They call it blu ray because it uses an ultra violet laser to read the disc which allows there to be more pits to store data on as opposed to a DVD which uses infrared. As for why they don't just call it violet ray its probably because blu ray sounds better. Congrats if you read to the end of this you also have way too much free time on your hands.
