unpopular opinion: we need "boring" but technical races like Imola, monaco or Hungary to see the real talent of a driver. not all the races can be like Vegas with 1km of DRS where everyone can overtake. tell me what you think.
Yeah but there should be a reason to watch the race and not just the results/highlights. If I know most of what the results at a track is going to be like why would you bother? The cars need to get smaller, Monaco used to be amazing at one point of time, it's not the tracks fault but the current cars have outgrown the tracks.
Yep, tracks like imola push drivers to the limits - where we can see their skill level
I liked the race, seeing half the grid doing a pit stop early, the looming threat of a safety car. The battle for the last point, and of course seeing Max and Lando having to squeeze everything they had.
@@indcredible7839 100% agree with you, if we had smaller cars we could get more action in every single circuit
Clear that Lando Norris is a legit legit world class driver.
Might be the second best driver in the world under the age of 39. Is he better than Leclerc? Maybe; maybe.
Alex throughout the weekend was a nice treat. Very knowledgeable (obviously) and very likeable as well.
Is Tommy washed? We need a podcast to discuss this
I miss Tommy, love a Max fan in the panel.
@@bitzao84 I don't know, I personally feel like Matt's dominance might be a bit boring for the fans. 🌝
If you're fortunate enough to have access to F1TV Pro, I think you'd love his race commentary alongside Joylon Palmer and David Coulthard. It's an amazing blend of unbiased, honest commentary and great knowledgeable discussion.
@@DarrylGibbs I love their commentary! I cannot stand the new dutch commentators (sinced F1 migrated to viaplay last year) so I always switch the audio channel the second I log in
Nice to see Alex join the podcast! Great commentator
I switched to F1TV and he is the reason I stayed. I really like the way he narrates the race.
Which territory are you? My F1TV doesn’t work here in the UK
@@albertopeixoto Also Im a big fan of Alex, Jolyon and David combo
he is and idk why people have to pit him and crofty against each other, they're both incredibly talented commentators and are complemented excellently by their respective former driver companions. it would never happen but would love to see a sky-f1tv crossover one day
@@GenAvAviation On testing days the crossover kinda happens
Think KMag deserved a bit more credit for starting 19th after getting blocked in Q1 in qualifying, yet made it to 12th within DRS of Hülkenberg who made Q3. On a track you "cannot overtake on", yet making most positions during start and/or overtaking on track. That was a really good effort.
Kmag was on a roll with overtakes after his pit. Was awesome to follow.
Agreed its good to see when he decides to or is allowed to actually race he does well
Yeap, he had a solid 8/10 race
Plus a few times noticed how careful he was being around other drivers. Great makeup race for kmag
Yet more proof that K. Mag is the GOAT!
People very conviniently forgetting Austin 2021 when Max defended against Lewis on 10 lap older hards. People seem to forget who Max is when he's under pressure.
Its not about forgetting max’s ability the car was struggling with tyre wear meanwhile lando was only getting better
@@Umar-gw6fy in both Austin and Imola, the F1 graphics calculated that Lewis and Lando would be in drs range with 3 laps to go and neither went on to even get drs against Max till the run down to the chequered flag. Catching up to Max is one thing, passing him is an entirely different ball game.
@@Umar-gw6fythe McLaren's worst corners were the 2 before the DRS straight. You could see Piastri losing 3-4 tenths to Sainz there every single lap. RB has great top speed as well.
Lando could've stayed with him but overtaking was never going to happen.
Mental performance that one. To the point that even GP said afterwards on the radio that they didn't think he was gonna win it.
@@yanikdavid3708 you could see Lando struggling out of the last 2 corners every single race. And he had 2 laps where he dropped back a .5 second by running wide. Honestly had he had a perfect and clean final 5 laps, he would've finished side by side most likely

Piastri spent 80% of his race trying to pass a much slower ferrari. I dont think it would have been that easy.
Much slower Ferrari what are you talking about... Piastri can only pull out 3 more seconds gap in over 30 laps after he got in front of Carlos... That litterely like 0,1 seconds per lap.
And do you even watch the race? He got in front of Carlos in lap 27 not even half of the race and you said he "Piastri spent 80% of his race trying to pass a much slower ferrari" lol
@@BrandoN-ie1np Who was he behind after Sainz boxed again? For the rest of the race maybe?
@matthewpurdon6828 My bad for forgetting about Charles if u called being over 5 seconds behind and never reach Charles DRS gap the whole race is a trying to pass. More like trying to not being dropped.
@@BrandoN-ie1np Yeah man the basis of my comment was its not easy to pass at Imola, and these guys going on about how Norris needed "one more lap" but we all know what happens when you get within 1 second. Unless you are insinuating that Max is a worse driver than Sainz and that he would easily be passed in dirty air via the pure straight line speed in a Mclaren compared to an RB? Then sure.
When Tommy and Crofty are starting a podcast 😂?
Max was just flawless in those final laps. Lando made slight errors, and that's all it took. To beat Max you have to be perfect. When Lando gets to that level, we will see a special battle
I agree with everything you've said. That being said, and maybe I'm imagining this, there is something different about Lando since Miami, I feel like. Lots of people, from commentators, pundits, (ex-)drivers, generally, people in the know, amongst which: Max Verstappen himself. They all have said that Lando is, not just, race-winner material, but world championship contender.
I think the upgrades to the car and the McLaren package itself are great. For me personally: far better than what I had hoped for. McLaren has done a great job.
Bringing it back to Lando: I felt like, in previous years, that he played the part of Max's little brother. Of course, in previous years, he didn't have the car to challenge Max, but also of track, compared to Max. He was, in demeanour, like the little brother next to an unbeatable machine.
Tldr.
I'm glad, now that Lando has a car to challenge Max, he wastes no time challenging Max. Lando is super-talented, but driving next to Max, it sometimes becomes hard to recognize how good he is. They're also good friends. I worried that if and when Lando had the chance to challenge Max, he would struggle because of his nature and their friendship.
I am super happy that behind his cheeky smile, there lives a stone cold killer.
@MrCockroach70 I think Lando needed that boost by winning Miami, now he needs to seriously dig deep. Beating Max will be a feat, and I'm all for seeing this battle
Max was flawless yes.
Norris in the other hand was fully sending it and using 100% of the tyres in dirty air, in a hot track. I just don’t think there was any other option than turn everything to the max and pray to catch the one that’s ahead
Hot take: I’m not a verstappen fan but this win actually felt earned cause he had to fight for it and he seemed happier on the team radio as well so if he does continue to win most of the races it should be something like this
I really really like Alex as a guest. He isn't scared of disagreeing. Matt and Tommy tend to agree with each other a lot. Which isn't a bad thing, by no means. But hearing someone with that level of expertise not just agreeing silently with everything was a nice twist. And you can't get much closer to the race than with Alex, those vibes are simply different than listening to two fans (really knowledgeable ones tho)
I mean it's true that the updates Aston Martin brought in last season also didn't improve their overall performance, but rather brought Stroll and Alonso a lot closer together over the course of the season. The better they understand their car and the more stable to drive they make it, the more it seems to suit Stroll rather than Alonso. It's the opposite effect to Red Bull's last few years, where their upgrades have always widened the gap between Max and Checo.
Considering that Alonso is supposed to be their number 1 driver then I feel their car development hasn't really been reflecting that.
Alex’s positivity is a breath of fresh air 😂 love having him on and would be curious to see the dynamic with all three lads in for a podcast. See yous next week!
Having Alex here this weekend confirms I watch this channel for the chemistry of BOTH Matt and Tommy!

Ah man I like Alex (and F1TV team), kuddos for having him. I only listen via F1TV and I don't listen to the SkySports feed.
Why is no one talking about Yuki's amazing overtake on Logan into Tamburello? It was so clean!
Cos it was Logan.
Passing Sergeant is like passing the dead lizard (rip) at Singapore
Because it's like a turtle passing a snail. Yuki and Danny are an embarrassment to Redbull.
But if it would have been Lance 😬
Who you overtake is just as important.
Going back to Japan Lance had a lot of slick overtakes in the S’s, but them being mostly slower cars had it overlooked even though it’s probably the most technical part of the track.
I love coming here to read the comments. Some people (like myself at times) are obsessed with reading comments. For example, you find yourself reading this comment right now, which does not contain any useful information, only curiosity, that drives you to waste your time. Have a good day.

I’m curious to see how the dynamic of Piastri and Lando changes as the McLaren catches up to the Red Bull and they start fighting for wins.
From what I’ve seen, Piastri is a pretty straightforward guy. He doesn’t seem to joke around as much as the other drivers, and I don’t think for a second he wouldn’t put himself ahead of the team and fight Lando if he knows he’s faster.
its nonsense how they claim Piastri couldnt have done what Lando did. Was quicker all weekend and outqualified Lando. He was unlucky he was blocked half of the race by Sainz.
@@daarom3472He out qualified him by less than 2 hundredths with a tow, and can't manage tires nearly as well. No shot.
@@Vislow No shot! What are you talking about? Piastri cooked his mediums behind Sainz. Also lost 4-5 seconds in that stint alone to the top 3. He also had to push on his hards early to clear Sainz and almost cleared Leclerc! If he started on the front row he could’ve managed his pace better. Imola is notorious for lack of overtaking. So Piastri would’ve kept most cars behind if he was in front in the opening sequences of that race. Yes Lando still has an edge with tyre management. Main reason for that is experience. However to say that Piastri couldn’t have done what Lando did is absurd! Piastri in my opinion would’ve stayed closer to Max in that opening stint then Lando did. He also would’ve made Max uncomfortable in that opening stint, much like he did in Miami. That’s where Max won the race! Lando let him build to much of a gap in that opening stint. Lando is clearly better on the Hard tyre, Piastri is learning and learning fast. Next year will be interesting to see the dynamic when Piastri is pushing Lando from the start of the season! That’s if Mclaren lets them race and doesn’t make it a team orders season for Piastri.
@@JohnnyB930 100% certain as soon as Oscar gets on top of tyre degradation he will be pushing Norris and McLaren will start issuing team orders for him not to upset or pass Norris…. Lando is the chosen one!
@@DiscoStu65-sj6pu it’s bound to happen. If it does, I hope Piastri takes his talents else where if that point arrives.
Tommy should get the point for biggest good surprise with K Mag. Watch the last 15 laps or so of that race and just monitor the timing. Yuki, Hulk and Daniel were all doing similar pace and K Mag was closing on them at about a second per lap after passing both Saubers and Ocon. He passed Daniel pretty much as soon as he caught him and probably would have got the last point given another lap or two.
Great Show
I genuinely love Alex in commentary and on the podcast. when Crofty retires one day, I hope Alex gets the call up.
Max having a black and white flag for track limits was the icing on the cake too! Last 8 laps were very exciting!
I'm genuinely surprised Alex has time to do stuff like this, he should be a guest more often! Maybe an episode providing insight on how he became an F1 commentator, or even tips on how to get into it in general?
Alex is the GOAT of commentary 👍
People unhappy about boring races need to campaign for K Mag to get extra licence points.
I'm happy to say that I was there for 2023, and that I saw an imperious Max Verstappen hand down one of the greatest, most dominant seasons in any sport of all time. I witnessed history being written.
And I'm happy in 2024 someone is finally going to challenge him.

Bring back refueling. Problemn solved.
if the pitlane is shorter/higher speed/better shortcut then a two stopper also becomes more liekly. instead of forcing it or changing the track itself. 35s lost is kinda insane
I disagree with you, Tommy definitely deserves the point for KMag cause he came out of the previous 2 hell races with all those bad points and fingers pointing at him that he is a lunatic and doesn't know how to drive or keep his temper, and proved them all wrong at Imola one of the most difficult old school tracks in the calendar when Perez driving a top class car could not overtake Tsunoda at some point, (no offence to Yuki he did another great race result), he was passing everyone in front of him in places where noone else did! He even caught Hulkenberg that started 10th and he started 8 places behind!
If it wasn't for Norris catching Max at the end I think KMag's overtakes were the most interesting events
of that race.
If, if, if, but Oscar starting P2 would have given McLaren the option to pit early for the undercut and get Max on the hard tire. That’s the attention to detail they need to convert wins more often.
So why Piastri didnt overtake SAINZ and stucķ behind him only to finish ahead of him because of pit stop lol
Entertainment gold cheers to you both .
Podium in our home race. Nice! 👏👏👏 Now full focus on the Monaco GP weekend. It's such a historic track and there's always a special atmosphere. Hopefully we can get a great result this year. Avanti ragazzi! 💪 Forza Charles and Carlos! You got this ❤🙏🏻
We keep seeing mandatory pitstop suggestions but never what I would personally prefer. "You must use all dry compounds in a dry race. It gives more tyre offset racing, mind games for track position, and the drivers are more likely to always push.
I like the idea of forcing the teams to use all 3 types of tyre (you guarantee there will be at least 2 stops, and some cars would have better/worse performance with different tyres)
But then they'll whine that every lap will be like qualifying as they did in Qatar 2023.
We all mean drivers championship when we ask "Championship back on?" BUT:
Is the Constructors championship back on? Because Piastri is faster than Perez
If Checo drives like crap, oh yeah, the Constructor is back on
Don’t Forget ferrari
Or what about now Mclaren is better than Red bull
Also Piastri is that faster Mclaren is barely ahead of Russell Mercedes in the standing
have to remember red bull had a horror weekend and still won. they basically had no race sims for tyre data and it was a complete guess and until the hards were no good they were 0.2-0.3s ahead with a bad weekend. imagine when they dial in a bit more and figure out what the tyre issue is, teams will be a while off on most tracks still but for sure some tracks will be closer
Fr mate. People forgot how dominant was Max nd RB in China lol
Bring back refueling!
Thank you Alex, you're a greater Tommy than Tommy
Rain potentially due for Saturday in Monaco 👀👀
Alex is my favourite commentator
He even brings some juice to an otherwise boring race
I’ve enjoyed P1 with Matt and Alex. It’s like a post F1TV chat with the boys.
still love you, Tommy!
Probably should think this idea through: What about bringing softer compounds and ditch the 2-compound rule? Mediums today normally barely last half a race, imagine that those are the Hard option now? One stop guaranteed and i think different strategies because each team has a favored compound.
Tommy to replace Crofty, Alex to P1...perfect!
Finally, some new opinions and no bs fanboy Leclerc ideas
I look forward to seeing how the austiran gp goes tbh.
On Tyres, making them use all 3 compounds in the race, mix it up a bit and could have some real pace differences between those on hards and those on softs.
Max and his sponsers were just a bit frustrated not beeing on camera in the last few races...His new challenge is to win with less than a second in the last round ( not risking DRS..) , and giving Lando/McLaren hope.... Executed perfectly this round.
Alex is amazing! How about giving a ft. Alex on the pod title too?
20:50 *ASTROLL MARTIN
Quite impressive that you can get Alex to do this. He may be pricey, but you do take great care of your brand. Big respect.
I think they could widen the track and it would probably make a lot of difference
I think in Monaco they will be a surprise driver in the top 3 or something like a sauber or something
With regards to the number of stops, Should teams be made to use all 3 tyre compounds in a race? By doing so, the race will get more strategic with different compounds.
Well, it will make pit stops even more important
RIP Sabre
Hey, Matt. You asked if there was rain at any point during the weekend, on or off a session. Just so you know, it WAS raining on Thursday, which is media day and an official part of the weekend. You can see it during the F1 Weekend Warmup show.
Where do I find the driver ratings from Imola
Time to bring back re-fueling, surely they can make it safe.. Another way to get 2 stop races and lighter more nimble machinery
Make them use all three dry tyres in a dry race - easy to implement and will cost nothing as tyres are scrapped after the race.
I'd like to see some minor Imola changes;
- tighten the entry to Tamburello chicane, and
- bin off the Villeneuve chicane (which will also mean reprofiling the straight leading up to Tosa, moving it slightly left).
This creates two good overtaking opportunities, instead of one ok-good one, and two non-opportunities (all things being equal)
I though Tsunodas overtake was good too, it was an actual overtake, not a DRS on a straight drag race.
I disagree entirely that lando needed more laps. He had it right untill he had that bit of oversteer on lap 62 that lost him enough time to fall out of drs range. If he didnt lose the car that moment he would have spent the final lap battling max.
VCARB's biggest problem was Hulkenberg getting ahead at the start not getting held up in traffic they lost about 7 seconds in traffic and were 20 seconds behind Stroll at the end. Without losing places at the start they could have run the race at their own pace free to make their first stop much later ensuring they maximised the mediums and not allowing Stroll to build up a huge tyre advantage. However they did make a big error in pitting both cars within a lap of each other. They should have split the strategy to undercut Hulk and force Haas to make a decision to cover one car or the other. Instead they pitted both and opened the door for Stroll to go and run his own race without anyone there to slow him down.
To everyone saying that lando will be a championship contender this year is delusional. The biggest point deficit that has been turned over is 46 points in 2022 by max Verstappen to Charles leclerc. If anyone is going to have a chance at challenging max, it is Charles since he is only 48 points behind. Lando is 60 points behind. Charles has also been consistent so that is a maybe but it’s also not very likely. We will have to wait till next year. Additionally, Imola is a good track for McLaren and Norris and a less greater track for Ferrari. I would wait to see how to judge where Ferrari is. We will know around Barcelona and Canada. And teams will most likely be strongest at different tracks depending on weather and track characteristics. I’m not sure how great Ferrari will be in Monaco as I don’t think slow corners are their strength this year, but I might have to eat my words. We will see
All it takes is a couple dnfs. If Ferrari and McLaren are indeed catching up with red bull then there are more chances of collisions of power unit failures due to turning the engine up
@@azure89 I 100% agree. If Ferrari and McLaren and RedBull are all fighting for wins than drivers are more prone to mistakes and could crash then dnf. Or reliability issues but I really doubt that as the top teams have been very strong besides RedBull in Australia. If we see, more brake problems for RedBull than it could be a possibility. If Charles won Monaco and max dnfed, Charles would be 23 points behind max at 138 points. I just think with the current reliability it’s very unlikely. We can hope though
Australia might prove to be a very important race
Alex is awesome.
Lando's shrewd, he's never called anyone his grid mates his best friend, for the exact reason you've mentioned here!
However, he is definatly closer to a couple of the drivers than he'll care to admit to himself because I think it would upset him if they ever fall out because of racing - That said, Lando will not let this stop him taking any of them in a fight!
Matt used to be the commentator for F1TV?!? WHEN?!
He wasn't the main commentator, but when he was with WTF1, he filled in as a color commentator a few times in 2021, the one I remember is Austria
Yeah, he also did a bit of F2 commentator as a co-comm
The second Lando got into Verstappens dirty air it was over. He was sliding though every corner, over track limits about 20 times in the final 10 laps and was very very lucky to not get a penalty.
Alex is 🐐🔥
Yes, I don't need to see those Drs overtakes Bonanza anymore. I loved this race!
Matt the GOAT
In general, VCARB's strategy for both drivers (but especially Ricciardo) has been pretty awful. Obviously 20pts at this point is good for them but they could have double that if they'd done normal strategy
Alex and Alex Brundle would be a brilliant new commentary team for SkyF1.
I don't want drivers taking 3 years to learn how to "manipulate Pirelli rubber". I want the the drivers to strap tyres on and race hard. Tyres shouldn't dictate race outcomes.
Right. Just have one tyre like they used to before, no soft, medium, hard bs.
I think the technical aspect is what makes formula 1, “the pinnacle of motorsport.” Without it, it’s either just a bunch of sprints, money motorsport, or indycar. 😂
I think those last 10 laps were Max taking it to the NEXT...level! The Psy Ops Game! In an effeort to get the fans to stop complaining about Max winning every weekend? Sandbag the last ten laps, so we think it was a real close nail bighter, when in fact Max had all the performance and then some to keep Lando or anyone else for that matter from ever getting close enough to even try a long-shot move. Psy Ops! 😉
We love some Alex on the pod! Come back any time and we’ll bench one of the plebs for you. 😂 jkjk
Wanna see the pace differential when be has no issues should be a good one
you saw some of it. 0.2-0.3 on the mediums per lap, red bull currently doesnt like the hard tyres same in miami im sure they will figure it out and back to normal
The front wing of the McLaren is very loose, that might be a FIA thing. Look the difference with the other cars when the jumpt the corners.
I was watching the weekend warm-up and there was rain. Does it count?
3:05 how many overtakes did we see during the race? 5 to 10 maybe
the end of the race was only interesting
Lando had no track limits, cause if he did he would have had 5 penalties.. He went over with whole car 1-2 times pr lap when he gained hard on Max.. Take a look guys, 2 last turns
Jacques>crofty
If Matt is smart, he'll put the biggest flop for Monaco on Leclerc, because the streak of doom is long overstretched and has to backfire at some point, shirley....
