      You and me both! I still have a lot of challenges to overcome but I'm knocking them out one at a time. If you know someone with hangar space in the DC Metro area let me know ;-) That is the biggest hurdle at the moment!

    Wow Carl. Not only do you get an incredible machine in such good condition you also keep something obviously a part of your family IN the family. I have no doubt you will take great care of this machine. As Sponz has already said you will get to share many memories with your daughter along this part of your life and hopefully she is successful enough in her adult life AND carries the interest in this aircraft to take it on when that time comes. Until then enjoy what ever time you both get to have in and around this airplane.

    Got our first Stearman in 1963 ! It was also painted in the Army scheme ! N 206J was my very first tail wheel aircraft to fly ! After learning how to handle her on the ground, we learned how to fly her! I found out she dosen't like straight and level !

    For my 13th birthday, my grandfather bought me a ride in a Stermam. It was my first time to fly and it was 55 years ago. I've been a wing nut ever since.

      There are actually 3 Stearman at the Richmond airport at the moment. My Uncle Neal didn't fly out of Richmond Indiana until the last decade or so. Depending on when you grew up there she may not have been there yet. I'm hoping in the next 2 years she can become a regular sight in the skies around this area!

    The Stearman is a challenging airplane to learn to fly. Add 450 HP and it's gonna be a crazy handful. Be prepred to be incredibly humbled by this thing. Especially (ESPECIALLY) if this is your first ever full scale airplane you've ever flown. Take your time with training and do it right with the right person or people within the Stearman community. She looks great and you're going to love flying a 450 Stearman!

      Thanks! I am in 100% agreement with you. I am honored for the opportunity to steward this aircraft and I am in no hurry to solo her. I'll be spending the foreseeable future training in Stearmans and have met several great instructors in this area, including the airshow pilot and wing-walker who will be flying her back with me. I won't for an instant pretend that my background in RC has prepared me for an aircraft like this and I WILL learn the RIGHT way to care for and fly her. I was SO lucky to have the ability to chase this dream when the opportunity presented itself.

      I'm SO lucky to be honest. Without my uncle's generosity and our shared passion for these aircraft this wouldn't be possible. I'm still processing the whole thing.

    This is very exciting, but real Stearman instructors are rare. I’m trusting you’re not just using some CFI. Obviously by now, you have experienced having the weight of the fuel in that top wing, especially when applying brakes. I see this video is about a year old. How’s it going?

  • @LJDRVR

    Lovely airplane, Carl. If I may offer some unsolicited advice? Find a J-3 and an instructor. Learn the basics, solo, get thirty to fifty hours of flying under your belt. Take that solid foundation of airmanship and stick and rudder to the Stearman and then continue your training. It was good enough for USAAF cadets over 70 years ago, you'll do well with it too.

    • @CarlLydickRC
      @CarlLydickRC  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for the guidance! That is effectively my plan at the moment. I've met an amazing community around this area, many with Stearmans (although not many with 450s). My current plan involves FINALLY knocking out PPL and getting as many hours in tailwheel as possible, likely in one of several J-3 cubs in the area. The gentleman who flew her back from Indiana teaches in a J-3 and in Stearman and after speaking with a LOT of folks in the area my plan is to work with him as much as possible and only move forward to the next phase after his endorsement.
      Lucille is a lifelong project and while I'm eager to get to the point I can fly her I will NOT cut corners with training and will not take any unnecessary or foolhardy risks.

    How does all your time and money NOT go into such a beautiful aircraft? RC….what’s that?

    • @CarlLydickRC
      @CarlLydickRC  2 года назад

      I'm sure there will be some of that, but I can be much more "reasonable" with my RC builds and still have a great time. To be honest I've got SO MUCH RC gear and parts on hand that I could probably build a dozen planes without buying anything 🤣

    Why do guys call everything a she

    • @CarlLydickRC
      @CarlLydickRC  2 года назад

      It's a long-standing tradition and the way things have been done for a long time. There is actually a lot of interesting conversation around why. I've seen references to "mother or goddess figures guiding and protecting" a ship as well as people arguing that it helps reinforce a sense of care and affection in the aircrew that operate and maintain the ship (until recently usually young men).
      With sailing ships, where this tradition seems to have started, some take the motherhood analogy even further. Everyone aboard a ship is "inside her", like a womb, and they all depend on her until they are delivered to their destination.
      Might be a longer answer than you were looking for but I think the history of that tradition is pretty cool. It isn't JUST because us guys want to sleep with our vehicles 🤣 (although I wouldn't mind waking up next to this one 🥰)

    • @joejody7814
      @joejody7814 2 года назад

      Dates back to sailing ships and the whole unpredictableness of nature and man's attempt to navigate HER.
