Thanks for watching!
This is my favorite piece of Tested content ever. Since Mythbusters is going away, this idea seems perfect replacement, to showcase places that get education right.
Totally agree this is so great!
Interesting approach to teaching.
If I had Mr.Blackwell as a math teacher when I was young I would probably understand a lot more math today, good to see some teachers are breaking the mould.
+punkbloater "mould"
I spy British English... in before someone says that's just the real English because "we invented it" and I don't have to patience to explain why that is shortsighted and fuck-tarded. Later.
That teaching style is amazing. I hope other teachers adopt it.
People seem to forget that almost everything we interact with on a daily basis is DESIGNED in some way. Someone had to apply some level of artistic ability/design to make the products and services we interact with usable. Love this initiative!
+Sean Leach Only idiots don't see the connection between art/creativity and STEM. Putting the A in the acronym just makes it more visible and, in some cases such as this, makes these fields more accessible by breaking down barriers and/or preconceptions.
Really wish this was longer. Thanks for the inspirational ideas and interesting concepts. My biggest problem with math as a kid was that I loved it but the math teachers themselves would discourage us with stuff like: "I know you all hate math but..." So glad that they're tying passion to math. Math becomes more and more fun the more it is applicable imo.
What a fantastic institution!! 'Make Music Count' is an inspired idea!!......got me thinking........'The Adam Savage Institute for Creative Arts'....a 'SF' based special FX, and model making school.....you have to admit, it does have a ring to it.......I think it would do well :)
That music & math approach is AWESOME!
Holy crap! That's a great initiative! o.0 And it seems alot better and more fun than the school i went to...
Plus it's always nice to see arts classes and definitely music become more popular as an education path then for example the more mainstream science classes.
Artesius is such a great-sounding name!
Wow this is an incredible video. Good job Tested and Adam, I look forward to seeing what the rest of this tour has in store in terms of videos like this!
So courageous and creative, both of you Artesius and Marcus. Thank you SO much for doing what you do!!!
Going to see Adam and Jamie live on Wednesday. So excited
I am not sure why there are 38 dislikes....:/. It was refreshing to see both arts and science go hand in hand and I loved seeing how music and math worked together. Thanks for sharing this Adam.
We need something like this in new york state. In general, education is so stressful because of the state standards that a new perspective would not only be welcome from the students / teachers point of view, it would be refreshing.
I want to go there. Although I might be a little out of place, having auburn hair... and also 21... and also white. I don't care I am going to school there.
+Dungeon Blaster why they all black ?! i don't understand because am not from America , is it about racism or what ?
+MrNnmmss He'd just feel out of place, it's a subconscious thing and its pretty horrible but we all sorta have it
i wouldnt feel out of place i mean just i would stand out. And I think he doesnt understand that there are neighborhoods in america that are mostly one ethnicity over another. It is a problem I think because division between people leads to bad things. I want to go to that school and i only brought race into it as a joke noticing i would be the only white one there, it would not bother me I dont think. Its an awesome school for any an all children. also i am too old to go to that school.
+MrNnmmss Its georgia.
Oh I know all about Steam. You think you're getting a great deal during those sales. Then you look through your library a year later and 65% of it has "0 minutes played."
Loved this, bring art into the classroom to spark thought and discussion about math and science.
As a piano player who has synesthesia, I can vouch for the whole "applying synesthesia" thing. When I play music (especially if I memorize or go by ear), I think of anything from numbers, to colours, to shapes and images. It's fun stuff
This is totally awesome. I wish I would've had something like this available to me when I was younger.
This is awesome! And I'd love to see more from Adam in this documentary-ish format ('The Savage Report'?).
These are teachers that are innovating! I wish that there were more schools that encouraged their teachers to do things like this!
Context is in my opinion an important part of learning some like math. In high school, I excelled in Calculus because the teacher put the math into a context that interested me (rocketry and space travel). Later on in my early years in college, I ran into a major math block, and I look back on it and see, the teacher gave no context to the math, I had nothing to conceptualize to get that ah ha moment.
Love the change in how he teaches math. The Pythagoreans would have been proud.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the term 'STEM' introduced mostly to differentiate between it and the arts? I thought the idea was to encourage more people to go through the STEM route as opposed to some form of art or humanities which are already overflowing with graduates. Adding the 'A' to it seems to be just whitewashing the terms meaning.
Mhmm.
+SubTachyon Pretty much. Gotta include everyone these days though...
+ActuallyLiam I'm not saying there isn't merit to the arts, I'm just agreeing with the OP's sentiment
+ActuallyLiam Ah yes, Captain Pichard of the Enterchise
I wish more schools would make school fun so kids would want to succeed. Kids need more arts in school. It is inspiring to see teachers like this. I hope a change happens so my daughter can have classes like these. And bring back industrial arts to like auto shop and metal shop.
So awesome!
That's so funny that I see this now. I have been a professional musician in the past and I just had a "gift" that if I heard music I heard other parts that my hands in most cases just found (especially on guitar). Only the last few months having suffered a burn out I took time to analyse the maths and I was like: "ahhh!!! I get maths now too! If they'd only taught it like this in school!" Also I understand now why the combination of chords are how they are. Not just because I know which chords sounds good in what key just because this is what you culturally know innately but why it is that it sooths us.
And here is a guy pretty much doing just that in such a cool way!
SUPERB I LOVED IT.
That was fantastic! I love the implementation of music into other subjects.
This method for teaching is excellent. Everyone learns in different ways and we have applied this in a limited fashion to education already. What was missing that this school focuses on is finding and encouraging the individual student's interests in a topic. I love how the piano class show the mirroring of mathematics and music.
On a side note, having STEAM as the set of core subjects makes learning practical applications of subject matter, especially math, much easier. It also echos back the the idea of the Renaissance Man or classical Greek scholar. An individual that is well versed in a multitude of topics and possibly a expert in one or two of them. Although, these scholastic ideals would have also included basic athleticism too. Perhaps STEAM should have another A?
Thank you Adam I really enjoyed that.
I live in Atlanta, I wish I went to this school!
Look up vihart, the mathemuscician.
Yes! She is amazing!
I wish we had this when I was a kid cause I always wanted to be a guitarist
ended up being in computer science (1st year college) hahaha
Combining math and music is GENIUS!! I would've LOVED to learn math this way instead of the discouraging, very boring; "read the text book and copy what it says"-style.
thanks for promoting STEAM education! the government jumped the gun on stem ed, the arts are just as important as science and math.
+Rahul Kochar Do the arts pay? Do the arts help feed people? Maybe I'm missing the justification, but it doesn't seem that related. I can see maybe that the arts might be important, but I don't get why they need bundled with STEM at least in all cases. Honestly it sounds like the math as instruments thing would probably just confuse me if I was asked to do algebra with it.
+space Well you might, but people with problems understanding the fundament of math might get insight throught this. And then they can learn "regular" math when they understand the fundaments of how math works.
***** um I don't know what your asking me lol all I meant was that STEAM is better because it includes all people and subjects since not everyone's brain is wired for science and math. Including arts doesn't mean making people do math while they draw or sing. I actually mean the arts. What if a kid wants to be a dancer or actor? You can't force STEM on a person who doesn't want or understand it.
I am not biased or anything, I'm a hardware engineer and can't sing or play an instrument or draw to save my life. But I do understand that there are people out there that are complete opposite from me, they don't contemplate physics or chemistry but have the ability to be incredible artists and I believe forcing JUST stem on the population is a negative path for education. And arts include a wide range of subjects, literature, history, music, art, social studies, entertainment and so on. My original statement had nothing to do with financial outcomes of education. Ofcourse in this day and age, you'll make better money in a technical field but im thinking about the people who want to pursue the arts for themselves. Creativity can't be taken away from students and replaced by a militaristic form of education.
All I ask is that people add one letter to stem and make it steam.
I just want kids to have every option available to them.
Apple iMacs - That must be a good school! :)
This is such a great way of learning, it will really produce Bright pupils.
playing that 2 chainz song screams atlanta
As a white person, I think black people intuit music better (it might be the church influence) than white people, or maybe it's just that music is found more in the home. The opposite may be true for math. So I think this is a great cross cultural opportunity and the potential for us all (black and white people) to get along is HUGE. Thanks Adam and as a teacher, in mostly black Oakland, I'm very excited about the Academy. I wish we had that here. Sorry if I have offended anyone with my lack of subtlety.
Make Music Count!
This was interesting, more in depth stuff of this nature would be enjoyable
Make sure you check out the FIRST programs held all over the country
Wow! What a young guy to start a school.
that is an absolutely awesome way to teach kids math!
3 people thumbs this shit down? wow... please give your heads a shake!
Hey Tested, you should allow customization of subtitles on your videos. I wanted to show this to my family, but they can't understand everything they say... if you allow them on youtube, I think a lot of people will be very grateful.
I wish I could have gone to that school!
3:34 Holy crap I think you just taught me piano in 3 seconds!
Artesius, what an epic name!
This is really great. Kids are the future.
My college just opened a STEM centre, I study software development but we don't have access to the new technology and computers; it annoys me so much.
Cause not black
Haha
awesome stuff
Yes! The Arts have to be included! STEAM ftw!
Wish my school was this awesome. :)
amazing school! ;D
HAH anyone else notice the kids music book at 4:18, the song is no flex zone by rae sremmurd
GENIUS he made algebra worthwhile lol.
very cool way to teach math!
New to tested and just a little confused. I thought Will and Norm were tested, noticed it says Adam Savages Tested. Did Adam take over tested? was it his all along? Did adam buy them out and now running it? Just curios about how it all came about.
+John Norris Forgive the lengthy essay :)
Tested was founded by Will and Norm in 2010. At the time, they were part of a company called Whiskey Media alongside a few other sites including Giant Bomb and Comic Vine. These sites all shared an office and the site had a lot of "friends of Tested" appear in videos and podcasts, most prominently screenwriter Gary Whitta.
In 2012, Whiskey Media split up, and while most of the other sites were acquired by CBS Interactive, Tested was acquired by BermanBraun, an LA production company.
Previously, BermanBraun had worked with Adam and Jamie's production company on a tv-show called Unchained Reaction and a few other projects.
Now they hired Adam and Jamie to boost Tested's profile. The site was subsequently relaunched as "Adam and Jamie's Tested", although given the Mythbusters' busy Mythbusting schedule the bulk of the content was made by the full-time team Will, Norm and Joey.
Adam quickly became a regular, and Jamie would show up a few times each year, showing off something extremely dangerous and impressively over-engineered. :p
About a month ago, Will left Tested to focus on a new virtual reality startup, and around the same time it became clear that Mythbusters' next season would be the last. Adam stated he would move a lot of his focus to Tested, where he'd be able to try new ideas and pursue his interests. Jamie stated he would be focusing on other projects, mainly product development, and that he was probably done being an on-screen personality.
The site began using "Adam Savage's Tested" a few days ago, so it seems Jamie is officially out. Adam will probably be appearing a lot more, and it seems we'll be seeing the regular contributors like Jeremy Williams, Sean Charlesworth, Frank Ippolito, Patrick Norton and Kishore Hari appearing more often.
in their last year their learn of to calculate jazz progressions.
"So kids, how would you resolve a C m#7 ?
*Reading the title*
OH SHIET GABEN GOES UNDERCOVER BOSS!
why are there only black people on thay school? have I missed something?
+EvilisMe cause thats all Atlanta GA is
.
+EvilisMe has to be the dumbest question here
+DrunkenMadman actually i am also confused
+EvilisMe B/c that's the composition of the district the school services. Clayton is a majority black county. This school was made by that community for that community.
Marcel Jones nothing to be confused about. we dont force white people not to go...they chose to separate themselves
adam savage your the real MVP
Came here expecting high level Valve executives. Got cool video about STEAM education instead. 10/10 would pray to Gaben again.
Math piano, frikkin brilliant!
that's really cool!!!
4:19 math with Rae Sremmurd - No Flex Zone
Waou thats so good
When the hell did art start piggy backing on stem? One of these things is not like the others.
what is the difference between steam and education?
it is inspiring
It's nice and all but I hope that they learn a bit more than how to do additions... It doesn't strike me as being an "alternative" for typical maths classes where dealing with abstract concepts is the whole point.
all the smiling faces of kids learning
Under Tested is: it's missing Will
+Randomtvusa will left tested a little while ago
O. I didn't know that. Thanks
+Randomtvusa He is now focusing on getting his Virtual Reality startup off the ground, so he left his role at Tested, but he'll still be a regular cast-member on Still Untitled.
Are they not scared to linking music with maths too much? Maths is useful far beyound the realms of music and you cannot explore even slightly complex ideas when your tied down to music.
Your lack of faith is disturbing. Jks. Nah music is incredibly complex depending on which kind you look at
Look up Penderecki: Threnody to the People of Hiroshima
+Timothy Alder They weren't looking at that type of music, seemed to more of the 4 chord progressions to me.
The point of the music though was to be simple to engage younger kids that were strongly against maths into doing basic sums. None of the kids seem to be learning advanced calculus or anything like that, they're younger children doing basic addition.
+stefanozurich Pretty sure this is just a stepping stone into the realm of mathematics. Introducing them to mathematics in a form they understand such as music (even if it is simple 4 chord progression) would be enough to entice them to pick up more complicated mathematical disciplines such as calculus in higher education. Frankly I think this a phenomenal idea for people who may be more akin to doing math not by visual means or by memorization but instead by hearing. One of the major pitfalls of education is the rather rigid teaching curriculum as in it often favors kids who's learning style is similar to that of the teachers curriculum leaving those who learn differently at a disadvantage. Having a option such as this would increase the education of kids whom would be at a disadvantage in a normal curriculum.
This is so cool
great
Yo where's Gabe
holy shit... his hair
Art SHOULD NOT be incorporated into STEM, art is not on par with the STEM fields, not even close.
+Phil Verhey I do not think art is above STEM... quite the opposite. I think art, while interesting and stimulating, is far less important than science, technology, engineering, and math. Grouping art with these infinitely more useful and significant pursuits insults and degrades these pursuits. There's a reason why artists "starve" and work at coffee shops, while engineers thrive and build the world of tomorrow.
+Phil Verhey I understood your comment as a result of your misunderstanding of mine. And I disagree with your proposition that art is as equally important as STEM. Art CAN be important, but I think it is largely over rated, often irrelevant, and mostly an enormous waste of time, energy, and resources. You're welcome to think otherwise, I really don't care.
Also, it's yin and yang, not "ying and yang".
Different, in a genius way!
Why is art in stem now?
i didnt know they spoke american in Ethiopia
Nice add
Not to be racist here but this video seems one sided, Its great that this exist but I feel it needs to be for all students opinion just based off the video
Hello mythbuster!
The only reason this works is because its not common core. Most of Georgia is CC and it feels pretty bad
These guys deserve a medal. Bugger off that Obama fool and make this genius president. #MakeTheWorldABetterPlace
I'm waiting for the steam sale. Also, art doesn't really fir into the same categories as science, technology, engineering and math.
Half Life 3 Confirmed
Thank you! The idea that the arts are meaningless, and a waste of money, is so frustrating.
I don't like these unconventional teaching methods. It seams like a distraction to the learning process and it can only work with a small percentage of children.
The music homework the kids are working on is incorrect and unconventional. It seems like someone who doesn't know music very well is developing music homework.
So um, not to detract from a good thing here but uh... Well, without digging myself a grave I'll put it this way first.
If you had a school, that seemed to have only white students and teachers and called it "Utopia", you'd have questions right?
I'm not saying that's what this is, but I could see some people thinking that, I'm not alone in that realization am I?
seems like there is only one white kid going to that school :D
Love STEM not STEAM. Too many Arts majors making technical decisions for our government. Leave STEM alone and start another arts program if you think we need it.
THIS
i dont like that school im in metro atl
woohoo second im such a dick
yeah no one racisct over there, only black tachers and students? what a wonderful school... someone had a similar idea about a century ago ... bloody racists
+firebladeflow The county is predominantly Black. It's no different than having a school populated mostly Asian students, Mexican students, or White students. It's all based on the neighborhood or city the school is based in.
sure ...
