  • Doctor O'Donovan explains which animals carry rabies, including dogs, bats, skunks, racoons, foxes & more.
We will also cover potential signs and symptoms that an animal might have rabies and how to try and prevent your own pets from getting rabies.
    CONTENT:
    00:00 Introduction
    01:01 Dogs
    02:30 Bats
    03:55 Racoons, Skunks, Foxes
    04:32 Cats
    05:24 Monkeys
    05:55 Livestock
06:47 How can I tell if an animal has rabies?
07:46 How can you prevent rabies?
    Summary of rabies:
    - It is a virus
    - It is usually fatal
    - On a global scale there are around 60,000 deaths from rabies each year, with 95% of human deaths occurring in Asia and Africa.
    What animals are affected?
Rabies primarily affects mammals which are warm-blooded animals with fur -- and technically any mammal can get rabies, including people.
In summary, the biggest risk globally for contracting rabies is by far and away from DOGS, in the USA bats, skunks, racoons and foxes carry significant rabies risk and these animals can infect domestic pets like dogs and cats or livestock - with the risk increasing if your pet is unvaccinated.
If you have any concerns or uncertainties following contact with an animal - especially if it has bitten you or an open wound or cut has been exposed then you should consult your health provider.
POSSIBLE CLUES AN ANIMAL MIGHT HAVE RABIES:
You can’t tell if an animal has rabies by just looking at it-the only way to know for sure if an animal has rabies is to perform testing in a lab, but possible clues might include:
    • general sickness
    • problems swallowing
    • excessive drool or saliva
    • an animal that is overly aggressive
    • an animal that bites at imaginary objects
    • a wild animal that appears tamer than you would normally expect
    • an animal that’s having trouble moving or may even be paralyzed - for example a bat that is on the ground
3 WAYS TO TRY PREVENT RABIES:
    1. First, make sure your pets get regular rabies vaccines.
    2. Always try keep pets away from wild animals.
    3. If you’ve noticed stray animals in your neighborhood call animal control to safely remove them - don’t try do it yourself.

Saw a rabid raccoon pup one day. It was staggering around at 2 o’clock. It looked drunk. Was gagging a lot. Tried lunging at us humans and fell into a creek and drowned. It was pretty sad

From numerous studies conducted on rabid dogs, cats, and ferrets, we know that when the rabies virus isintroduced into a muscle through a bite from another animal, it travels from the site of the bite to the brain by moving within nerves. The animal does not appear ill during this time.
The time between the bite and the appearance of symptoms is called the incubation period and it may last for weeks to months. A bite by the animal during the incubation period does not carry a risk of rabies because the virus has not yet made it to the saliva.

@@krasue29 The only way an animals is getting rabies is if it came into contact and was attacked by a rabid animal.
If you were bitten by a rabid animal; you basically have 36 hours to get the vaccination.
The likelihood that your animal was bitten by a rabid raccoon and then infected you is very very low; especially in any 1st world country.
Rabies mostly affects China, India, and Central Africa.

Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances, and it would be unethical of me to do so otherwise. I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. I thought that all birds were warm-blooded, but if it's not warm blooded, it can't be a mammal, that's kind of weird, is it because it lays eggs, I'm 40 I haven't been in school in years, I learned this in the first grade, but humans are born from eggs, just like boa r, you don't see the egg, but the water Sac break does before the boa against live birth, not of course I know a boa constrictor is not warm blooded, that's why I got a heating heating mat inside my tank,, so I thought the only difference was being warm-blooded and cold blooded animals, between mammals and nine mammals,, but orcas and seals are not call bloody, yet they live only in the ocean, and they're known to hunt in antarctica, and that's the only place that leopard seals will go to or live, (is what I meant to) say, the orcas only go there during breeding season for the seals, just like they are known to go to Iceland and the Arctic up in North pole, how is it that they can be in both frigid Waters, without without their temperature changing, they say that even in Winter times some of that our temperature stays the same, but that's not true because if we stayed if we went to go swim and Antarctica, we would die from hypothermia, in about 20 minutes or less, so how can a marine mammal, or any mammal live in those temperatures?🤔humm

@@Elgatos989people literally say that rabies can stay dormant for years. Longest so far.
“Based on the available evidence in this case of rabies encephalitis, the incubation period was tentatively considered to be 25 years from the time of dog bite”
Though incubation for years is rare it’s not unheard of.
“Eight years after being bitten by a dog, a 14-year-old was brought to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital with signs of hyperactivity, excitable behaviour, hydrophobia earlier this year. He tested positive for rabies, did not respond to therapy, and died at the hospital.”
However again, once again, rare. It’s usually a 2 month incubation period, maybe a year tops. But it definitely wouldn’t hurt for OP to just get checked out. Yes, it’s very likely waste money testing but it could be worth it OP was in a place where there’s a lot of stray dogs or something.
Frivolous as it sounds only 16 people though out the thousands of years of history with rabies has survived it. One of those people barely because it was too late to take the shot because they thought that a certain bat bite wasn’t big deal. They had to be in the medically induced coma to survive.

Rabies can't go through unbroken skin. People can get rabies only via a bite from a rabid animal or possibly through scratches, abrasions, open wounds or mucous membranes in contact with saliva or brain tissue from a rabid animal.

    • @anorthosite

Eyes and mucous membranes are also vulnerable paths to infection via saliva smears or droplets.
And many bat bite victims did not (while still lucid) recall having been bitten. Bat bite wounds may not be obvious due to their tiny teeth.

Sounds like maybe cat scratch fever. Can't help any more than that, but it is a real thing. Maybe Google it.

If vaccines are supposed to be the answer to solve viral infections, why don't we just vaccinate all mammals against the rabies virus and we should be able to eliminate rabies all together?
I mean, after all, wasn't that the logic we were told about the pandemic?

Because us humans need the vaccines ourself and iff u waste it all on mammals and iff people get rabies there wll basically be nothing to do.
