Welcome back and love the video Rich! Would love to see you build on the gospel theme with a video on the long, over the bar, licks they play. As an intermediate player I find I can play the shorter fills well but struggle to build longer more interesting ones. Thanks!
i've been aware of the lower/upper relationship for a long time but, once again, you've opened my eyes even wider. never made this connection. i've not even touched my bass yet but i guarantee you, you've just leveled up my playing with this lesson.
Rich, first of all, thank you so much for sharing your time and talent with the rest of us---you're such a blessing to the bassist community! I'm reaching out to ask if you could you give us some drills or excercises to help increase plucking speed? PLEASE!! I'm having a real difficult time getting past about 85 bpm 16th notes, and it really hampers me from playing some cool riffs and tunes. I'm definitely not all about speed, by any means, but it would be really helpful to not get totally sidelined when a couple of beats of 16th notes pop into a song above 80. Many thanks for all you do, and may God richly bless you!
Welcome back! Man, "Steve Coleman & the Five Elements" ! What a great gig to be in! 'Black Magik', changed my life ! As usual, from you, great advices and tips (& great sound)! Never fails! Love your 'simple, useful, approach' ! Take care !
Just wanted to leave a comment, even though I have only just stared watching the video (about 1 minute in). But, I'm pretty confident that I'll pick up some valuable stuff, so thanks in advance!
No idea how I stumbled upon your channel but after watching this, I'm subscribing. You explained these ideas really well and played some awesome licks to demonstrate. Cheers mate!
Trying to write the sheet music for "I Never Loved a Man.." for my sister who's learning bass had me tearing my hair out. Eventually I learned through some convoluted route what a swing was, and that this, like a lot of Gospel and Gospel inspired music is a swing, made everything click. The groove is -- for me -- easy after that. You thump the first down beat, and the music will tell you whether you whether or not to go lightly around the second down beat or to thump it, too. Usually it's softly...softly.. THUMP.
and that’s why I always catch your vids right away, you know how to break it down. I’ve been playing for decades and never really thought to open the neck up like that, getting real Verdine vibes from just playing what I always called ornaments an octave higher, again so simple. Thanks man
Mr Brown, your lessons always offer insightful, creative ideas. I love the variety of options for a groove. Thanks so much for your teaching method. Cool and smooth.
that's what it's about in classical too, but who said this wasn't classical.....have fun, and thanks so much for the content. If i get some extra bread i'll be sure to flow some your way. Steve Coleman, wow!! You're really doin it!!!
How funny. Im not a church guy, but I was driving down the road just earlier today and was thinking about the music I make and love and thought to myself - "I need to immerse myself in some of that Old-Time Gospel Music. I need to get those passing chords figured out!" and then I open youtube and this jumps at me . .
Shoot, totally missed the fact that you toured in Europe as well, I definitely would've come to an event if time allowed it ! Well, next time, then. Welcome back !
Welcome back Rich, hope you enjoyed Europe. Great lesson as always. I had to watch it twice as your super cool tone voice relaxed me waaaay to much I kept nodding off 😂 (hard day at work😢) ❤
Hey Rich - love your teaching style. Humbly requesting if you could do a video on the Dilla Time, D'Angelo type dragging bass style. I've watched other bass videos but never quite hits the mark.. Feel like you could tackle it in a way that actually connects. Thanks and thanks for all the great content!
Hey I had a chance to sample some of the “Live In Paris” recording. Great stuff,Man! Any chance you guys would be coming through Cleveland’s Bop Stop venue? It’s a great spot.
Thank you Rich for sharing! Those upper octave bass fill at the right moment get me a stank face from the audience everytime! From your experience, can you give us some examples on when an upper octave bass fill will be appropriate when playing with a drummer ? Since in video you often play alone so it got me curious
Just listened to PolyTropos. Wow, what an incredible album. Would you ever consider a lesson from RinsetheAlgorithm Urban Nocturnal? Love that bassline. Thanks.
I appreciate the fact that you have other/better things to do than make youtube videos, but I wanted to let you know that it's nice to see you back here. Question: any change to see the Jeremy Ledbetter trio in/near Amsterdam in the foreseeable future? Tx. Godspeed.
We're currently planning a European tour for next year. When Jeremy asked me about European venues, Bimhuis (my favourite venue in the world) was at the very top of my list. Fingers crossed!
Good Day to you, great to have you back !! Sounds like you've been very busy. Where can we order a copy of your album ?!! Looking forward to playing along with you this evening, which is when I will check out the rest of this video 😉.As always, thank you for sharing. Looking good Mr. Brown. Your face looks stress free and very happy. God Bless you 😎✌️
@@richbrownbass Thanks, I will look them up. I watch your left hand as it seems to just hover over the fret, and i notice your right hand, you do the thumb on the bar thing. So I was wondering how you do it. Love your podcast.
Great lesson, thank you... i really love your lessons but.... I love you sound too, can you help me to try to emulate that sound? i have a fender jazz but no way to sound like you. Any tips? Thank you ❤

Just found these amazing vlogs 🎉, quick question I do t play an instrument I’ve got 2 left hands 10 thumbs and tone deaf 😂 but I’m getting a Bass Ukulele because I just love the tone and have a love of Jazz. Someone handed me the Hal Leonard Bass Method complete edition, despite the shorter scale would this book work for the Ukulele Bass???
No matter how much I endeavor to learn on bass....you always give me something to think about. Mucho Appreciato~~~~
Welcome back and love the video Rich! Would love to see you build on the gospel theme with a video on the long, over the bar, licks they play. As an intermediate player I find I can play the shorter fills well but struggle to build longer more interesting ones. Thanks!

@@richbrownbassI’d appreciate a video on that too!
Yes great idea for a video

Thanks!
Bonus lesson at 4:35 - What to do when your hand is not back in the lower position on time 😊. PS where have you been in Europe?
Welcome back Rich. You always have useful info, much appreciated.
Wow
Really mind blown
God bless you for these videos !
Welcome back Rich Brown!🎶. Very cool stuff I’m gonna try it tonight. You were missed 😊
I'd love the way you teach, it makes clear and simple.
It is a great exercise to practice in the twelve keys. Thank you 💯🎶
Hi Rich, thanks again for a great lesson! I'm a guitarist, but I learn a lot from your lessons.

Please tell me you weren't in Ireland. Would love to see you live! :)
No, there were no dates in Ireland this time around. We NEED to get back to the UK soon!
@richbrownbass Ignore the UK.. Ireland is better!
And there's a Cork Jazz Fest which I think you'd like!
Love it!
