaffe (German Airforce). Now throw in hundreds of abandoned cars, trucks, and military hardware strewn throughout the perimeter, for that was the reality of the Dunkirk debacle. Christopher Nolan elected not to use CGI in this film, but in doing so, he greatly compromised its historical value.
I saw this movie in IMAX 70mm with my dad and we enjoyed it. A teenage girl, who was one row above me, covered her ears because of the loud sounds of the gunshots, during the yacht scene.
Sorry it took me so long to watch your reaction. Very heartfelt and sincere, which is what we all need to 'feel' what was going on back then. My I recommend a very tragic and not well known movie please - 'Joyeux Noel' (2005), about the Christmas truce during WWI. Something that could stopped the war dead in its tracks.
Definitely among the finest in the Christopher Nolan collection of films. A study of courage during some very perilous times. They used the actual location of the evacuation. The street scenes were shot nearby because the buildings in the area were destroyed during the war. Great job as always, Madison. Hope this stays up and you will do Oppenheimer as the next Christopher Nolan film you react to when you return to him.
Imo a better depiction of Dunkirk would be the 1958 version of Dunkirk (it’s has a smaller scale but definitely a bit more of an accurate portrayal) highly recommend.
Great, insightful analysis and reaction. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend Darkest Hour. The story takes place in May 1940, from Winston Churchill’s perspective. Churchill is brilliantly played by Gary Oldman, who also won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance…😊👍🏼
As usual, an excellent reaction, Madison, but there are no sharks in the English Channel. And, Christoher Nolan often messes around with time in his movies. You should check out what is arguably his best film (that definitely does this with time), _Memento._ It's guaranteed to screw with your head.
@RosaLichtenstein01 Mate there have been sharks in the Channel for millions of years. You're kinda correct about The Prestige/Momento just not in the way you think. Momento is totally The Championship whereas The Prestige is absolutely The Premier League 🤔😊
@@eddhardy1054 "Mate there have been sharks in the Channel for millions of years." And your proof there were any in the channel in the 1940s is what? I couldn't see any. Did you use invisible pixels by any chance? Can't agree over your ranking of those two films, but unlike sharks in the channel, that is just a matter of opinion.
@@RosaLichtenstein01 Honeybun do you have proof then that all the sharks (but not other species of fish obviously) upped and left The Channel for the duration of the war and then came back when hostilities ceased?
Great reaction, Madison. I've seen other reactors who will alternate between blurring the video and muting the audio or just obscuring the video with either the name of the movie or the channel and they rarely seem to run into copyright claim problems. I won't speak for everyone but I'm not here to watch a movie, I'm here to see your reaction and get your take on it so the audio and/or video of the movie being censored doesn't really bother me.
Both my grandfathers were at Dunkerque. one was among the last british soldiers to reach the city and leave via the beaches and one served on the ships. This movie is absolute garbage and a disgraceful insult to the men who fought nazis in france in 1940 and put up a spectacular fight against them, beating them - man for man - almost every time the germans took them on, despite the horrible supply problems and the fact that the british and french forces involved had been cut off to the south. Those men deserved a much better movie and Nolan should have been ashamed of himself for making such a dull movie that didnt come anywhere near the truth of what really happened.
When is someone going to film a movie that includes the actual heroes of Dunkirk? I'm referring to the 51st Highland Division (which included men from the Black Watch Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, the Gordons Highlanders and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. These men fought, along with some English regiments, a rear-guard action that allowed all those men on the beach to escape. Yes, the flotilla of private boats saved the day, but the day would never have happened without the Churchill's sacrifice of the 51st Highland Division. Lest we forget.
This isn't true at all, the spitfire can glide but it's dependent on speed. But I forgive your ignorance,as your apparent lack of coherent English shows you are probably a very young child. 🤡🤡
The worst version of DUNKIRK ever. The BBC did a 3 part series that was at least based on facts. This version shows none of the real horror of those stukas that came by the dozen and dropped 500kg bombs. I dont know what fireworks they dropped in the film. Where was the beach full of waiting British soldiers. Over 200,000 in total. The Royal Navy were the real heroes who rescued the men but were shown very badly in this. Turning the French Army away, how come one third of those recued were French. The little boats must always be mentioned but when it comes to numbers rescued, it was a tiny fraction in comparison. Where were the brave French Navy in the film. Maybe they did not have time in the film after showing an RAF fantasy flight. The only aircraft shot down near Dunkirk belonged to the Royal Navy. The nearest aircraft shot down that belonged to the RAF was at Calais, where as the Royal Navy aircraft were dive bombing the approaching German armour closing in on the beaches. This movie should be called EVACUATION or something similar if it wants to follow Hollywood with its historic depictions.
" the little whirly thing on the front ..." - a propeller
As much as that annoyed me, i also found it comical haha
My Grandfather was part of the B.E.F. and was one of the soldiers to get off the beach at Dunkirk.

Same with Saving Private Ryan. Not a single ship in the background or on the horizon when Tom Hanks and co land on Omaha beach.
I streamed this movie TODAY, just so I could watch your reaction. This movie was epic!
No Surrender🇬🇧🏴
The next logical movie to watch after this, of course, is Darkest Hour, which puts Dunkirk in full context.
Recommend watching Battle of Britain next to get an idea of what came after

movie about alien attack during WWII
Praying that this isn't a repeat of the To Kill a Mockingbird battle.

should see Darkest Hour next. If you haven't seen it yet. Follows Churchill through the same period. Stars Gary Oldman in great performance
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but won for
Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing
Best Film Editing.

Actually there are sharks in the Channel, it's just that they're not very big... oh and The Prestige is Nolan's best film

An other well made war film is "Saving Private Ryan".

Dunkerque, Dunkirk, Dünkirchen. Different languages, different spelling / name 🙂
The channel between England and France is called The ENGLISH channel!!!! 😜
