You can't take what she says in a single slice, she is webbing a lot of ideas together. Games make us better in a lot of real life and useful ways, this is her arguement. So, playing more games can, in fact, translate into us being better at problem solving, collaboration, etc... which increases our potential to change reality for the better.

Gaming does not solely claim social cooperation, by any means, but it does give people the opportunity to collaborate and achieve a goal that all people involved want to get to. Especially for young people at school, it gives them something that alot of the time real life cannot. I experienced this myself and got frustrated when people didn't understand what i wanted to play games instead of spend time with people that i don't like.

I just realized that Kelly McGonigal is her twin sister. A beauty with brains is already a deadly combination. Two beauties with brains is a lethal mixture.

I quite agree. We should start by placing more value on the social contribution of our work rather than money itself.

When you put it that way it definitely seems reasonable for me since I started when I was about 3 years old. It's just hard to estimate what an average player plays. If she said the average person, period, then that would obviously be wrong. But I really have no clue what the average gamer does.

Assuming they start gaming around age 11 that is about 2 hours 45 minutes a day gaming. I know I've spent 12 hours each weekend day playing some games, which would mean that I wouldn't have to game at all during the week and more than meet that goal. So, that is an entirely reasonable number.
Even if I just gamed for 6 hours each weekend day (12 hours on the weekend), that leaves just 1 hour 30 minutes each weeknight of gaming, which is less than most people spend watching TV each night.

I played world of Warcraft Alot!! Growing up between ages 16-20 think I've logged close to 10,000 hours but I stay up all night and all day and sometimes I'd play in bacterial infested environments and I was surprised to find a world outside of the world anyway all in all I enjoyed this video

I'm not sure in a game the obstacle has to be unnecessary. I have created many games to engage my kids in helping with chores.

The average player spends 10,000 hours on them by the age of 21. I find that hard to believe. That's nearly a year and a half of gaming.

Sorry for posting this 4 months ago, but what game are you talking about? In case you forgot what you wrote, it was about a game that "has really poor design", "involves people competing for artificially scarce financial resources in a quest to produce ever increasing quantities of trade"

To me reality is the ultimate game. What we really need is to get regular people more engaged with actual reality. Just think of the health benefits if instead of watching football on TV or playing a video game version, we actually went out and played a couple of rounds? Wonder how much this woman charges for speaking engagements...

I think the person who posted that is probably referring to our current fast capitalist/corporate society. Not a game you purchase, but the game we play as citizens competing to live...

So, does teaching kids fierce competition the source of our "win at all costs whether we are right or wrong and be damed with the consequences" attitude? This is a big concern in the US where competitiveness is almost considered the pinnacle of greatness and the only way to motivate. Personally I can't stand competitive games, at least not the ones that pit human vs. human players. I much prefer the cooperative games and puzzles. But, for me, finding great cooperative games online seems rather difficult. Maybe I am looking at the wrong games?

OK, reality is broken: we've got the various environmental crisises, the global monetary crisis, wars, famines, natural disasters and whatnot. People already waste many hundreds of hours on games--as she points out, enough to create Wikipedia several times over. The obvious logic is that if we could get more people to give up gaming and work on something worthwhile like Wikipedia, maybe we could fix some of these problems. Her logic is that we should spend more time on games instead...

24 minutes in I really started to get pissed of. Most games aren't commercially made as 90% of games is indie games. 90% why are people stupid.

      I could try.
It just seems today that many people love reading about things they deeply care about, like WoW and Farmville because then it feels important and fulfilling and promising, which is good because it's very positive and vibrant and ressourceful and..., and ..., and..., ...that was my impression in a nutshell.
I don't care much for more elaboration but let's just say it doesn't look very serious or groundbreaking to me. It's very indulgent and kinda repetitive.
But seriously any of the negative reviews could give you a better insight on the matter. They all make valid points.

You probably don't play video games. That's a very ignorant thing you said. How can you talk on the matter if you don't play video games? Can't talk bad about something you never tried.
