Just remember, everyone, that speed limits are not targets! On roads with 40 or 50, you still need to drive according to conditions - which includes tight bends, for example.
Great description of how this useful system works a 'Speed Camera Warning or Notification System' rather than a 'Speed Camera Detection System' because it doe not receive signals from the Speed Camera it just tells you where they are due to database indirmation
Great video thanks. I will look if my Kia has the same feature. The only thing is we’re I live the thing will be constantly bonging. One other point if your using apple car play and you use Waze is really good at telling you of speed cameras.
Thank you. I've been looking everywhere for a description of what the audible warnings are for. I think there are more bleeps. This is a great start to find out what they all mean.
Nice video, I’ve not bothered with it before but thought I’d try it out on driving lessons today. Feedback form pupils is they like the subtle reminders. The Average Speed Camera works really well, as it displays your average speed…… shame the Ioniq speedo is 3mph out. It works in the background with Apple Car Play, and if you switch from the Hyundai to Apple Maps it’ll still warn you. I’ve not tried it with a route, that’s one for tomorrow.
Thanks for this Matt, I had no idea this existed. I know I'm on the old software because I've still got the three screen picture. There's no way I could even begin to perform the update 😅 my wife may be happy to attempt it but I don't really want to stress her out at this already stressful time. So if I remember to check I'll let you know if it's there on the old version. If it's not I'll look for a small child to update it for me ! 😂
Hmmm that was helpful! yesterday I was on the A12 to Colchester (& Back) a 70 mph 3 & 3 lane road. round some of the areas in cruise at 60mph there were the usual speed camera ' bongs' but they kept going for about a minute or more despite the fact I wqas within the speed limit. There were no 'Average speed' warning or visible cameras... but I suspect this was an average speed or some other form of camera detection/anpr ? I also get 'bongs' when I go over the railway crossing which has 'light jumper' cameras for both directions. any comments? I have the Aug 24 update installed. '21 ioniq premium SE
A quick question. The August 2024 software update has increased the volume of the speed camera warnings to the point where they are ridiculously loud. I've searched all the menus I can find to locate where I can change the volume but found nothing. Has anyone else found this problem, and more importantly, how to change it? I'm driving a 2022 petrol Kona but the software seems very similar or even identical to the Ioniq except for the EV bits. Thanks!
@@GoGreenAutos Thanks for the quick reply. I have tried that, and it doesn't appear to work, but the problem is catching the volume switch as it 'bongs' as it is so quick. I will keep trying that, as it is the logical answer. Edit: Actually I've not tried the steering wheel volume, just the rotary knob on the screen. Should both work, I'd guess, but will try the steering wheel one next time
@GoGreenAutos A quick update; I've tried several times to use both the steering wheel volume control and the volume control on the screen and neither adjusts the volume of the camera warnings. I'd be grateful to hear if you have the same issue if you do update your Ioniq's software. Cheers, Rob
@@GoGreenAutos Now sorted, thanks to an email reply from Hyundai Technical. Go to Settings then Sound then Driver Guidance and finally Guidance volume. The slider for Navigation sounds effects is the one to change camera alerts volume. Hope this helps someone else.
Ok you went through two different types of speed cameras. The last one being a digital one that doesn’t run out of film. The other type (square yellow box) or GATSO type has not had any cameras in them for years at least in my area. But they still do their job as everyone slows down for them.
Yes. They're changing the coolant on all 38kWh Ioniqs and some Konas. If they do the job correctly, its sorted. The issue seems that some are not flushing the system properly, so the issue returns.
Microsoft phones back in 2013 which had wireless charging years before anyone else, gave a warning when entering a speed limit. It was very good. When MS stopped making phones I went to the dinosaur world of Android. Even to this day Android is still trying to catch up.
Question. Does it warns abiut approaching a camera even if the in-built Sat Nav is not activated? The Nissan Leaf system speed camera warning is always activated, which is a good idea as i dont have thd Sat Nav turned on when im driving lically.
I have heard that there is a sign recognition display, but it needs coding at the main dealers for it to be switched on. Can you confirm if this is true or just a rumour ? Be nice to have the signs displayed on the dashboard.
It works fine all the time if I’ve got Waze open on Apple CarPlay, so it may just be an Android Auto issue. In answer to your query over how long it’s been in there, I’ve always had it on my Ioniq’s, it’s part of the Hyundai live services. Worth noting that the alerts are tied to the speed the car speedo is reading, and as you’ll know the Ioniq is a bit optimistic over what the speedo reads, so Waze will use the GPS speed for an over speed warning.
Ok thanks. But does the background Hyundai speed warning still work if you have a route navigation active in Waze? If not, then its working the same as AA.
@@GoGreenAutos Yes - certainly has done in the past. I currently have the audible warning from Hyundai disabled as I’m using the PocketGPSWorld CamerAlert app which has all of the common mobile speed trap spots as well which are more common around here than fixed cameras. The interaction between Apple CarPlay and the built in navigation has changed over updates to both Apple and the Hyundai updates so it could be they’ve changed the behaviour, but I’ll give it a run turned on and see if it still does it.
In the Ioniq, the phone has to be connected via a USB cable. Some newer cars are now going wireless, but that's all before the Ioniq's time. You can buy a wireless adaptor, which we use in our other Ioniq and a video will be coming soon on that.
Yes it is quite quiet. I don't think the volume of the camera notification is controllable. You could try turning up the volume when Google Maps is sounding that bong.
So you are saying to your viewers it's okay to speed anywhere you like until you get to a speed camera? That's encouraging criminal activity and any of us who have suffered the life changing consequences caused by a motorist exceeding the speed limit, will condemn you for doing this.
I agree. Sorry Matt but this is a poor message to send. A driver should be fully aware of the speed limits from the signage and adhere to these limits. I appreciate that you did not break the speed limit yourself but you implied with your comment that you would not appear on RUclips that you would otherwise. You might disagree but this is the crazy world of deliberate misinterpretation. If you are particularly unfortunate somebody caught might even cite your video. Unlikely but not impossible.
At what point in that video did he say it's OK to speed? Not every driver speeds intentionally you know. Sometimes they simply didn't see the sign, or they were distracted by their kids arguing etc. The point is, this will do more to prevent speed related accidents than cause. We're not robots. We all make unintentional mistakes. Those who blatantly speed and have no regard for other road users or pedestrians are the ones you should point your frustrations at.
At no point did he suggest he would break the speed limit. On the contrary he was saying that he *wasn't* going to break the speed limit just to demonstrate what happens for a RUclips video! He explained what the car would do instead, if perhaps, as in this case the camera was located around a bend with no prior warning.
Mat doesn't know the speed limit anyway. He keeps saying it's 50mph when there is no signage so notify you of this. At the start he is in a 30mph zone as indicated by the signage and as he leaves the area it changes to a national speed limit road (@1:31). If this then became a 50mph road there would be markers at set spacings (can't remember the actual distance off the top of my head), which aren't present. So it's 30mph,NSL,30mph as far as the video shows.
Just remember, everyone, that speed limits are not targets! On roads with 40 or 50, you still need to drive according to conditions - which includes tight bends, for example.
Playing with speed cameras! now that's going the extra mile for your viewers. Very useful info thanks 👍
I'd have to enable RUclips memberships to cover the cost of the speeding fine!

The older versions of the nav software include the speed camera bings & bongs.😊

I find the Google maps speed warning to be too subtle. Also noticed that it misses lots of cameras.
Yes it is. But its not a speed warning, like in the Hyundai nav, its just a notification of a camera location (i.e. regardless of speed).
Thanks - yes meant to write 'speed camera warning' @@GoGreenAutos
Your infotainment looks different to mine, has there been an update?
Hyundai issue updates every six months (June/Dec). I've done some videos on this, see www.youtube.com/@GoGreenAutos/search?query=ioniq%20update
