What an incredible way to teach and communicate do you have, Julia. You bring your own energy and at the same time it shows you know how to teach technique but you also transmit peace, security and conviction, in that way you remind me of someone we both admire so much, the master Victor Wooten.
I'm now 62 and just started yesterday my my bass slap lessons after watching you! If I learned this I'll send you my video. Thank you Julia. Just give me 10 years to be exact! ( Joking )
One of the best slap lessons I've seen! I'm just picking the bass back up after 40+ years. I've played guitar for 56 years, but only played bass in college. ('83), so this is great!
this is by far the best video on teaching how to slap. If you aren't a teacher, you should be. You are fantastic, I can hear your encouragement in your voice. I definitely need to subscribe. Ciao for now.
i am a bassist for a month now. I am not going to a teacher yet. I swear i learn how to slap bass the first time i saw this video. Congratulations Juliaa!
XD God i was carressing my dog's head while watching this, and it took me some time to notice i was slapping my thumb on her head ... She was like "ok, weird, but i take it !"
Thank you for a solid technical video without all of the gimmicks and hyperbole. I like your natural approach to teaching and the way you break things down.
Thank you for this video. I’m a guitarist of 20 years almost (I’m 34) …I’m learning bass out of necessity because we have too many guitarists . I want to learn instantly and I know that isn’t realistic. Just the small encouragement to not get frustrated is actually nice. Thanks!
Older experienced keyboard player here who is now a bass player wanna be, lol. Bought an Ibanez SR1345B recently and have been watching Julia's vids as she is easy to understand and follow (and she is REALLY REALLY good!). What an excellent job of teaching. Can't thank Julia and Thomann's enough for speeding up this endeavor and keeping it pro. Thx all!
It is good, just wish they went over more thumbing techniques. Bouncing off the string never worked for me, took ages to find someone who did a strike through tutorial because I did not know what I was looking for
I'm self taught (Hal Leonard). One thing I e noticed about "fixed points" as you pointed out, I do all those things you mentioned. I practice daily both sitting and standing (you must practice in both positions). I've noticed that when standing I tend to use the inside of my upper forearm as my point of contact. I still put my thumb on the pickup out of habit. But with the forearm you get an awareness of the entire instrument. A slight conter pressure against the body of the bass affects everything from fretting notes to awareness of where the strings are and accuracy in striking them. Good point!
Very nice teaching. I have tried hearing many lessons but this lesson the way you took to considerations the problem player faces and examples with notations. The best. Keep it up. God bless.
I have to agree, I was getting desperate in learning the slap( saw all sorts of videos), then Julia showed on my search. Boom 3 minutes into her tutorial and am slaping
Julia, I love you, thank you, thank you for this video, I'm taking classes but I see that my teacher gives us the technique a little quickly and doesn't give us this advice on how to bounce your finger on the string and how to practice it with different figures and notes. helped a lot
Great video! I’ve watched several slap/pop technique tutorials and I didn’t get much from them. You have a great way of presenting your lesson that is clear and understandable for someone just learning slap pop. Thanks !!
This lesson is very good/ excellent musical pedagogy. There is no rambling or unnecessary verbal diversion: Talk is strictly limited to business of the lesson. Well done. Technicalities well described and demonstrated, even relevant anatomical con
Hey, thanks for translating! I actually changed my strings two days ago (while watching a movie on netflix, called `Let's go to Prison'. I like watching random comedies to unwind after getting work done. This was a short intermezzo to my main point, I'll get back on track...) for the first time in maybe over a year and I had that exact exact exact same thought when I tried slapping haha
Terrific video. ...thanks so much. Going to give it a go....buying a base this week. I've been at guitar for some 5 years now (retirement project) but I get tired of the same old midi bass stuff when I record in Logic. Want to try putting in the real thing! :) Will keep you posted. You are an excellent teacher by the way Julia...I was a good one for 30 years (design-art and sculpture) so I know one when I see one. Keep well and thanks again.
Considerations. Excellent Presentation neat and informal without distracting background. Less than 10 minutes in length perfect for my 13 yo (and me). Good playing sufficientlydemonstrated
Fantastic lesson. So easy to follow especially as I am a complete beginner. I have a 5 string bass. All of the bassist you mentioned are very good. My favourite is Reginald Arvisu aka Fieldy from the band Korn.
Great video and im a pick player but i always wanted to lean how to slap some bass lines and as always julia is a very god at explaining it so you can understand it
Great intro tutorial. What I would like to see in the future is something that helps us put together a funky slap groove that just sits on its own. When you had Marcus Miller out for that workshop, he helped create a groove that was so on point that even when he stopped you still felt all of the beat, anticipating the next pop/slap he'd do. I think this is the missing skill a lot of us are searching for as we incorporate more slap. Also, how about you & Lee Sklar do a zoom?!?!
Julia is undeniably the best thing to ever happen to thomann.
Yup, she's the only reason I subscribed!
to thomann and to woman :)
@@jimpaull731 me too
yess, one of the best female thomann bass presentationists. I will be glad if she presents all instruents, guitars, drums, keyboards also.
Simp.
Julia is such a great bass player and seems so genuine. Love the content.
Thank you - that's the best tutorial I've watched for learning how to begin playing slap.
Thank you! :) // Cheers, Julia

Best bass teacher I never had.
She made me aware of a bass was even needed
You’re a great teacher Julia! I bought my first bass from Thomann a month ago and then I discovered your videos. Very helpful indeed!
Thank you Julia for showing so many of us in a tutorial that you did without belittling us and yet you have that energy spark that we wish to achieve.
Seriously the best slap bass tutorial I've seen yet! Thank you!
Thank you Julia. You're THE BEST.
Out of all the beginner slap and pop tutorials this has gotta be my favorite, thanks Julia

You remind me so much of a young Suzi Quattro. You should suss out can the can, devil gate drive, 48 crash. Awesome songs from mid 70's

As everyone else must said, i think finally a proper tutorial on Slap. Thank you, please carry on, you are very likeable and that’s the spirit!

The best slap lesson I've seen lately.
Finally, an easy guide to slapping and popping. Thanks needed this! Just picked up the Bass after years of playing the guitar. I'm hooked!
"Forget me nots" at the end, great choice ! :)
Love that song! ;) // Cheers, Julia
And "Take the Power Back" :D

Just in time for my JB75 that arrived today. Thanks Thomann and Julia!
excellent teacher and I played bass for 40 years already
I appreciate that you suggest slower tempos to begin with.
