    I have the HP Spectre X2, the previous version. It's the best computer I've had. I'm a university student, and it is my main computer. I watch a ton of korean dramas, RUclips, stream a lot of shows online; and I've never had a problem. It has excellent battery life and display. The only cons I have are the difficulty in purchasing cases and the quality of the speaker.

    I'd be seduced by the Surface Pro being objectively better on most points, but doubt I'd find much difference between them in use. HP are a revision away from making something as good as MS - and I think they're all development changes that shouldn't (ha!) increase the cost - smarter cooling (which will likely improve battery life), better pad and pen - both these mainly software limited. Great reviews as ever.

  • @gyozakeynsianism

    Great video. One thing I would add is that more external battery packs should work with the HP Spectre x2 than the Surface, since the Spectre uses USB-C charging and it's a simple matter of a charge-carrying adapter to get your old micro-USB power pack to charge the Spectre (assuming that does work ...). The Surface, on the other hand, would require a purpose-built external battery with Surface Connect, which would cost you.
    Another issue is backlight bleed. Every single Surface Pro 2017 I've seen - including every display model at the local Microsoft Store and in places like Best Buy, in reviews such as your own, and in the device I eventually bought (i5/4GB/128), there is a bright band of light at the bottom of the screen. It's quite noticeable with bright, uniform colors, like when you hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This is very clearly a manufacturing flaw. I may have to return it - I see it every day in OneNote and it's becoming an eyesore.

    • @ghazi1175
      @ghazi1175 7 лет назад +1

      gyozakeynsianism Thank you for that. I returned my SP4 before because of the bleed and for what I'm reading the same or worse is happening with the SP. That's reason enough to pick the Spectre X2. I'll have to see it in BestBuy

    Another big deal breaker for me was no USB-A on the HP. Still trying to decide between the HP Spectre x360 and new Surface Pro. Leaning toward Pro though. Lisa, do you think we could get an updated Spectre x360 vs. Surface Pro smackdown? :) As always, thanks for the great video!!

  • @worthless_opinion

    So the Surface has an i5 with no fan, that performs comparably to the Spectre's i7 with fan, yet actually runs cooler? Lol, that's some shitty engineering from HP. Or some spectacular engineering from MS.

  • @dennisbrandenburg6412
    @dennisbrandenburg6412 7 лет назад

    Lisa, very good comparison between the two. Not an artist but I am a photographer and the difference between the i7's was surprising. Enough that I need to rethink the HP. You need to do another video about USB-C/Thunderbolt in regard to these systems. At home connection is very important to me and I need to drive external displays, usb hdd, ext ssd, camera SD cards, bicycle computers, .... With the Surface Pro and Surface Book it is easy. Panos Panay comments about USB-C are correct USB-C, you need dongles, lots of dongles. Better would be a USB-C hub try finding a USB-C hub that has: two DP/HDMI video out, USB-3, 1Gbps ethernet, USB-C port out, USB-C pass through charging, SD card reader, etc, ... such a hub does not exist. This can now be done with a Surface Book and Dock.

    $800 dollar difference with i7, 16g ram, 512g ssd, with pen and keyboard. That's a HUGE difference. I'll take slightly less battery life and running a little warmer for $800 difference. (I use pen for notes and light drawing so pen difference doesn't matter to me much)

    • @Humilau
      @Humilau 7 лет назад +3

      little warmer is an understatement; the HP runs super hot and the fan noise is extremely audible. Also, you can use the Microsoft Surface Pen on the Spectre X2.

    • @josephmclord
      @josephmclord 7 лет назад +3

      You can try new 2017 spectre x360 too , won't lie it it better than x2 , it has full USB and 2 thunderbolt 3 , yeah ! And all included in the box with pen

    • @Jayy997
      @Jayy997 7 лет назад +1

      That's a big price difference. It's far less than that in some countries. It's also not just slightly less battery life vs Surface Pro - it's significant. The Spectre also has a much much worse touchpad and pen quality.

      Jay Y
      I would suggest you check out COSTCO. They are offering the new Pros in different configurations and all are much less expensive. They also include the type cover and pen in their prices. Costco includes an extra year warranty and if using their proprietary credit card, City Bank, they extend the warranty to guarantee to a full four years. They also have a service that will interact with the manufacturer so you don't have to. I've used it and it is a tremendous feature. The only drawback is you have to be a COSTCO member which cost $50.00 for a year. I'm not a COSTCO employee nor advisor. I'm a 68 year old fella who looks for the Best Buy for the buck. You may want to check out their different configurations for the HP Envy Ultrabook. It's custom made system and has many more features than the new Spectre Ultrabook. That includes a full TB of SSD , a screen that offers 3200 x 1800 resolution, comes with Microsoft Office full edition Windows 10 Pro and something you can't find on any other Ultrabook. They include three ( 3 ) USB 3.1 ports and one ( 1 ) USB C Port. I priced the configuration at the HP Store and it came to over $1900.00 while the COSTCO system is around $1200.00 with the 2K screen and $1300.00 for a 4 K. Might want to check out the other units they offer like the new Surface systems in different configurations.

    Hi, great review! I was wondering did you notice a performance difference between the Intel 8265 wireless card in the spectre and the avastar in the SP? Also I notice you said around 8 hours of battery life for the SP i5. Did you get around 8 with the SP i7 as well?

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  7 лет назад +2

      Marvell Avastar used to be a weak point for the Surface line, but in this generation it's been working as well as the intel 8265. The Core i7 gets around 20 minutes shorter battery life, depending on what you're doing (taxing work that uses the CPU will make more of a difference, but playing streaming video they're about the same for battery life).

    Nice review style- because you help us work out whether the differences are game changers or just marginal improvements depending on our usage type. I am mainly a Note taker (typing) Emailer, and a Voyeur RUclipsr..not artist/student/heavy gamer. 6 hours max a week on my Surface Pro 2 for the last three years. ....that's it folks. Grunt work is on my company Lenovo laptop. So I am a basic hacker/normie in the home digital food chain. Can I put up with periodic heat fans in the background at modest decibels - Yeh. Good track pad (anything had to be better than my current one) - Yeh. Good digital pen - Yeh. Bloatware I read elsewhere from HP critic - Grrr Yeh. Front facing speakers - Woo Hoo ! Folks...we have come a long way since my old typewriter days and my Kodak Instacamera...I keep reminding my 9 year old son. Keep smelling the digital roses!

    Hi Lisa, great review as always. I like that you compare the benchmarks between HP i7 and Surface i5 and i7 . But how is the battery live between Surface i5 and i7?
    I have at the moment a Surface Pro 4 core M and a Acer Nitro V7 from 2014 and I think about it to sell my pro 4 and give the Acer to my Parents as present to get the new Pro i7 as replacement for both.

  • @HenrikBecker84

    Are either of these devices expected to last in terms of durability and performance? I bought a MacBook Pro in 2012 that still runs like a breeze (i7, 8gigs of RAM and 128Gig SSD) and is in good shape (despite my handling). Also, looking into the future, will 8 gigs cut it 3 years from now with 20 Chrome tabs, Word, Skype, etc open at the same time?

    Hi Lisa! Can you tell us if the Spectre X2 has backlight bleed? For what I've read in forums a lot of people is complaining that the Surface Pro has backlight bleed on the bottom of the screen and I was able to see it in your SP review when the screen was white (it's more noticeable by CTRL-ALT-DEL). I'd really like your input to decide which one to buy, because I was really disappointed by the bleed on my SP4 and returned it.

    • @gyozakeynsianism
      @gyozakeynsianism 7 лет назад +1

      Ghazi the Spectre x2 I took a look at at Best Buy had a perfect screen with no backlight bleeding. I'm considering returning my SP2017 (with backlight bleed) and getting that instead. Lisa did a great smackdown of the two but didn't Kevin backlight bleed.

      mohammed mashud true yes these form factors are great in that case. i was lookin at the spectre for a long time since they announced it. I think I'm going to wait this one out. i hope my laptop lasts me a few more years. at least through nursing school. nice devices but damn they are so expensive.

    I would pop for the Surface but that fuzzy surface is a deal breaker; that junk gets dirty and cannot be cleaned...really bad idea.

      L Galina it's really easy to clean. But you can always get the old type cover and save $60 in the process

      Where can I get a 2017 Surface without Alcantara? I do not see such an option anywhere on the internet.

    • @jrice135
      @jrice135 7 лет назад

      All you have to do is plug "Alcantara" into the youtube search engine to find out what a horrible user-unfriendly labor-intensive product Alcantara is. It does make the auto industry a lot of money though because it is very inexpensive for them and the public actually thinks it's a luxury feature.

      When you buy the tablet you don't get the type cover and the surface pen. You buy them separately, so you can go with the last gen type cover.

    Biasedness is showing like damnnnn. Not a fair comparison. Can hear from her judgement. Eg, hp has more pixel but then she said its only 200pixel more than surface. Not much. But then, when it comes to nits, she said surface has *much brighter* screen with 465nits. When in fact, there's only a difference of 65nits. Like biased much?

    I have returned my new surface pro I7 model and purchased the sprectre x2 instead. It's safe to say, the build quality on surface pro is awful. The screen backlight is even worse than Pro 4 model. And the surface I7 model actually has thermal throttling during my test on it, the frequency keeps falling with time. The battery life on the another hand, not that obvious different...both of them can't last a whole day if you watch Netflix on them all the time and play some Warcraft and CSGO stuffs.
    The only thing matters me is that spectre doesn't have other color option for the type cover, and the replacement for that metal type cover will cost you $276 plus tax... which makes me uneasy using it...I broke the surface type cover before

    • @qingohyeah6775

      Yes, the backlight bleeding is very annoying. It shouldn't happen on a premium product like the surface pro.

    Don't get a surface. I bought a SP4 and the touch screen stopped working. I asked a friend about his a month later. Same issue. Never buy one again and it made me sad.

    • @maythesciencebewithyou
      @maythesciencebewithyou 7 лет назад +3

      Aw Snizzap Well, other people do enjoy their surface. So I don't get what your real problem is to go out and tell people not to buy one. You work for the competition or Apple fanboy?

    • @ghazi1175
      @ghazi1175 7 лет назад +3

      May the Science be with You Actually there were SO MANY problems with the SP4 that it reduces confidence on the brand: Keyboard glitches, sleep glitches, screen software errors for months. In my case I had to return mine because of terrible screen bleed and it was an extremely common problem. It is even worse now with the 2017 Surface Pro

    • @complaingel6967
      @complaingel6967 7 лет назад

      Uhm I said I was sad. I really loved the product when I bought it, but not only does the touchscreen seem to be an issue with MANY buyers (Google it) also there is the overheating and warping issue that is has on the sides of it. Do your research before you consider it the greatest product of all time and jump on people who have bought one and had a bad experience with it.
