  • President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, "The “Tariff Lobby,” headed by the Globalist, and always wrong, Wall Street Journal, is working hard to justify Countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and too many others to name, continue the decades long RIPOFF OF AMERICA, both with regard to TRADE, CRIME, AND POISONOUS DRUGS that are allowed to so freely flow into AMERICA. THOSE DAYS ARE OVER! The USA has major deficits with Canada, Mexico, and China (and almost all countries!), owes 36 Trillion Dollars, and we’re not going to be the “Stupid Country” any longer. MAKE YOUR PRODUCT IN THE USA AND THERE ARE NO TARIFFS! Why should the United States lose TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SUBSIDIZING OTHER COUNTRIES, and why should these other countries pay a small fraction of the cost of what USA citizens pay for Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, as an example? THIS WILL BE THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA! WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID. WE ARE A COUNTRY THAT IS NOW BEING RUN WITH COMMON SENSE - AND THE RESULTS WILL BE SPECTACULAR!!!"

US subsidizes the R&D on drugs. That's why you're not allowed to buy the drug for a fraction of the price from Canada. If we all do that the racket doesn't work anymore and they have to raise prices everywhere. Now why do WE get to pay out the ass for this instead of other places? I don't know how that was worked out, and I don't like it much. I think it'd be fair to share the burden around the world if everyone else benefits from it anyway.

What's the math? Americans spend $1,439 per person on Canadian products; Canadians spend $10,998 per person on US products. I think someone is benefitting and that's not Canada. The only reason the US has a trade deficit is because it is 8 times more populous than Canada (335 millions vs 40 millions). That man is just stupid; I can reason why people are frustrated with the current system, but that man is not the answer to resolving anything.

Anyone who listens to Fox News with any sense of knowledge, will understand these tariffs will affect the average American. If you actually believe they want to stop fentanyl coming from Canada into the US, then it will only stop one percent. Probably more fentanyl is produced in the States than what manages to get through the border from Canada. You may think you will not be affected, but agricultural products, including grains, potash, oil, lumber, wood, cement, minerals, aluminum, uranium and car parts all go through the US border from Canada and will be taxed, that tax will be passed on to the consumer. US cars will cost an average of three thousand dollars more in the US, washers, dryers anything with aluminum will cost you more. Cell phones. Lumber tariffs will be passed on to consumers, so building a new shed or a new home will cost you a lot more. I won't even get you more worked up if I tell you about the retaliatory tariffs that Canada has imposed on American goods coming into Canada. Mostly, jobs will be lost. Sadly, on both sides.

No, Canada does not own part of the U.S. energy, but it is a major supplier of energy to the United States. Canada and the U.S. are each other's main source of imported energy, and the two countries have a complex energy trade relationship.
    Energy imports from Canada
Crude oil: Canada supplies about 60% of the U.S.'s crude oil imports.
Natural gas: Canada supplies about 99% of the U.S.'s natural gas imports.
Electricity: Canada supplies about 85% of the U.S.'s electricity imports.
Uranium: Canada supplies about 25% of the U.S.'s uranium imports.
Energy trade between Canada and the U.S.
In 2023, the value of energy trade between the two countries was US\$153.7 billion.
Canada has a year-on-year surplus in energy trade.
Canada's energy exports make up about 27% of all merchandise exports to the U.S.
    Energy infrastructure
Over 71 pipelines and 35 transmission lines cross the border between the two countries.
The Eastern Interconnection allows power to be exchanged between the two countries.

@distinguishednetizen5400 trump ran on reducing consumer prices. Tariffs increase consumer prices.

The consumers pay for the increase cost so why are citizens being punished.

@@montanan1997 I believe he's referring to the 10% tariffs on China, compared to more than double that placed on our neighbors and allies.
I read a theory that this is to prevent China from circumventing our tariffs on them by going through Canada or Mexico, but I'm skeptical.

@@montanan1997 What witchcraft said is exactly right. China is our top adversary. We should be moving away from doing business with them, not giving them tariffs lighter than that of our actual trade partners.

This is so bad... futures markets just tanked, and he's telling people to "expect pain?" This guy is a joke. Why would you tell people you would bring down inflation during the election only to tax us more? Not everyone is madly in love with this guy like he thinks, people will turn on him for this
