Congratulations, Love the Mill Scale! I think that the Mill Scale is one of the best Craft Smokers out there. My top picks would be: -Mill Scale -Moberg -FatStack Smokers ( not in any particular order). I’m sure Franklin is good and all, it just seems kinda of small. Primitive Pits/Workhorse Pits is also very good. I’m also interested in knowing the length of the Firebox and Cookchamber! Thank you!
I'm getting the workhorse 1975 due to 3/8" steel all around, cowboy grill, top stack, and 4 temp probes and cheaper the price than Mill scale. I payed $3600 with shipping compared to what I was going to pay with Mill scale, $4,800!
beautiful pit. I strongly considered getting one myself but being im in Florida didn’t wanna pay heavy shipping charges so i decided to get a Shirley so i can drive up there and pick it up myself
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Man I know you've been looking for this for a while now. I know this will be an awesome pit for you and I can't wait to see what all you do with it bro. And awesome that you now have that Texas post oak wood to burn as well. If you need anything to help with the fire management or anything, you know how to reach me my man. Again congratulations bro. You DESERVE it!!!!👊👊👊
Hey bro, I always appreciate the support Alton! I was either going with hickory or the oak, and I just went with the oak. I’m about to break this thing in 🤘🤘
Thanks for the informative video! How long is the cooking chamber and the cooking grate? Also, what do you use to get the ashes out during a cook? I am not used to a lip at the bottom of the firebox, so I wouldn't be able to simply scrape the ashes straight out and in to a bucket.
Nice video. Please, could you share all dimensions of this grill with us? Mill scale shows diameters, but I am interested about how long is smoke stack, how long is main chamber and also how long is firebox. Thank you very much.
It's a great looking pit. The first smoker I had is one I made out of 22" well casing and was my second welding project. Talk about a labor of love. That was 15 years ago and it's still amazing. Yours looks like it will stand the test of time as well. Cheers amigo. Enjoy it.
I just got back from Lockhart last Tuesday after driving from Seattle to pickup my 94gal. In Lockhart. Caleb and the boys loaded it and strapped it down on my truck and we headed back to Seattle. Maybe shoulda had it shipped but it was a fun trip with my best buddy. Going to season mine this weekend. 🤙🏻
Also, Chuds BBQ pits are really good. They are located pretty close to mill scale in the south Austin area. Chuds Is one of the only smoker builders to offer a 3/8 inch wall thickness on the cook chamber and 5’ long, it’s a beast at almost 1000 lbs!
Dang man you did your research. That’s a nice looking pit. You will for sure get your money’s worth out of it. Should last a long long time. I love how that thermometer is at grate level. I got a Chargriller Grand Champ XD a $500 box grill. But it doesn’t compare to a pre fabricated offset smoker like your man. Enjoy it bro 👍👍
Great vid man! Living in Austin everyone in the craft food industry here knows Millscale! Their smokers get shipped out all over the world (odd that RUclipsrs never really caught on, but good for you for doing your research). LSG (Lone Star Grillz) isn’t as well known here as is Millscale, so oddly enough part of my decision to buy a LSG was that everyone here in Austin either has or wants a Millscale or Franklin! 😂 And I’m not even a RUclipsr! I admit Millscale makes a metal af looking smoker, what I ultimately decided on was LSG’s raw metal builds (no previously used tanks) 1/2” firebox, insane welds, and they operate their small family business just outside of Houston (My wife and I lived and got married in Houston over 20 years ago… so there’s some sentimentality in that purchase as well!)
I strongly considered an LSG or a workhorse pit but at the end of the day I had to go with the good ole Mill scale. Thanks for the feedback and checking out the video
That's an awesome pit. Congratulations! Question for you. What other craft pits did you consider and what was your decision criteria? I've been looking at Workhorse Pits, but Mill Scale is definitely on the list as well. Thanks for any feedback.
I actually considered workhorse pits. I don’t think you can go wrong with most pits in this class of smoker. I’ve heard Shirley fabrication is really good, also Moberg and Jambo pits. Those fat stack smokers look really good too, but at the end of the day it was the look of this and just the way it’s built, is extremely well done.
Congrats man! I will be getting mine soon and have been looking up info on delivery, so this vid is super helpful. Please post some vids of your cooks!
Bro this pit is bad ass, congrats! I've been in the market for a couple of years for a smoker to replace my old new braunfels pit. I ultimately chose Franklin's pit because of price. As of today your Mill Scale pit is close to $5,000! I should have pulled the trigger sooner to save me some money. Congrats again, enjoy it.
Can you please review this after 6 months of use? I have 2 traeger, and I made a 275gal drum smoker which I have mounted on a trailer. And I just bought a customized grill from lone star grillz out of texas. Looking to see your outcome. Great video, but $4100 is very expensive for this.
I’ll do a review for sure! I agree 4100 is pricey but the way I see it is, you can easily spend around 3k for a ton of different smokers out there. I was being extremely picky with this so I didn’t mind spending the extra cash. Thanks for checking out the video
Awesome smoker, those saying 4100 is a lot of money for it have no idea how much work goes into something like that. Looking forward to seeing you put it to work
I went with the raw steel. I definitely wasn’t paying anymore money lol. It will be fine if I take care of it and keep it seasoned, or put some linseed oil on there
Congrats on an awesome pit! I am strongly considering ordering one of these for myself. Do you get any leaking at the base of the smoke stack where it bolts? I was just wondering if putting a gasket there might help seal that connection.
No leakage around the smoke stack at all. There is a little smoke that comes out through the bottom of the cook chamber door but it doesn’t affect any temp retention, and you barley notice it. Get one you’ll love it. Trust me
Did you consider the firebox lid? I'm looking to purchase a similar smoker with a firebox lid option, but can't decide. I feel like the firebox will be more solid without it, but that's just a guess.
I was looking at a Workhorse pit 1975 that has the cowboy firebox with the lid. But like you, I feel like it’s more solid without it. But at the end of the day it’s probably not a big deal
I considered Mills Scale 94 gallon offset, I'm located about an hour from Lockhart, but when Sonny Moberg advertised he was building 40 Back yard 100 gallons offsets which he rarely does I had to pull the trigger and go with a Moberg - Sonny Moberg is 78 miles from my house. The pricing is about the same - I'm not knocking Mills Scale, they build great pits. Moberg puts the same quality in his backyarders as he does his 1000 gallon pits which are used in the Top BBQ joints in Texas. I have own several high end pits (Klose traditional flow, and reverse flows, Ole Hickory . But this Moberg is the best I have ever owned. Oh yeah tip, on fire management buy a small lowes shop cordless blower to help get ur smoldering logs to catch fire....You'll thank me later. Enjoy
Yea man those Mobergs are sweet! You can’t go wrong with one of those. You’re lucky to live so close to all of that stuff in Texas. It saves on shipping costs LOL. Yeah I got a blower and I love it because breathing all in at smoke was getting pretty bad. Thanks for checking out the video!
Awesome addition bruh…. I have similar stick burner and a 640. I can get very similar results to the Franklin with my 640 using an amazin tube- without the fire management headaches- I’m also ready to roll in 30 minutes with the 640. We do think the Franklin gives a deeper sweet-smoke compared to 640 and use it when time’s not an issue…. It takes me about an hour to get the fire and temp settled in on the stick burner. You’ll want some lump and smaller splits to set your coal bed- lots of good videos out there…. Enjoy the ride and keep the vids coming. PS- When we fire the big girl up- we cook a bunch of stuff- brisket/ribs/burgers…. Vacuum pack the extras for quick barbecue any time…
That’s awesome man, I have a 640 also. I’ve watched million videos on fire management and stuff like that but I guess you never really know until you do it firsthand. The first pit I ever had was a Brinkman Trailmaster, and I thought I knew what I was doing but I had no clue 😂. It’s definitely going to be a learning experience. Thanks for watching Brent
Man. That's nice to hear. I have a 640, have always wanted a stick burner but deep down I know I don't have the time with my wife and 2 small kids. This helps quell my desire for a workhorse pit
Congrats!! Can't wait to see more cooking videos. People always ask me....why didn't you have kids....why didn't you get married?? My answer.....because of the freedom to make these purchases!!! 🤣🤣 work hard....enjoy life!!
It kind of looks like you might be in Arizona. If so, where did you find Post Oak wood? Beautiful smoker, sir! I’m sure you are truly going to enjoy it. Some of my best times are spent tending over the fire in my smoker and obviously eating what comes off of it. I’m excited for you!

I think you bought a solid smoker;but for $4,100 you paid alot of their wages to build it,plus $700 shipping is keeping them in business, its not the smoker that makes good bbq it's the pitmaster.
for that price you got ripped off. missing hand rail to move it ariound a table and another high small rack with that i can see near the price but very little cooking space i just dont see would go with a pecos instead. good thing when i make the i make sure its full complete. the welds are good though
Man. I hate to tell you. It looks defective. I'll take it off your hands. I'll even split the cost of freight shipping with you when I take it off your hands.
It did seem like they almost lost control for a second lol. I’m not sure what the right way is though. They didn’t say a word the whole time, not friendly at all. Probably pissed that I was filming, but they had masks on so nobody could tell who they were anyway
I have owned Yoder. LSG, and now a Shirley. So far I haven't found anything to match the Shirley but I do respect the millscales.
I’ve heard good things about those Shirley pits! Thanks for checking out the video
@@RGsFood your welcome. And the rumors are true. Built like a rank and drafts like a freight train.

I've almost decided this is going to be the pit for me. I'll likely get some of the options though, like the plancha on the fire box.
