Exactly. The Mad Hatter area is my favorite, because he is my favorite rogue from TAS. However, it doesn't excuse that area and the game of being extremely difficult.
Comix Zone is one of my favorite games of ALL TIME! Although it is not as difficult as it seems, the secret is using Roadkill (the rat) on the right spots, so he finds you items that allow you to save health. But still, pretty respectable difficulty.
I found it really hard at first, less so when I got to know it well. Since potion locations are the same when you exit and re-enter an area, you can work out a plan for Chakan to do lots of alchemy. 1.) Start with the firey realm, and jump in the lava to save hourglass time when you've gained 2 Red Potions. 2.) Go into the watery realm anticipating getting hit and banished back out soon after gathering 3 Blue Potions and 1 Clear Potion. 3.) Go int the airy realm, use Jumping Boots, then set a Doorway on the sky-island with a Green and Clear potion. Then you can go back in and fill up on those by falling out deliberately to conserve hourglass time. 4.) In earthy realm, get the Axe as quickly as possible, so you can chop through doors in Dragonfly King's realm. 5). In airy realm's 3rd sector. get Doorway set by the 3 potions, Blue and Red and Clear. Then if you save Dragonfly King for last, you easily get most of the potions desirable for beating the other 3 bosses. But after the Terrestrial Plane, it gets harder, I admit.
Controls got better in later titles. Sonic 1 wasn't hard because of the levels, it was hard because controls were kinda messy. I still think Sonic 3 was the perfect title regarding difficulty and controls, so I never really liked the first one, because of its controls.
My biggest piece of advice in passing Contra: Hard Corps.? Play as Browny. Most bullets will miss him due to his short size, he's capable of doublejump, can reduce his descent AND has one of the most if not THE most OP weapon of all 4 characters: The friggin' yo-yo gun.
I used fang for the whole game every time. Browny is amazing yes. But if you want a challenge fang also has the flame punch and his charge weapon which does x2's more damage than the yo yo gun. hes a Tall toon so your going to have to be nimble and know the game.
Augustus Autumn Man what of loved about this game you can play as A freaking robot, A wolf, and badass male and female soldiers these where all Contra first. But each character had their own unique weapons that made them so amazing.

The problem with Sonic though is that everybody who had a Genesis owned it, and thus got dozens upon dozens of hours of practice in on it. In retrospect, the game feels a lot easier than it actually is, but that's only because everybody who grew up with it played it to the point of complete memorization.
Man Somic 3 is the hardest overall. Only reason I ever beat it was cuz of the save mode. But Sonic 2 (without Tails ) is probably the hardest of the first 3 IMO.
Really! Labyrinth Zone was ridiculously difficult! I tried so many times beating it, and wanted to give up until I finally beat it! Gosh, Sonic, do you have to make me rage?!
I remember when I was a kid, I rented Shadow of the Beast and returned it after spending 3 hrs on the first stage and not getting anywhere. I thought it was broken....turns out I was sort of right.

I definitely agree with Comix Zone, it seems every little thing you do just saps away at your life until it's all gone. However I don't think I can agree with Sonic the Hedgehog. Maybe it's just because I've played the game so much I have a photographic memory of the levels and how to beat them, but I think there were much harder games they could've chose instead like Kid Chameleon, The Ooze, or Sonic Spinball (though it's debatable whether or not it's fair difficulty).

Chakan, probably the hardest game of any console. It was not known it had no "ending" until emulators with save states were available. Sagaia was also more difficult than most of these.
You have OBVIOUSLY never played Batman & Robin for Genesis. I might agree with No. 1, but I at least finished it. Batman & Robin though I could never beat in 20 years, even in 2 player mode. This game is insane! Those monster aerial levels, shitloads of enemies, unbelievable. Is it even possible to beat it without cheating?

That aerial level... You fight lots of enemies, than you fight mini-boss, than another mini-boss, than there're 2 mini-bosses AT THE SAME TIME and than you have a big boss. You manage to beat it with your health blinking, restore few HP and - guess what? - THERE'RE MORE BOSSES ahead. And a final badass helicopter boss at the very end to make sure you do not progress any further.
Comix Zone was hard, i never made it far in the game. I am surprised Maximum Carnage wasn't on the list. i remember my brother making it to Carnage on the last level and dying.

Both 1 and 2 were hard. But if I had to weigh it. I'd say X men 1 was way harder......why....cause you didn't have all the cool characters. The controls in 1 were unforgiving. The levels....hell the first level was unforgivable. And that stupid as Rouge and Ice man summon doesn't do shit to the enemies you trying to obliterate on screen. And the fight against Magneto was itched with some painful memories.
As a kid I struggled with X-Men. If you play the game on normal difficulty you get a screenshot of Magneto halfway through the game telling you game over and forces you to restart on hero difficulty. Pissed me off.
Yeah, I also expected to see it on this list. This game not only is very hard. It's very hard from the get-go. Beating the very first level takes a lot of practice. And the flying stage is a total nightmare. One lost life means reduced weapon power, and you can't kill enemies fast enough to survive. Though this game was not only challenging, it was dynamic, fun and visually pleasing. And the soundtrack was one of Genesis' best.

nice list. As a kid I manage to beat eternal champions, I tried it recently and it kicked my balls. Aladdin is all about memorization, but it is not that hard. Revenge of Shinobi is actually very hard but I manage to beat it as well.
My top 3 as far as genesis goes: 1: Subterrania 2: Chakan The Forever Man 3: Kid Chameleon I never struggled with battle toads much. "X-Men and Spiderman" was a toughie too. But those 3 i mentioned took me a long time to beat
X-Men for the SEGA Genesis should've been mentioned, I feel. As a kid, I don't think I ever made it past Deathbird (although it was awesome to see a lesser-known comic villain such as her in a video game).

Altered Beast is easy once you learn where the wolves come from. Until then, it's extremely hard. That said beat it once, you can beat it a hundred times. Beating it once is hard as balls though.
Sonic 1 is clearly the hardest in it's own original trilogy(quadrilogy?) but one of the hardest on the Genesis? That's questionable(still, Fuck Scrap Brain Zone, and the Final Boss!). Comix Zone gives me a few cool and sour memories when I played it on Sonic's Mega Collection.

After you've played it enough; it's possible to clock TF IV-on hardest, on a single credit. Did it many times after school. With that said, I lost count of the times I clocked Contra III on the SNES-on hard, yet playing it today, my friend and I working together [should be easier]; can't even clear stage 1...
You just scratched the surface regarding "Sonic:The Hedgehog" You just mentioned getting through the levels, but actually _winning_ the game involves getting all of the chaos emeralds which involves the dizzying bonus levels, but I watched my brother do it!

You couldn't die if you had rings, rings were everywhere, and if you got hit you had a generous amount of invincible time to collect the rings that were now all around you. Enemies barely moved. There were some bottomless pits but they were easy to avoid. You could drown in one level, but air bubbles were everywhere. Almost *every other* platformer on the system was harder. Sonic. The goddamn Hedgehog. Unbelievable.
I always thought the first X-Men game was incredibly hard. Once your character died, they were gone for good. Not to mention how long it takes for your mutant power gauge to refill!

Gouls n ghosts was pretty tough. Remember getting to the last level and then at the end instead of fighting the boss you started all over again... You needed a special weapon or something like that Altered Beast as a honorable mention? You're kidding right? That was one of the easiest games I've played on it.

Garius was the most impossible game on the Genesis. The only reason I ended up beating the game is because some kind of glitch occured when I paused to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, my ship was somehow invincible.
The most pain in the ass game I've ever played on the Genesis was Eternal Champions. Never once beat it. Most of the time I can't even get past the first fight.
Bloodlines over castlevania 4 any day 4 is a great game but bloodlines seemed to go back to the vania roots plus for a genesis game it looks incredibly amazing, truly talented developers
Video bought up some very bad Memories from when I was a kid... Of the games mentioned, the ones I've completed are: Aladdin Sonic 1 (With All Chaos Emeralds) Comix Zone (I never want to do it again) Spiderman vs The King Pin is another VERY HARD game on the Sega Genesis I think you guys missed. Not only do you have to fight and deal with level enemies and Spiderman villains, you also have to take pictures of them so you have enough money to buy more web fluid. On top of THAT, the game runs on a time limit. You have to defeat all the bosses, get to the end, do a boss rush of all the bosses without dying, turn off the bomb once they're all gone with the key cards you acquired from all the bosses, THEN YOU HAVE TO SAVE MARY JANE FROM THE KING PIN as she's slowly lowered into a vat of (what I guess is) Acid. King Pin's only weak spot is his head, which is VERY HARD TO HIT with your jump kick move. My brother managed to beat it ahead of me, and I did it after, but then the game froze on me when Spidey and Mary hugged. I know I beat it and I saw the ending so I didn't care much, but it was a real sting to all the effort I put in to beat the game.
Dynamite Headdy was brutally difficult for a lot of kids back in the day (including myself) Also, Streets of Rage 2 is pretty hard and throws a lot of bullshit at you with certain boss fights
I have to say I'm glad someone finally fucking said more about Ecco the Dolphin than "you're a dolphin, you swim around, it's hard." Ecco and, even more-so, it's sequel are two of my favorite games ever. Story, soundtrack, and atmosphere. I wasn't surprised Contra made #1. I can currently get about half way through the game. It's exhausting but a blast. It's one of those games that you can't blink while playing, so your eyes start to burn, haha.
Alladin? I got that game as a birthday present when I turned 8 or 9 (can't recall) and beat it in the first day... Sonic was my first game, it took me about a month to finish when I was 4. Phantasy Star 2, Chakan, Batman & Robin & Kid Chameleon. Those were the most challenging to beat from what I've played.
I have to disagree with Sonic and Aladdin as I finished them both many times, but I was glad to see Ecco the Dolphin. That game drove me nuts, and I was never able to find anyone else who finished it.

Thomas Patterson I loved the different paths. I don't recall any other Contra doing that except for Hard Corps on the PS3/360

I might agree with No. 1, but I at least finished it. Batman & Robin though I could never beat in 20 years, even in 2 player mode. This game is insane! Those monster aerial levels, shitloads of enemies, unbelievable. Is it even possible to beat it without cheating?

You fight lots of enemies, than you fight mini-boss, than another mini-boss, than there're 2 mini-bosses AT THE SAME TIME and than you have a big boss.
You manage to beat it with your health blinking, restore few HP and - guess what? - THERE'RE MORE BOSSES ahead. And a final badass helicopter boss at the very end to make sure you do not progress any further.
Comix Zone was hard, i never made it far in the game. I am surprised Maximum Carnage wasn't on the list. i remember my brother making it to Carnage on the last level and dying.

The fact that Sonic is on the list and that Strider and Altered Beast are honourable mentions makes it clear that this list is derivative - based more on quick views of other videos/reviews than actual experience with a wide variety of games. What a joke.
With the exception of the final two worlds, the first Sonic game wasn't very difficult. I would've replaced #6 with Vectorman or Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar heroes had infinite continues from what I remember.
Gunstar is not that difficult, its just a bit long. It took me a few days to complete.

Honestly I think the second game is harder. Only because I beat the first game and not the second..
Both 1 and 2 were hard. But if I had to weigh it. I'd say X men 1 was way harder......why....cause you didn't have all the cool characters. The controls in 1 were unforgiving. The levels....hell the first level was unforgivable. And that stupid as Rouge and Ice man summon doesn't do shit to the enemies you trying to obliterate on screen. And the fight against Magneto was itched with some painful memories.
Chakan the forever man is the hardest game I remembered playing, and Ecco the dolphin is easily the hardest and most confusing on this list
As a kid I struggled with X-Men. If you play the game on normal difficulty you get a screenshot of Magneto halfway through the game telling you game over and forces you to restart on hero difficulty. Pissed me off.
The adventures of batman and robin is a contra like game.... and very hard

This game not only is very hard. It's very hard from the get-go.
Beating the very first level takes a lot of practice.
And the flying stage is a total nightmare. One lost life means reduced weapon power, and you can't kill enemies fast enough to survive.
Though this game was not only challenging, it was dynamic, fun and visually pleasing. And the soundtrack was one of Genesis' best.

nice list. As a kid I manage to beat eternal champions, I tried it recently and it kicked my balls. Aladdin is all about memorization, but it is not that hard. Revenge of Shinobi is actually very hard but I manage to beat it as well.

Sonic 1 is clearly the hardest in it's own original trilogy(quadrilogy?) but one of the hardest on the Genesis? That's questionable(still, Fuck Scrap Brain Zone, and the Final Boss!). Comix Zone gives me a few cool and sour memories when I played it on Sonic's Mega Collection.

With that said, I lost count of the times I clocked Contra III on the SNES-on hard, yet playing it today, my friend and I working together [should be easier]; can't even clear stage 1...

Have you gone *insane*? There was almost *no* challenge in that game. None at all. You couldn't die if you had rings, rings were everywhere, and if you got hit you had a generous amount of invincible time to collect the rings that were now all around you. Enemies barely moved. There were some bottomless pits but they were easy to avoid. You could drown in one level, but air bubbles were everywhere.
Almost *every other* platformer on the system was harder.

I always thought the first X-Men game was incredibly hard. Once your character died, they were gone for good. Not to mention how long it takes for your mutant power gauge to refill!

Garius was the most impossible game on the Genesis. The only reason I ended up beating the game is because some kind of glitch occured when I paused to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, my ship was somehow invincible.

The most pain in the ass game I've ever played on the Genesis was Eternal Champions. Never once beat it. Most of the time I can't even get past the first fight.
Bloodlines over castlevania 4 any day 4 is a great game but bloodlines seemed to go back to the vania roots plus for a genesis game it looks incredibly amazing, truly talented developers

Spiderman vs The King Pin is another VERY HARD game on the Sega Genesis I think you guys missed. Not only do you have to fight and deal with level enemies and Spiderman villains, you also have to take pictures of them so you have enough money to buy more web fluid. On top of THAT, the game runs on a time limit. You have to defeat all the bosses, get to the end, do a boss rush of all the bosses without dying, turn off the bomb once they're all gone with the key cards you acquired from all the bosses, THEN YOU HAVE TO SAVE MARY JANE FROM THE KING PIN as she's slowly lowered into a vat of (what I guess is) Acid. King Pin's only weak spot is his head, which is VERY HARD TO HIT with your jump kick move.
My brother managed to beat it ahead of me, and I did it after, but then the game froze on me when Spidey and Mary hugged. I know I beat it and I saw the ending so I didn't care much, but it was a real sting to all the effort I put in to beat the game.

Comix zone was actually pretty hard even nowadays. I still had a hard time trying to beat it in "Sonics UGC" especially the mountain level and more
Dynamite Headdy was brutally difficult for a lot of kids back in the day (including myself)
Also, Streets of Rage 2 is pretty hard and throws a lot of bullshit at you with certain boss fights

I have to say I'm glad someone finally fucking said more about Ecco the Dolphin than "you're a dolphin, you swim around, it's hard." Ecco and, even more-so, it's sequel are two of my favorite games ever. Story, soundtrack, and atmosphere. I wasn't surprised Contra made #1. I can currently get about half way through the game. It's exhausting but a blast. It's one of those games that you can't blink while playing, so your eyes start to burn, haha.
Alladin? I got that game as a birthday present when I turned 8 or 9 (can't recall) and beat it in the first day... Sonic was my first game, it took me about a month to finish when I was 4.
Phantasy Star 2, Chakan, Batman & Robin & Kid Chameleon. Those were the most challenging to beat from what I've played.
I have to disagree with Sonic and Aladdin as I finished them both many times, but I was glad to see Ecco the Dolphin. That game drove me nuts, and I was never able to find anyone else who finished it.
