I see what you mean. However except people who were "rich" or photographing just for fun (like Vivian Maier for example) it is understandable they would accept assignments and even political ones because they needed to earn the money somehow. I still think it is an interesting look in the history even though it might have been influenced by politics.

A revisionist approach to photography would be an interesting approach, a lot of these famous photographers were very corrupted and often political.
