This is a good connection. Still fresh water so it is still very shallow where ever they are . Worm hand knows how to unbite the tongs because of downhole backwards torque. Driller brings up the joint in the mouse hole perfectly to add to the string. Throwing chain ....can’t decide if it was more fun than latching elevators.

Ok my turn now. I was roughnecking in 1975. SEDCO 703. Magnus field Wildcatting. Contractor BP. I am surprised by a number of things. Breaking out with the rotary table against the tong. Then spinning out , you can see the reverse torque spinning the table back to the left, chance of a back off increased, bad practice. the drilling fluid seems to be water. makes me wonder how deep they are. As for speed of connection They are working ok not faster than their ability. It's easy to see how many injuries were caused by this method of chain spinning the connection . I managed to keep all my fingers.
I suspect that the pipe spinners & iron roughnecks were introduced more for the sake of the pipe and threads than for the roughnecks. running that chain acrosss the threads time & time again led to damage , washouts & twistoffs.
All the best to roughnecks everywhere. Stay a lert, the industry needs lerts.

    • @richardsouthern4248
      @richardsouthern4248 3 года назад +9

@@frankthetank8216 Frank, I spent many an hour dancing around the rotary table of drilling rigs in the Permian Basin. I have moved on to other pursuits, but here is my explanation. I’ll use some terms without explanation just out of laziness. Maybe more than you asked for anyway.
As the drill bit goes deeper, pipe must be added in lengths of approx. 30 feet each. The process is called “making a connection.” The Kelly, the pipe above the smaller yellow thing in the video is pulled up and disconnected from the pipe in the drill hole-using tongs, which are nothing more than large wrenches hooked to a capstan (cathead) that applies enough torque to the business end of the tongs to “break” the tightened bond or tighten the bond between the Kelly and the drill pipe. (Depends on exactly the task at hand whether tongs are tightening or loosening.)
(That pipe in the hole is now held firmly in place by something called “slips” which are put in and pulled out manually. Otherwise, the pipe would fall into the drill hole and have to be “fished out.” Don’t ask.)
Using the mechanical power of the rotary table, the drill pipe is then backed off from the Kelly. This is way faster than continually setting and resetting the tongs to do the loosening. Once free of the drill stem, the Kelly is manually swung over to a joint (30 feet) of drill pipe seen resting in the mouse hole and set into the box end of the joint in the mouse hole. The Kelly may be full of water or drilling mud compound and thus is allowed to drain before being moved over and set into the joint. (This is a courtesy to the crew.)
Once the two are set in place but not yet tightened, a pair of tongs (wrench) called the back ups are moved up onto the bottom of the Kelly. There is a chain coiled around the joint of pipe which is picked up by a crewman.
At that point, the driller pulls a lever that causes the chain to be coiled onto a cylinder (Off camera) and that action causes the pipe joint to spin clockwise and tighten onto the Kelly. When it is tight enough to cause the chain to spin to no effect, the back up tongs will start to tighten at which point another set of tongs is added below the pipe join and the two tongs acting as tightener and back up secure the connection between Kelly and joint.(Imagine a plumber using two pipe wrenches: One to tighten and the other to back up and keep the other piece of pipe from turning.)
The tongs bights (Grip) are broken by unlocking the tongs, the Kelly and joint are pulled out of the mouse hole. During this process, the back up tongs are locked onto the pipe stem in the drill hole and the chain is spiraled around the pipe’s box end which conceals threads in readiness for the next step.
The Kelly and joint are swung over the drill pipe, the pin end of the joint is stabbed into the box end of the drill string, the chain is “thrown” from the box end of the drill stem to the pin end of the joint, the cat head tightens the chain and “spins” up the threads as far as possible. The backup tong is raised, the lead tong goes under and force is applied to the two “wrenches” until the driller is satisfied that the connection is good.

The tongs are broken. The Kelly and drill stem are pulled up far enough for the slips to be removed and the joint is run into the hole, the Kelly is seated in the hole on the rotary table and drilling commences.
A new joint is added to the mouse hole in anticipation of the next connection and the crew goes about with other chores.
Hope this helps explain the video. It will probably elicit a few comments from hands who may differ in what I have to say. That’s alright bcz things have changed in the oil patch and my experiences ended in the winter of 1966.

Sorry to hear that. Imo the oilcompanies should stand for any medical procedures needed to help in injured workers and their rehabilitation. I wouldn't work in such a hazardous enviroment unless i had written on paper that the company i worked for would pay any hospitlebills incase of accident, or a healthy retirementcheck if i sustained permanent damages which led to some form of handicap.

you can only drill so deep until you need to add more pipe so you can drill deeper,
they are adding sections of pipe so they can find a deeper pocket of oil(hopefully)
you keep adding more sections until you hit the mother load or start a new hole.

The workers get paid no matter what, it's the big wigs who make millions (billions) that are making the money, and they win some and they lose some, which is why they pay people to work way faster than they should and use less than safe practices just to get that extra nickle!
