Making Milling Machine Handwheels

  • So that old mill I bought is built well where it counts, but they tried to save on cost by cutting a lot of corners with the smaller attachment parts. The handhweels were especially terrible, just cast aluminum with plastic handles rubbing on metal. So I decided to make some new ones with bearings in the handles for super smooth operation.

    Thank you! I've been wondering how that 3 lobe geometry was cut. Now I know. Love the bearings in the handle. What a great way to improve the feel of any machine!

    Nice handwheels.
    Using your hands to remove swarf on a running lathe is a quuick way to loose a lot of flesh very quickly if the machine catches it.

    They came out great, I like the bearings in the handle, neat touch.

    Nice handles! Always good to meet another Phil who can make stuff. Editing and music were very good on this too!

    Nice job. A quick tip for you. Deburr or counter sink your holes before tapping that way it gives your tap a place to start and a better chance of going in straight.Thanks for sharing

    Since I'm pretty much always skint, I would have probably just cleaned up the old wheels in the lathe, refinished the spline on the old handwheels, and made a new handle. But either way, these came out great!

    Bore a hole and press in a bronze bushing? No, I have not heard! I will show off, translate a bunch of metal to grind the SAME handles.
    Расточить отверстие и запрессовать бронзовую втулку? Нет, не слышал! Я буду выпендриваться, переведу кучу металла что бы выточить ТАКИЕ ЖЕ рукоятки.

    I like the bearings...I do wonder, however, if after 3 years the knurling is still in favor.

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  2 года назад

      Yep the knurling is still fine and provides a good grip. I'm actually using these handles on a different mill now (just the grips, on a different handhweel) and I still love them. Seems like a small thing but the bearings and large diameter grips really do make cranking the table a lot more smooth and comfortable. I'd suggest this upgrade to anyone who has a mill, and I'm actually thinking about making the same thing for the lathe carriage.

    G'day you made a great job of those hand wheels I have been toying for awhile about machining my own. I have the SC6 lathe and the SX 2.7 mill and both have pretty cheap aluminium handles with the grips to small so thank you on this vid I really enjoyed it. I have subscribed regards John Tasmania

    I take it your lathe has power crossfeed? Getting a great finish there

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  6 лет назад

      Yes, without the power crossfeed this would have been a very tedious job ;) And I think there's not much you can do about the stringy chips. Even tooling with a chipbreaker built in does the same on aluminum for me. Really annoying..

      I've only got crappy change gears that tend to come loose at the moment. I'm about to make a quick change gearbox. Hopefully I can get better results

  •  6 лет назад +4

    I hate plastic handles too. Turned out very nice, bro!
    Btw, where did u get that quick change tool post? Or just came with a lathe? I really like to have one but cant find here, even the dovetail style.

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  6 лет назад +3

      Hey thanks! That toolpost system is called "multifix", I think it's a german patent and a lot of people have them here. They're really good but kind of expensive. Maybe you can order the dovetail ones from a site like Banggood? But you have a bridgeport man, you could just make your own ;)

    •  6 лет назад +1

      Phil Vandelay yeah. I planed to make one but kind of hard to find good materials here (dont want to make from mild steel or low carbon steel). And should be heat treat and grind after machining :(

      Hey Ca Lem www.createtool.com/index.asp these guys do aftermarket versions that match perfectly to the Swiss Multifix :) and cheap they should be able to help you out!

    great video ..what type of lathe bit are you using for cutting and chamfering ..

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  6 лет назад

      Just some random standard brazed carbide tool with a 45° edge, it's pretty handy because you can cut and camfer with the same tool. Someone gave me a whole box of used bits for free so I'm not sure where they came from originally.

    what lathe make and model are you using?? and how do you like it??

    • @PhilVandelay
      @PhilVandelay  5 лет назад +2

      It's a SIEG SC10 but like most of these chinese machines you can find the same one under different brands/names. I'm overall satisfied with it for the price, of course with a cheap machine there will always be some things you want do adjust/fix/change. But it has plenty of power for me and it's precise enough for what I do. Most of these chinese models are quite similar so I think it doesn't make a huge difference which one you get. Worst thing on this one is the top slide which is common. You're better off only using it if you really need to. Most things I don't like is minor stuff like things not feeling smooth but you can get good results with it regardless.
      I think this type of machine always involves putting some additional work in, I've done some modifications to it and I'm now pretty happy with it. I've posted most of them on my instagram. In the end you get what you pay for...

    Super Videos, aber bitte fass nicht mehr mit den Fingern in die Späne während die Maschine läuft, dass kann ganz böse Enden. Hab das schonmal gesehen, ist echt unschön...
    Nimm lieber einen Schraubenzieher oder ein anderes Stück Material, ist für dich besser und für mich zum zusehen ;)

    tried. it is commendable. but the pen is not very pretty. you can see the nut, there is a gap between the pancake and the handle, a void in front of the front bearing. knurling by 2/3 looks incomplete (and all due to the fact that the holder is made incorrectly - the bolt and nut at the lathe chuck). you made the spline part well, but redo the handle, spoils the whole good idea. there are many videos on RUclips for making a rotary handle with a blind front end
