The reactions of surprise and delight when soldiers come home are incredibly moving
My mom was away for 1 year and a half because she couldn’t get a visa to come back to the US because there was a war going on. I just began to loose hope that I would never see her again, but I was surprised with a video call with her at the airport. (BTW, I was 9-11 when it happened so it was really hard on me)
The surprise homecomings at school assemblies are unforgettable moments for everyone involved.

I've seen these as a kid because of 1) curiousity and 2) justt to cry....these videos made my younger self cry tears on tears but after a while, growing up I know understand the consequences and neautral outcomed this could make me feel as the love of my life is currently in the army and won't be back for a while...so seeing this at midnight to like 3am brings me hope, joy, and sadness.

in three days i go to see my brother graduate from bct. he left right before thanksgiving and came back during christmas for 19 days. we're super close in age [i'm two years younger than him] so we're really close. i hope i don't cry when i see him at graduation lol

Here in England when we return we normally hit the pub straight away then go home a few days after, all the mates see us before family do 😅
When I came home from being deployed for Desert Storm, we had a day before beginning our deactivation. My LT dropped me off at the local mall. I decided to take a taxi home to surprise my family. They had no idea I was back. The look on my father's face when he saw me told me everything.

my mom was away for 7 years for his work and visited us but left again after 2monhts because she have a job again
This is very hard for me to watch as my cousin is currently serving in the Marines. She was sent to Fuji, Japan in early 2021 but was sent home as they had no position for her. So she was stationed in North Carolina, USA. While that happened, she came out as lesbian and told us that she had seceretly gotten married to her wife, who had a son from a previous relationship. My family is super religious, Christian to be exact. Her father is a pastor as well, here in Florida. After she shared this with us, my entire family cut her off, and I haven't seen her in over 2 years. I was somewhat close with her, and loved her dearly. I miss her every day, and wish that she would come home and that I could see her. It really hurts me that this happened. But I am proud of her for serving our country.

I've never been in the military so I certainly can't compare with these stories (nor do I want to honestly), but I want to share a story:
Thanksgiving 2019. I had just gotten a new job that kept me traveling a LOT and far from home a LOT. A while before Thanksgiving I had asked my boss for permission to go home for Thanksgiving. He said yes. Immediately afterwards I called my family and told them I wasn't going to be able to make it home for the holidays. I even faked being p!$$ed off about it to the point anytime they or I contacted one another leading up to that Thanksgiving I made a point to fake complain and rage about not being able to get home. Then I contacted my sisters in secret and told them I was coming but to keep it quiet. Seeing as this would be basically the last Thanksgiving (as far as we knew) that we would all be living in close proximity to each other we wanted to make it special. So the night before Thanksgiving I spent... 18 hours riding a bus to get back to my hometown. I didn't sleep a wink the whole ride so the second I got there I was exhausted. They took me to my sister's new house and I slept for a couple hours before we drove to where we would have Thanksgiving dinner with the rest of my family. I made a point to duck down and hide as we pulled up. My family was outside waiting for my sisters and nephew to arrive. They pull over and start getting out and then I got out the other side, stood up straight and yelled out "Hey! What's a guy gotta do to get a beer around here?" Immediately my mother started tearing up as she realized I was there and hugged me. My dad laughed and started calling people to tell them what I did. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner together as a whole family. To this day anytime I think about that it makes me smile.
I will vote in the next elections to stopping the useless wars and separation of these precious American families.
