Thanks for taking the time to make this video clark. I am in the middle of removing the alternator on a 2003 S600TT. Lots of inter cooler metal and rubber pipes in this area so I'm aiming to remove the screen wash and coolant tank entirely to get extra space to manoeuvre the alternator out
What is that air pump for? The car I bought has a coil over conversion (ABC Delete) is that for the suspension? If so I can remove that permanently! I'm trying to change my ALT I've got all the bolts out but lol now trying to pull it out the bay -_-
No the suspension pump is half of the power steering pump. The pump above the aleternator is the air injection pump for smog related issues..... Car will misfire like crazy if you mess with it.
@@clarkrupp ok, good to know, but remove tht and the coil pack will give me enough room to pull the alt through that opening and back down is all I needed to see. Was about to pull the radiator 😅
@@clarkrupp will be ordering a coil pack from you after I get this and the power steering pump replaced, are you still making the upgraded transformers for the coils?
Interesting - the Mercedes parts diagrams all show the alternator as a single unit mated to the block with 4 bolts and an odd-shaped gasket (that looks sort of like the state of Utah). However, you've clearly left that housing attached to the block and removed the guts of the unit, which is sealed by that large o-ring. Did your replacement alternator come with a new o-ring? I've yet to do this...and sincerely appreciate your experience on the job. Cheers,
Rob ! I started in with the long bolt on that outer shell and then took a look at the new alternator and thought......ok where does the water line hook up ? Noticed the 6 bolt holes on the new one and figured that's all that needed to happen - and it was......Yes, the rebuilt alternator off EBAY came with a new o-ring. $223 free shipping
Hey Rob, I usually try to respond to posts unless people are absolute morons... Never saw this but now responding to a more recent post. Right..... take the six bolts out of the face, maybe tap on the unit to release and pull the guts out. New alternators come with new o-rings on them,
Hey Clark! Bought my voltage transformer from you few months ago! Have a question about this alternator stuff... is the alternator that comes with the car have a regulator?
Its internal but not really accessible. I know they're rebuildable with kits from Bosch but never tried. If they let go, the bearings are probably about done too.
@@clarkrupp Thats great insight, is there a replacement alternator for the V12 that does not depend on the radiator cooling system. Like taking the housing off the alternator and put a plug in for the coolant flow to stop reaching the alternator. This way we would have just an alternator without radiator cooling system? Has that been done before? Any insight would be great Clark! Greetings from your customer in Northwest Illinois
What year is your car ? 2013 and up have conventional looking alts but I'm sure mounting holes and belt tension make them a non-starter. The non-turbo models have relatively cheap alternators and the TT's not so much so. I've bought all rebuilts off EBAY with no issues - 3 so far.....
I have one of those too..... an hour job and a couple hundred bucks for the alternator as I recall. All the 2000 -2012 use water cooled alts. the 2000-2002 have a lower output alternator
Clark you saved my day. Took me 2hrs taking it easy thanks to you 🤛
Great ! Simple things we can to to help each other ....
Cheers for the vid, done this job before and am faced with doing it again and I'm no longer dreading it.
My exact feeling on my 2nd go..... I've got four or these cars and they've all lost one.
Brilliantly presented! Thank you very much Clark.
Thanks !

I believe that air pump in the video is for emissions.

Good stuff
Yeah this video was well needed. Thanks Clark. What year is this exact 1 you changed the alternator on?
This was an o1 S600 but I had to replace the alternators on an 02 CL600 and an 05 CL65 - all the same drill.....
