Best damn thing they ever got rid of on a rig. Alot of hands out there missing fingers, or dead from that damn thing. I chunked it for 4 years back in the 80's.
True .... there was an art to throwing chain - the guy in the video was a hack ... he started with bad wraps on the pipe ... had a kid lose 3 fingers in the chain .... I still remember him holding his hand and looking down at it with his eyes and mouth wide open ... didn't make a sound ....
I hired a real smart-ass to be a roughneck on evening tour and he was experienced but the toolpusher didn't know him and asked him why did he want to work on a drilling rig. His response had us laughing for 10 minutes! "I was told that every rig keeps dope in 5 gallon buckets, each rig had it's own pusher and you spend all day "tripping"!

Worked on drilling rigs in the 70's and 80's. I was a floorhand, lead-tongs, chainhand/motor man, derrickman, and driller. Got a job as a drilling/production superintendent for an independent oil company but when oil dropped to $9/barrel it ALL VANISHED! 😮

Anyone know what the sword/plunger looking thingy at 1:10 is used for? I know it's a dumb question, but I can't figure out why they need it unless they check if the pipe is not clogged or something but idk if that is even possible for an oil rig :P

I really wish I could understand exactly what's going on here. what they do with that chain is fucking terrifying, and I can't find any good explanations anywhere. I get that they are attaching another section of pipe, but what purpose does the chain throwing serve? I'd also like to know who first invented this horrifying technique, and how many fingers he lost before he got it right.
The chain is from my knowledge is used to thread the pipe in and to thread it out first it’s broken with the two big tongs and the rotary table on the floor will be spun
Waste oil is used as fuel for heating systems in mechanical shops. Plus, it’s used as fuel for some older freight ships. Not sure if that is still the case in the 2020’s , but was used yrs ago.
Most of the Petroleum Engineers I know are POC, while most of the roughnecks I know are white. So the POC are actually in higher positions. My partner is a Petroleum Engineer from Egypt with a PhD, so I have met many people in the industry through conferences and events over the years. My partner said we he was in college the people coming from American high schools were extremely far behind, especially in Mathematics and physics. Both are extremely important in PE, so many of them didn't make it through the program.
@@nathanielnachtigall7074 No they aren't. Not according to them. They make a huge joke out of the US census calling them white to try to minimize the number of brown people. It is time to get right with Jesus. You aren’t going to automatically enter into heaven if you have lied or stolen or had premarital sex. Even one of those makes you worthy of hell fire. Don’t deceive yourself! The punishment of sin is hell fire. Jesus died so you can get a clean slate and forgiveness of a future sin when we confess it. When you start to follow him you have to strive to obey what he commands. No one will enter heaven without the blood of Jesus over you. No other way but through Jesus
I can only imagine the sense of sheer relief after that chain bites, tears through your palms, you look down and still have all ten digits.
😅
Throwin a spinnin chain is easy money got numerous jobs just because I weren’t scared of it til I started workin derricks

A seven wrap make up. I never needed more than five.

What’s the purpose of the chain does it actually bite and winch that pipe tight?
It spins the pipe in, and the tongs torque it up.
Oh yeah it bites. People have lost a lot of fingers throwing chain. But they don't anymore in the US. At least not anywhere that I'm aware of.
Thanks for the replies!
why doesn't the rig have a kelly spinner . fatser and safer
