I’m a game dev and your point on repeating games just in different ways is 100% true. That’s why I think people like google stadia and Amazon Luna need to stop making consoles and start making franchises based off a character like Nintendo did. Then build games for the character off his story.

Open world games have so many repetitive missions and it takes hours to start enjoying the game. But even after that it starts getting boring. Especially if you sit in one place for hours it makes that mission longer. That's why I'm playing my steam deck instead of my ps5. With a handheld like the steam deck. You are enjoying the games more.

I bought a PS5 console and tried multiple games for a couple hours at a time before realizing how over-stimulating the graphics and immersion were to a point where it felt tedious to play instead of fun. Like it was activating too much of my brain if that makes sense. I work six days a week and do karate 2-3 days a week so I just want to relax during my free time, but PS5 was not a relaxing experience that was a brutal sensory overload that made me even more exhausted. Returned the console and went back to my PS2 where all the fun and simple games are.

Video games used to be created by developers with dreams. Now, they are made by businessmen specifically to rip you off. Also, where do we go from 8K? The biggest leap was in the '90s, from 2D to 3D. Games have barely changed since the mid-2000's only the graphics have improved due to more powerful hardware. But we've seen it all. Take cover, kill the bad guys, move on, repeat. You know what to expect. I only play early 2000s games using a GameCube emulator.

I had a great time getting 100% on San Andreas Definitive Edition, but now the only other games I tend to play are FIFA 23 and Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, and I'm sick of playing them. Games used to be so much more fun on PS1 and PS2, and it felt like the developers really put work into the gameplay. Now that I'm 42 I barely play any games at all after buying cyberpunk that was a complete disappointment and then elden ring which is impossible for me to enjoy because it's so difficult. My theories are that I might have ADHD or I finally grew up or games are just garbage money grabs. I would love to be able to enjoy games again.

I think it's because videos games today are just garbage. The spark that made video games fun are gone. The gaming industry lost it's touch. The younger generation will never understand. Gaming isn't what it used to be. The games these days are long, repetitive and just plain boring. There is nothing original and unique about it anymore. The ps2 and early ps3 era will always be my favorite era of gaming.

    • @vividvulpe9842

I don't think videogames today provide the same experience they once did. I look forward to games like Scorn that's coming out this fall to [hopefully] provide a more engaging and immersive experience. Games need to tell a story and sell an experience. Think of games you may remember when u were younger - for me, the ones that I remember are Gran Turismo, Turok, Perfect Dark, 007, and super smash brothers and few others. Everything else seems like a blur. I look forward to continuing my campaign in Kingdom Come Deliverance because it tells a story, which you help pave the way for. I also agree with you, Mark, that I and much of the population are also suffering from ADHD from the use of cell-phone apps that provide immediacy of whatever it is they provide. And I agree with you, Lol, that game development needs to tighten up on more unique characters and stories- it's okay if a game doesn't appeal to the masses, that is what will make it good.

Back then I could play for 12 hrs straight, now i just don't get motivated...the feeling of fun is gone. Idk what's happening. Maybe it's life. I used to think that now that we're all getting older and older, games are getting less fun. But i mean elden ring dropped and i easily pumped 250 hours into it like it was nothing, that just doesnt happen for me. We all also know that the gaming industry is at a point where its more focused on the monetization than anything else. Triple A games alot of the time stick with trends, copy mechanics from more successful games and i think this is whats leading to this gaming burnout, we're all been playing, more or less, the same game for the last few years now.
My burnout stopped almost immediately once i started getting into indie games. Stardew valley, Don't starve and The long dark have really reignited gaming for me.

Before that though the biggest 3D leap was definitely 1995 when both SS/PS1 dropped ,that was the largest 3D leap I've ever felt. I'm an older gamer. NES, SNES, and Genesis/Megadrive were brand-new when I got into them. First console was an N64 then I got a PSone and Dreamcast. VGs back then were new and eventful, you had new genres or new spins on genres coming out all the time. It was crazy. The stories were engaging, the gameplay was refreshing. Then it started to fall apart around the 360/PS3 era for me.
Online gaming is cool and all and I played my fair share of it with Tekken and Tomb Raider which were great but unless you're looking for those types of experiences, gaming is not as engaging anymore. A lot of the AAA titles play it safe so it feels like you're doing the same thing over and over and while there's been a serious uptick in production value with adding in Hollywood level talent and multi-million dollar gaming engines to craft the most realistic stuff out there, it's been also feeling trite. But with the amount of money being pumped into these things, it's no surprise why. Some indie games offer the novel experiences that were like the older stuff I used to play but at some point, it all kind of feels like the same thing. I guess it's just getting old and seeing everything that's been done already.

It gets to a point where running away from the boss and baiting out that 1 jump attack becomes the best tactic. If you play with a shield you can atleast block these undodgeable 10 hit combos, but if you play it like old souls games youre kinda screwed imo and bosses dont feel as fun.

I'm actually a female gamer and for me gaming is boring nowadays since I have WAY too much time for it xD luckily im gonna have an apprenticeship/work soon. Not only that it doesn't feel rewarding for now, it's also cause I want to play a whole lot of other games BUT I would need a PC for it and good ones are too expensive AND buying a new game also takes time for me. So I play the same games each day, in the past I didn't care, I was younger, all was new, had some friends, but now with almost 21 years I wish I had more possibility in gaming.
I do game with my girlfriend or big brother from time to time but its hard to have fun in always the same things over and over when you are older.
The worst is when I play a game, I can play through it in a few days or at least a week or two max, meaning little Single Player games are nothing to me. I do any Idea I got, get it all to 100% and then what..? I get bored and don't know what to do. Multiplayer games keep my head up right now. Love helping and such so I enjoy coming together with other players, especially in animal or car games

I played Spider-Man 2018 and after finishing it I felt like the start of miles morales was just continued content and I had a lot of genre fatigue (burnt out on the Spider-Man in general). Almost a year later I finished miles morales in a week and I loved it. It’s a short game but I can look back and say I enjoyed every minute versus games like Valhalla I played like 12 hours and quit wondering why I’m not close to the end of the story (and it’s not just cause length as I’ve played games for 300+ hours), however I feel story driven games need a certain pace. Once they become way too spread out the narrative becomes too thin. Spider-Man and god of war had good pacing and miles morales IMO did it best. It was action packed, mechanic progressions (not just stat boosts but actual gameplay mechanic changes along the way, great narrative, and emotional ending. I think I get bored of games because most games implement grind where it’s not necessary just to increase playtime.

Bro, just watch your video, I'm thinking it's your taste in games that makes it think its boring. Now please dont attack me for it lol but since your opening up your experience in gaming I suggest you playing the persona series ONLY if you like anime. Amazing series. From the games you've listed theres plenty of games that you probably have missed on the ps3 and xbox 360, and ps4 and xbox one era. If you play the switch I can give you some game suggestions for you to play. You probably do PC games too but try some old school classics. I've played metal gear solid 1 on ps1 when I was 27 years old ( I'm 28 now). Despite of how bad the graphics are, the budgeting went to this storytelling, thriller of good voice acting characters and gameplay makes up for it. The thing is I never gave these games a chance and you'll see why these games had sequels.

    ▪︎ Spiderman

    ▪︎ Final Fantasy 16
    ▪︎ Castlevania
but still i feel bored. Gaming not like we used to. Same copy paste games that doesnt have the soul.

The game isn't anything super different from Deus Ex, a game I played 20ish years ago. So we are stuck with games that mechanically haven't changed much but insist of burning millions of hours on whatever gameplay.

Ps2 and early ps3 era was the best era of gaming for me. I had a ps2, ps3, Xbox 360, Wii and Psp. Loved all of them had so much fun. Then came the ps4 and gaming became really repetitive. Then came the ps5 the games honestly looks boring asf. Yeah graphics got better but that's it. These games are not for FUN anymore. Now it's just a money making machine it feels so soulless. The ps5 hardly has any games. If i could wish for 2 games to return on ps5 it would be Jak&Daxter and Sly Cooper. But unfortunately it will never happen...

Working Paying bills dealing the hardships of life killed the little kid that with the huge imagination that lives inside us.. Because we as gamers have evolved and understand the mechanics of video games for example we know that jump scares in a game is just a mechanic you set off when you cross a certain line knowing all this everything just seems like the same games being made in 2016 like if games from 2016 and 2024 got swapped could you really tell the difference? Bored of playing the same thing over and over again

You say games are boring and then you mention games within the shooting genre and 2k that you play. I feel like part of everyone's boredom (I was guilty of this) is due to playing too many stupid shooters and lame copy and paste sports games. Do what I did and start exploring other genres. Maybe genres you played as a kid. Give it a try. I recently got into retro gaming and went back one of my favorite games growing up that hold up really well. Games from the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 2. Explore your options. This may not work for everyone but it did for me. Stray away from the generic gamer guy who only plays COD and 2k and nothing else.

The only open world games I have in my collection is Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman 2016 and Forbidden West. Those are the only 3 open world games that I can keep coming back to without all the filler crap and quality content that I want to do, and on new game plus they are only around 7 hours long. Outside of that I just rotate games that have a solid short and sweet single player, Vanquish, Bayonetta, RE 2 Remake, New World Order/Old Blood, Doom, Zone of the Ender 2 and so on.
The term replay value is all messed up these days. It's not about having online or a game being 300 hours long with 1 million collectibles. True replay value means when you play it a 2nd, 3rd, or however many times, is it just as fun as the first time you played it by time you come back around to it. Nobody back in the day said, if only Tetrix and Pacman had online, or if only they were 100 hours long, I would buy it. People these days don't know what replay value means. Now studios need to sell a 5 hour game with 40 hours of filler and online tossed in so they will buy it.

Spider man tho i completed it in a week it was fresh for me, resident evils i love those completed most of them. What i noticed is a lot of games are either battle royale or open world story rpg and im getting tired of running around the world to do side missions and every now and then doing some main story missions that are not even that satisfying

I’m in my 40’s and I think the main reason a lot of games have gotten boring is cus they either sacrifice good story by adding repetitive missions, or just make it open world, and the big one the damned online content. As Kirito in SAO abridged would say, I play video games cus I want to avoid people, the last thing I wanna do is play online with a bunch of mouth breathers who think LMAO is how French people laugh. 4:25

  • @robbylebotha

Just keep in mind, you could learn intermediate French in 60 hours spread out over 2 hours per day.
That's why gamers generally become losers. They don't seem to grasp the value of time.
I built a app that makes me $10k per month passively, in 30 days. Fair enough I am a software engineers with 15 years experience but you get the idea. 60 hours to finish a game and feel meh, or 60 to build a prototype of a million dollar idea.... I dunno man, think about it. If you're over 21 and still grind in games....

Easy. Cluttered menus, forced tutorials, cutscenes, a focus on realism, etc. None of these things are fun.
Developers know these things aren't fun, but they make their games like that anyway now.
When average people play a game, they only want to have fun. They don't want to see the things described.
Anytime a video game is doing something that isn't fun, that can stop people from playing it. That's just common sense.
Yes, a forced tutorial can stop people from playing a game again. Because that's not why people play games. Developers can put the control information in the options screen, it's not necessary during gameplay to have a tutorial.
Like I said, the instant a game is doing something not fun, people might stop playing it.

Think I'm just tired of the shooter genre as a whole, they just feel the same to me because the gameplay loop in each of them is practically identical and has been since the inception of the genre. I used to love these games but my enjoyment for them just isn't there anymore to the point where I will now actively avoid any game that has shooting as it's core mechanic.
Having said that I've been enjoying a lot of games lately from indie developers, these games feel like they've really been made with passion, have unique concepts & interesting gameplay ideas. And on top of that most of them will not try to rip you off at every possible moment such as in AAA.
