  • During a six-month tour in Afghanistan serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), veteran Craig Rands saw friends killed in front of him and, like so many others, faced years of PTSD.
Last year, after two attempts to take his own life, he decided to take drastic action, to do something that in the UK would be considered illegal.
He flew to Peru to take an ancient plant remedy and psychedelic drug found in the Amazonian jungle, and now says he is "totally" cured.
    Hannah King reports.

I have been depressed for a long time, but after taking shrooms few months ago, l feel much happier and highly motivated and my ADHD gone , lost a ton of anxiousness and had a few epiphanies about how I should live my life. I decided to buy an ounce for backup, but haven’t yet felt the need to take any more since then.

The doctor who is against this new treatment made two arguments. The treatment is expensive as it could take 8 treatments for a cure, and that we don’t know if it might cause harm.
    My rebuttal:
    1. For the cost, if the cure takes 8 sessions with 2 specialists that is expensive for the NHS. If the PTSD patient is 30 years old, should NHS pay for 8 sessions and the patient is cured - or pay for therapy, counselling, medication, GP for the next 50 years (assuming lifetime of 80yrs)?
    2. Future effects not fully known. Isn’t that the whole point of the research the other doctors want to do? All medications have side-effects, from slight discomfort to lethal. Grab a bottle of Aspirin™️, Tylenol™️, Ibuprofen🇪🇪, or equivalent and read known side-effects (one of which is a headache, pure irony). We innovate by scientific research, and any doctor that doesn’t agree is in the wrong profession.

I know a young person who had some issues, went on a journey to South America, came back a different person… far worse in many ways.
Much of the life previously known was gone, no longer even a memory of it. No desire to work. Does not like it that work is required to exchange for others to provide basics like food & shelter. Now questions things like if taking controlled substances are bad, after consuming & being in an abnormal state.
College educated. Before, used to work as a safety engineer. Now, does virtually nothing, currently dependent upon a disabled elderly parent.
Some will call this anecdotal, but the behavior difference is clear & employment history are hard facts. In my youth… we called such people “burn outs” for a reason. Similar behaviors are exhibited.
Not wanting to work for food & shelter, when physically able, is not a beneficial side effect of such things. Care must be taken, with powerful chemical agents.

Psychedelics can be bad for some people, and traumatised people need support when they do psychedelics. From what I've seen, they only cause big problems with people who were already predisposed to schizophrenia. More testing is needed, and there should be a questionnaire to identify potential risk factors, e.g. a family history of schizophrenia etc. They should only be taken in a safe environment, with friendly people who know how to help people work through trauma. But anyway, this kind of care is needed for all patients. People with a chronic illness are more likely to be abused and traumatised. Abuse can cause chronic illnesses. I read a study that said depression makes diabetes 4.5 times more expensive to treat, and other studies have shown the same pattern. Doctors who aren't trauma-informed can do a lot of harm, no matter what medications they prescribe. It shouldn't be so hard for doctors to just be caring with their patients. It makes such a huge difference in outcomes, it should be taught in every medical school.
