Shy, I have an idea. You could lay your black falcon army like this: 1st row - Swordsman, 2nd row, pikemen, with their pikes pointed through the gaps in the line. Repeat for remaining rows, increasing the elevation of the spears. Do this until they reach 45 degress. The just lay your swordsmen
You'd enjoy my Clone company then! It's got its Capt and each platoon has its Lt and a Sgt per squad. I've also enjoyed the more realistic formations where there is that separation between units. They need some larger black falcon shield for a proper shield wall!
I do the exact same thing!! I don’t really post my armies much because they’re relatively small, being meant for play and not necessarily “army building being the end goal.” I’ve got a company of just 501st, plus a company of various battalions, where I’ve got a squad each of Wolfpack, 212th, and 41st forming one platoon, and so on. Then I make Rex the company commander of the 501st and Anakin the battalion commander.
I agree. Storytelling is the key to all this. By "storytemling", I mean adding functions, structures (grades) and differences that make the whole real + displaying the minifigs as a scene.
Armies, especially pre-radio, absolutely need to have distinct commanders for each tactical formation. It can also give you a chance to bling up a few of your minifigures even if the bulk of your army is strictly uniform. Once radios and accurate long-range weapons enter the picture (especially artillery), you're looking more at parade formations than battlefield ones for any large blocks of men. Banners for any army that needs to enter battle in actual formation will typically be at the front, probably on one extreme side or in the center, depending on the army's doctrine. They use the banner to signal to the unit and to dress ranks, and in heavy combat it forms a highly visible rally point if your formation is disrupted. It should be next to the unit's commander for much the same reason. If you have an overall commander for the entire army, or division commanders for mid-tier tactical units, they should each have their own banner (preferably differently shaped for different command levels) and probably a group of dedicated guards (likely picked men of some kind, be it veterans, generically big guys, or nobility, varying mostly by culture). Any thing beyond the basic tactical unit also needs at least one runner, with higher level command units needing comparatively more of those. Taken together, this lets your army coordinate broad maneuvers using pre-arranged banner signals and gives them limited ability to execute more complex orders using the runners, while giving each tactical subdivision its own local command center to boost cohesion and improve coordination.
Everytime I set up my clones for my personal army picture I set them up by units with their specific commander at the front of their respective units. Always love to see the commanders/captains in the picture with their unit behind them. It is funny when you see clone armies set ups and notice there is that one main commander/captain in the front and every other captain and commander is seperated from their unit. Like Cody, Gree, Fox is together and not in front of the 212th, 41st, and courscant guard.
I totally agree. I used to think the same thing myself. Only exceptions were for star wars where it's literally depicted that way - but even that is them in parade formation. For medieval stuff it's gotta be mixed and varied. We've all lined them up in identical poses/gear for fun, there is a certain aesthetic to it which is obviously why parade formation does this.
Right shoulder shift is real hard when you're a Lego figure... 😁 Speaking as a wargamer and student of military history, I hate seeing any formation of miniature warriors or soldiers without the standards, musicians and officers that real legions, battles, companies and regiments took to the field. So, I LOVE what you did here! And the result is so much more personalised, more appealing than rank after rank of mindless robo-men. (Fine for droid armies, but not for proud knights!)
@@rhettbrewer4648 ATM I'm working on a couple of Napoleonic minifig armies for use with 'Chosen Men' from Osprey, and a Cathay army for Oldhammer. Lego armies are certainly quick to build, and no painting required! :D Might soon try 'Lion Rampant' for Castle Knights retinues.
Some tips I like for my army is maybe having a small bit of terrain and having the units at the front look more battle ready and prepared with the ones at the back a little more relaxed, also thank you for your service🫡🫡
Lego Jurassic World as had a lot of diversity in just the grunts so I have very easy access to skin tones. I do agree that there should be more skin tones because it just looks better then a sea of yellow in my opinion.
My army is 15 up front and 4 deep of 401's, Mandalotians, Sith, Snow Troopers, clones, etc., each in their own formation. To create depth, each row is lined up one stud to the right from the front row instead of lining each row behind each other. Try it, it has a better visual display effect.
I just ordered a hundred or so medieval minifigures off of pick a brick over the last couple of days. This video has just changed my standard of what is actually a good looking army and what changed what I will do when I get them. I'm planning to sell as many as I can to subsidize the rest.
The stormtrooper army with groups on both sides made sense due to the fact they were not heading into battle. It was a huge line of soldiers to welcome the arrival of their leaders
Just a vet Squid here from a family of old Jarheads... wanted to tell you how much I like your channel. Keep on keeping on my man. I love seeing vets do their thing.
Cheers to the best and baddest UBER drivers in the world. We can't get anywhere... do anything... or heal ourselves with you. haha In all honesty. Thank you for your service... and hope you have a decent Memorial Day.
I’m pretty recently back to Lego after about 20 years away from the hobby - I don’t really understand the minifig army thing though. You really need a massive castle for them.
Agree with you i remember i haved a catapult with my black falcon army & a balista with my lion knights , too mutch of the same troops is not good it’s better to have different units actually i prepare some archer & crossbow men troops after i’m gonna do some lancer’s & of course prepare some war machines for them
This might be a dumb question, but would it help to put each row on steps like the risers stands choir singers stand on? I plan to army build clones and Jurassic World mercs, and am trying to figure out a good display for my shelf
I had already picked up on the "sword and shield at rest" idea from your previous videos... definitely looks better. I'm still waiting for my first 120 Black Falcons to arrive, so I haven't actually set anything up yet... and I can't get shields, swords, spears, or some helmets until Pick-a-Brick reopens its full inventory.
I couldnt have said this any better myself, I think the OCD in ppl like a nice uniformed baseplate of troops looking the same, but we know different Shy ;) lol
Slightly related to the video but im planning to start creating a lego union army from the American civil war. Problem is since they’re old the western cavalry minifigs are pretty expensive to get. Is there a good way to still build a decent army of them?
Serious question: what is a good number for a basic unit? I latched on to 4 as a number back when I started army building back in the late 90s mostly because of limited numbers, but now I want to make divisions based on historically accurate formations, so I've been trying to research medieval formations and I haven't found a clear answer on numbers. What's a basic unit to start with?
as far medieval.. it depends on country and unit type... I just like to use modern day platoon size as a basis... so like 33 is a good number. 4 rows of 8 with 1 leader in the front.
During the medieval ages typical royal armies were grouped at their lowest base into groups of 20 called a Vintaine, led by man called a Vintenar. 5 of these would form up to create a Centaine, and be led by a Centainar, and then 10 Centainar would form together and be lead by a Millenar. Something to think about when you decide you squad groups etc

I do need more pikemen in my army. That's a good idea.

haha! Just move one of those leaders forward 2 studs. Boom!!!
