    My Dad and I did the same thing we hit our goal of 2,000 acres it was cool that we met our goal but between the excavating and the farm it was just to much we were stretched thin so we dropped some acres that weren't very profitable now we can concentrate on the good acres we do have and more excavating plus I have more time to start a beef herd....when you said 2940 I was hoping you were going to say in needs a PTO clutch because thats what mine needs

      @@dirtgrainsteelthank you very much for stopping by. Glad to hear you're having success on the journey ahead of me.
      ugh, 2940 pto work, I say this half tongue-in-cheek but also been there done that. Find a nice 6400.
      The 2000 series tractors are fantastic for the first 10 to 15,000 hours and then they can become very expensive.
      To do the PTO clutch is a split between the transmission and clutch housing but depending on what's worn in there it can start to get expensive and so an Allstate's ag parts type company to get used parts from can help.
      I've done some of them and you split it. Fix the clutch pack you know aus und back so lassen parts and you back together . But then we've had some that with using used parts. You're still at $6,000 to get it back together.
      The hi-Lo unit or the reverser unit? Whichever option you have and then the PTO clutch they sit on a shaft and the shaft has the steel ceiling rings like piston rings that ride inside the Hub. So as long as the Hub and the shaft aren't worn out you should be good to go for a economical repair
      If you do that job when you take off the shift cover, there's two big pipes on the right and replace them. They fatigue over time and crack, and then your transmission pump is just putting oil back into the transmission case.

    Totally understand your plan on giving up the rental ground. I’ve been loosing acres almost yearly. Started to focus my owned ground and making that more productive. And guess what??????Still in business!!! Good luck on your next chapter of your operation, interested in watching along.

      Can we joke that there's a lot of people that grew up handling cattle and that's why we have so few people handling cattle

    Nice plan. I don't envy the margins on the conventional grain markets that's for sure....sometimes the more you work the more you lose! barely any money in organic commodity markets either if you buy manure and haul to elevators far away.

    I decided especially with the competition to rent land in my area and buying it being out of the question to rent 5 to 10 area parcels that is pretty much someone's back yard. Mostly I'll have hay and some corn but also looking at cereal rye to possibly harvest as a rotational crop. I can replace about a third of the corn in my steers ration with it and the cost to grow it is negligible. Also working to get the sheep into more of my crop rotation. People like seeing them in their backyard. My sheep don't test the fences and are very easy grazers. I pick ear corn and I'm working on resurrecting and old Allis Chalmers All Crop combine for my oats and rye. I don't want the expense of owning a combine and I can't get anyone around here to run grain for me. Soybeans are out of the question because of the white tail deer. Corn gets enough deer damage as it is. I'm doing my own spraying now and I'm starting to use my sprayer for fertilizer application. Hiring that stuff out has not worked out very well. A 4020, a handful of two cylinders and a couple Olivers is all I need. A second 4020 maybe someday. The sheep are going to be my best money maker because we have the best open market in the country plus the overall inputs are low. Time moving fences and trying to streamline that.

      @@danw6014 Picking up them small pieces with sheep has to work pretty good?!
      On some of them you must be able to get the land pretty cheap because you're telling the property owner that you're going to restore that 10 acres?

    • @danw6014
      @danw6014 День назад

      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 usually around $50 an acre. Some are glad they don't have to mow it. There are people who don't want anything done and let that land turn to scrub brush.

    Good decision on expansion. Big acres means you’re really working more for the bank than for you. Nice for a 30-year-old with lots of years to pay it down…

      @@douglassellers7528 them farmalls were sharp little machines. Our customer base is mostly John Deere guys so if I say how nice them little red tractors were you get a lot of the two-cylinder guys that kind of roll their eyes at you. But I would rather sit in a platform with a normal clutch and brake set up and a smooth little 4-cylinder purring away. Shane, the weird platform on a two-cylinder with that engine hammering away

    Everyone and their mom still wants to cash crop around here. I used to want more ground to rent, but I’m content with what I do rent. I’ll let those other guys chase their tail around. Milking 60 cows keeps me plenty busy and they make me money. Hopefully you will have more time for making RUclips videos!
