  • 50 years ago this Brutalist concrete Anderston Centre was opened. Many attempts have been made to rejuvenate the Centre over the years but to no avail.
It all started way back in 1968 with a New vision of the future Development including Shops, Housing for many people and a Bus station which served South of Glasgow.
Over the years from 70's into the 80's the Centre was a haven for problems which led to most people never going thereafter. it lay abandoned for many years and today in the 21st century its future looks unknown.
The 3 high rise block have been renovated and are currently occupied.
The Travelator was demolished some years ago, as has the octagon top part. Most of the internals have been stripped out now and is unrecognisable from what it was.
This is part 2 and more thorough walkabouts of what was a futuristic vision gone wrong. Building is very tired and needs work done to secure its future, although don't see that happening any time soon. Glasgow is a 21st century city today and Anderston Centre is not fit for anyone now apart from residential flats above and few small businesses it's a ghost mall an abandoned place. Restless Natives 1985 was filmed here when bus station was still operating....Enjoy.

I was working in an architects office on the design of this development in the late 1960s!

I think this place is amazing too. It’s a complete time warp. It’s incredible that it’s still standing, pretty much everything of this vintage has been demolished or modernised - the Savoy Centre has recently been ‘modernised’ sadly.

It's a typical 70's eyesore. I live in those flats and walk through there everyday. It's a monstrosity and the council should've been prosecuted for it.

😂 ahh you’re talking rubbish, I also live there ( since 1982) it’s a pleasure to live there, and Glasgow West Housing Association are fantastic.
      Yeah, I’m being sarcastic 😂
Sadly I’m old enough to remember the bus station in all its glory, and long before the concierge came in 1991 ( previously in was resident caretakers ( one per block) the good old days ( if ever we had them)

@@46Ashgrove I absolutely despise Glasgow West Housing Association. Takes forever for repairs. And now there's no 24 hour consierge. Disgraceful.

I worked for an IT company who were based in the Anderston Centre from around 1993 - 1999, and have good memories of the quirky layout of the offices in there. As well as the 'greasy spoon' takeaway shop which I frequented.
I actually remember going into Comet shop as a young child in the late 70s which was located there too.

Love how the DJ shop have a 70s style font. Reminds me of the old radio Clyde font.

Next to Glasgow sound shop , the building with the Blue roller door , I think was a small former fire stn , which existed in the 80s .

I remember this back in the 1970s. Radio Clyde started in there and with its bus station shops and moving walkways it seemed so futuristic. A shame it didn't last long. They need another dock to put the rubble into.

I am going to go here next time I am in Glasgow :). A pity though I would love to see inside the building too. But not worth breaking in. End up being arrested 🤣 but really curious to see the inside of some of these abandoned shops. Maybe nothing much to see but would still like to see nevertheless. Btw I would be same I noticed you were out of breath a bit. I noticed I am like that if I am walking and recording video.

Ailsa Stores, a supermarket, stood on the corner adjacent to Hannah House. I believe it later became Presto. I also think Comet was previously an electrical goods store called McConemy.

Couldn't it be possible to restore the site in some guise to reduce the housing lists in Glasgow, especially when living in City Centres is fast becoming the in thing?

They may be trying to rejuvinate the area, but after stabbing through it's heart with a hideous motorway, it may be too late! You'd have to get rid of the motorway! Looks like the 74 has made it's surroundings less pleasant too! These areas around urban motorways just aren't places you really want to be!

Lick of paint and some filler here n there and it'd make a good film set for something based in the 70s and 80s.

The travelators entered the red based lower section of building. Clearly visible in 3D mode on Google Earth. Walk up Douglas Street from ArgyllStreet and look left before you get to the office block over the road. Was the original Radio Clyde 261 office still there or the original Comet store premises? Part of the complex was used as one of the volunteer hubs for the COP26 Climate Change Conference. As one of the volunteers I can say that it was very confusing trying to find it. It couldn't be signposted in case any activists decided to try and gain entry. It was still a fair distance away from the perimeter of the Blue Zone where the delegates would go through security to the conference. I think the whole place should be converted into safe places for homeless people to go. No doubt some fat cat developer will have it bulldozed to replace it with a swanky hotel.
