Sum 41 started out sorta crappy live, but they've improved so much since they started out, But the fact of the matter is that Green Day needed the extra people for the live American Idiot shows, that made it an amazing live experience. Billie Joe is still an amazing lyricist, so nothing much has changed. With all the guitars on AI, they needed the extra people, plus piano and all that. That, and Billie Joe liked to entertain the crowd. I'm glad we both agree that Green Day rocks. Peace :)

The chord progression is the same as the intro in this song, but this song changes... You know much about music theory? D Minor has one note flat, as does F Major. The Scientist chords are: Dm, Bb, F, C. That is in D minor. This song starts out in D minor, but ends with F Major. Hope that made sense :)

They doesn't allways play this song on piano? The one on the cd is with guitar, and this one on piano. Some artists likes to do a little twist when they're playing live, and thats what sum 41 did here. And it sounds so good with piano! :)
I think it's trying to show that he's very bitter about breaking up, was scared about a relationship, and stopped things before they went too far. Afterwards, he's feeling depressed, but knows it wouldn't have been right.
