Hello everybody! I'm Lily and my channel Lily Rose is mostly about DIY and nail art. I like to create videos with love and share amazing craft projects or easy nail designs for you to recreate at home!
With the arrival of fall there is one important decor piece that is findinding its way back into our life: candles. And hey, I’m not complaining! I love candles. Recently you see more and more woodwick candles popping up, which besides being just super stylish, make the most amazing fire crackling sound like your very own little fireplace. However, wood wick candles tend to be more expensive (as if candle prices weren't crazy enough) and not they aren't that readily available (at least here in Europe, that I know of). So the best is to create your owns. As the name states, you will need some wood wicks, which you can obviously buy, but again, more expensive,... and guess what, you can make your owns with some simple popsicle sticks! Nop, I’m not joking. Fancy expensive looking candles, made from some cheap popsicle sticks.

What if I don't have a hot glue gun? Also can I use ceramic container and not the glass one?

This was great, been searching for "your soy candles" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Cenadoelyn Candle Contemplation - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my neighbour got excellent results with it.

popsicle sticks are made of birchwood. Tongue depressors are also made of birchwood. These are typically wider than popsicle sticks and would probably be a good alternative if a larger flame is desired. The candle should always be burned until the pool of wax gets to the edge of the container to prevent tunneling into the wax. Adding additional wicks for more flames will shorten the minimum recommended burn time required to make the pool approach the edge of the container.

I have a whole jar of coconut oil, a night to spare, and a bunch of spare wax melts to use as wax!!! Imma go make some candles!
I like saving old candles to make new ones. Also a small jar of coconut oil is a dollar at dollar tree. And a whole bag of popsicle aticks

Just fyi, giving or selling candles, you need the 'safety label' to put on base, can make own or buy from candle supply stores. Probably for insurance purposes
Though it can vary from company to company, popsicle sticks are typically made of birchwood. Occasionally, plastic or another type of wood is used for ice cream sticks and holders, but birchwood remains popular!

I just made using juniper wood from out side. I did 2 different candles. 1) lard; didn't stay lit so added some wax and melted wax over stick. Still going 4 hrs. 2) Old wax and stick, let the old wax just melt down around the stick. Took a little bit to lite, so dripped wax on stick. Wala!! 3hr still burning. So my take on this is it's the wax on the stick. I believe any stick will do.
I have a box of craft popsicle sticks, and I think leftover wax from 10ish candles. Gonna bring them back to life. Thanks for the help!

I was concerned about how the olive oil would work, since olive oil has a low smoke point...was it a clean burn, not too smoky?

I just made a candle using this method. I only soaked them for an hour because I’m not patient so that may have effected the outcome. At first it kept burning out but eventually it stayed but it is very weak. I suggest doing multiple wicks if the candle is any bigger than the ones she used so it burns evenly. It does make a nice cracking sound :)
You saved me! I went to the store and the wicks were out. This will be my go-to for wicks. Thank you! I just hold the sticks in place when almost hardened or I use chopsticks. No glue needed. Put oil in sandwich bag with the sticks. Less mess. I use it to keep warm. It helps a lot during the cold seasons. Should we dip the sticks (after soaking the sticks with oil) in wax?
no expert here, but most normal wicks that you buy are dipped in wax too, so I think it's for a reason and can't hurt if you do it :)
Great video. I often use Binder bull clips and take off the little handle parts after I put the stick in :)

Wow this actually works. I have a candle with a tunnel and the wick got buried when I melted all the wax at the side, so this really helped my candle to burn some wax off with a temporary woodwick.
Yeah, all my candles end up tunneling. I think the normal wicks burn to fast. I have some candles I can't use anymore.

3:40 An alternative is to use a mini binder clip.
Add the popsicle stick to the binder clip, flat side down. Then carefully remove the metal tabs.
Wouldn't the plastic burn & create toxic fumes?

Thank you :) I came here because I love woodwick candles but they're obviously pricey. I also had a lot of candles that had a lot of wax left so I did the trick where you pour boiling water and the wax melts and dries at the top. I just melted a Frankenstein candle with all that extra wax and put this wick in so we'll see how it ends up.

It looks like it doesn’t work at first, but when the stick gets shorter it does work (olive oil - I also tried baby oil but the flame is smaller)

tried with soaking thin popsicle sticks in olive oil and placing 1 inside like a 3inx3in candle and it worked at first for a few hours but eventually, would burn out and needed to be re-lit. Even when re-lit, the flame is very low and dull and would soon go out. Hope this helps someone?!

This might happen if you’re using paraffin instead of soy or another organic wax that consumes itself, also if your candle is too wide for the size of your wick. At least this is what happens to me when I use string wicks in paraffin wax, since paraffin pools and doesn’t consumes itself, so it’s not ideal for candles on jars because they need space for the wax to flow away for the flame. Hope this helps!

This is a very resourceful idea! I've thought about this in the past how to reuse the left over wax out of the glass jars but didnt think about looking it up till now. I have all of these items already so, I dont have to make a trip to the Stowe. Great job!
Thank you for the video! I didn’t have any cotton wick string so I started looking at my popsicle sticks like hmm 🤔 are these any different than the store bought? Probably thinner but I’m gonna try it. So instead of soaking the sticks in oil overnight, I heated them in a pan with the oil. I figured the heat would hurry the absorption 😁 I guess we will see!

I've just tried this and the hot wax melted the glue stick glue and the wick fell over.
Just waited for the wax to solidify a bit and put it back in.

I've just googled what sort of wood lollipop sticks are made out of and they are made from birch wood
I got a thing piece of balsa wood at hardware store and am making my won wicks way cheaper... but why do you need to soak them in oil?????? please answer right away

Wooden wicks are made of softwood. Popsicle sticks and tongue depressors are softwood. Good idea.

They lasted me the same as a normal candle! I was actually surprised, I thought it would maybe last less, but no ☺️

I'm not sure about baby oil, although it could be an interesting experience, since it is mostly made of mineral oil. Since your husband is allergic to coconut and almond, maybe olive oil? It is cheap and works 😊

Sorry, but no on the glue... Burning glue is not good. You can use some of the melted wax to first set the stick initially.

How do I melt the wax down , in a non messy way. A way it won't ruin my pots or pansss...
I use a slow cooker (crock pot in the USA?) I originally stood the jar in water inside the pot but but it can be messy, so now I don't bother with water, I just stand the jar in the pot. I don't cover the pan or the jar so's to avoid getting condensation in the wax. All the obvious safety rules apply - don't let children or animals near and check regularly. It doesn't take long to melt because you only need to be able to get the top of the candle flat, so it doesn't have to be entirely liquid.
I've heard of people using disposable baking pans for bread loaves to melt their wax

I am totally baffled. I bought my craft sticks I've soaked them in olive oil overnight I trim the wicks exactly like you said and for the life of me I cannot give them to burn or stay lit. If I used extra virgin olive oil is that the issue and it's got to be just plain olive oil?please let me know I am totally baffled and I have watched every video I can and I'm still not getting these things the light.
Ohh no 😣 Hmm... could it be the wax? Have you considered soaking them for longer? Any type of olive oil should work!
I am having the same issue. I even lit a couple of popsicle sticks before I used them. They went out but I was hoping that it would stay lit once it was in the wax. I knew that I shouldn't have moved forward with using them. It could be the popsicle sticks. I bought sticks that didn't label the type of wood. Such a disappointment. I used 5 lbs of beeswax and 2.5 lbs of coconut oil.
I had the same problem. I don't think it's the oil - probably the sticks themselves.
After soaking them in the oil, wipe them off & DIP in MELTED WAX! If it's already in the candle, just drip some melted wax over the stick- any wood will work!

I would be very careful. I didn't know that candles let off carbon monoxide and I lit a candle I made with two popcycle sticks in my bathroom and it's a smaller bathroom It had been burning for awhile I went over to look at it and it was still burning I went back to brush my teeth and started feeling like I was having a heart attack I crawled out of the bathroom and started to collapse I thought I was dying I made to the kitchen Where I black out and a family member found me and I woke up. They took me to the ER and ran tests to see if I had a heart attack and the tests said I didn't so he diagnosed me with a panic attack but now that I think of it I might have poisoned myself with those candles and nearly killed myself. So be careful!😢

good idea, but how was the melt pool?....did it melt making a tunnel or did it melt all the way around the container?
Oh, I made (and already used 😂) these last year and don’t remember fully how it melted! I looked at a insta story I have on my insta account, that I made about the candle, and it appears to have melted slightly in tunnel. It is up to the middle all melted and the edges around the glass are not. However, the edges would be melting down with time too, because I remember I had only some wax left at the bottom 😃
