Hank's the man. I was born in 1958 and Hank and the Shadows is the reason I too wanted to learn guitar. Thanks Hank. Thanks too to the person sharing this video.
Hank and the Shadows were my first ever favourite band in the 60's. The guitar sound was totally unique and set me on my path of musical discovery. The Beatles then effectively opened up my musical universe.
I started playing guitar after listening to Hank in 1966, and used the tremelo bar right from the start, watching how he did it. I didn't even know there was another way until much later. But only Hank Marvin got the unique sound he's famous for.
WHEN THIS E.F.T.P.QUAD; UNIT WAS READY TO GO PUBLIC, I DEMONSTRATED THIS UNIT MYSELF WITH CHARLIE HALL AT THE NATIONAL MUSIC SHOW AT WEMBLEY ,.. HANK HEARD IT THERE, ARRANGED A MEET FOR A PRIVATE DEMO . HE LIKED IT AND TOOK TWO QUADS; BACK HOME WITH HIM TO PERTH AUSTRALIA...AND THE REST IS HISTORY...
Fascinating DVD - it really goes to show that there is no such thing as 'THE' Hank Marvin sound which so many guitarists search for and assume that they can duplicate it with a single group of settings.
The first echo I can emulate ( almost ) with 2 delay pedals but the second one.....( nonono)but it's a fun game to be fooling around with poor man's equipment and trying to emulate the sound of this great master ! Thanks Mr Marvin for those tips...
For the 2nd echo, you need 4 delays. (That how I set it up.) 1st delay: 100 ms. FB. 25%. Level, 20% find the sweet spot.) 2nd delay: 200 ms. FB. 20%. Level. 20-30% (find the sweet spot 3rd delay: 280 ms. FB. 40% level. 30%. (Find sweet spot) 4th delay: 360 ms. FB 45%. Level. 40% (find sweet spot). You probably can ignore the 2nd delay and just turn up the FB on the 1st delay to about 60%. Hope this helps :)

As Hank explains in this clip he used a Meazzi tape echo on those early hits. Meazzi was an Italian manufacturer, as was Binson, but they came from different factories. I guess it's like Bruce Welch stated: "There are now people who know more about the Shadows than Hank and me........"
working them out from this video.. get's these delay times, if you want to make up your own accurate Hank Marvin delay patches.. be sure to play on the bridge pickup, and pick close to the neck. use lots of clean gain, and pick very very gently. I see people adding reverb and stacks of feedback to their settings, which is simply not the case. After watching this i bought an echo pedal to use with my strat, Wounderful land and apache sound great now. The echo certainly give the music a dimension. I have listened to the shadows since i was four at 36 it is great to learn to play the shadows tracks.
i have an epiphone Wildkat electric that has a bigsby vibrato. i can thank hank marvin for getting me to work with my bigsby and man a lot of things opened up on the guitar
Why don’t they have an interviewer who shows interest? I’m so fascinated and thankful Hank would talk in such detail and even give the secrets! The other guy is like, “That’s nice.”
Really enjoyed this one and it was nice to hear Hank talking about how the classic tones like Apache were created. Was also interesting to hear about the software for the Q2 which is the EFTP programme created by Charlie Hall which I use on my Zoom G2.1Nu pedal. It is really great to use and you get such wonderful tone every time without having to muck about trying to set the delay times for seperate tunes which can be frustrating.
I never knew that Hank ended up in the States? I wonder how long he has been here? Seems to have picked up quite a bit of the accent. I have been here 30 years, but as far as I know my accent hasn't changed and that's even being married an American girl!
@enzo2enzo2enzo Do you suppose it helped David Gilmour that he had a model, such as Hank Marvin? I don't mean to denigrate David Gilmour at all. He's absolutely one of my favorites. But it's a lot easier to follow someone else's example, even if you're "perfecting" a particular sound.
@isitrealgood hank mite have been before David Gilmour, but it does NOT mean he matches his skill with echoing or extending a note to heights with such a fluid gentle touch... Hank was a pioneer, Gilmour PERFECTED it! end of story
To my knowledge, Hank doesn't live in the States! Nobody know him here. And yes, Hank made mistakes and still make some today. It's normal. Listen to the apache's gallop on stage and you will hear he missed the beginning of the gallop.

I was born in late 1949 but what you have said also applies to me. I own two quad 2’s. They are marvellous.
HBM is the master of echo and reverb ! But, his superb playing is full of sensibility and so much expressive . Thanks Mr Hank Marvin !
Hank's tone is probably one of the greatest sounds ever from a Strat

He really is, the Bollocks!!! King Guitar!!!!
Hank is a guitar genius - all those interesting, original guitar licks in ordinary rock`n `roll songs.
The man knows his echo and reverb!
Its his skill with the whammy bar plus he volume swells a lot with his pinky or small finger amazing guitarist

Great infomation about echo from Hank Marvin. Great channel.
That Wonderful Land sound just blows me away!!!
Yeah, to me too. It's like a gallop!
After watching this i bought an echo pedal to use with my strat, Wounderful land and apache sound great now. The echo certainly give the music a dimension. I have listened to the shadows since i was four at 36 it is great to learn to play the shadows tracks.
He's been living in Perth, Australia for close to 20 years now.
Hank's amazing,
but that host is the master of understatement.
I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING TO PLAY THE STRAT AS GOOD AS HANK !!! Thanks for posting this !!!
I doubt you would give a hand, haha.
i have an epiphone Wildkat electric that has a bigsby vibrato. i can thank hank marvin for getting me to work with my bigsby and man a lot of things opened up on the guitar
The Best guitarist in the World, bec.of the Feelings,Dynamics, delivery,Expressions complete,
Yes, you are right. He had a house on the beach and few years ago he moved to a luxury apartment in Perth, He is closer to his studio 'NIVRAM'

Great Echo Sound, from Jun and Imee here in the Phils.
Such precise playing. You can't make mistakes with that amount of echo - it woyld sound terrible.
Fantastic

nice to hear what Hank's echo really is ... :)
Great Hank!
It depends on what kind of tone you like. People are different, you know…
He doesn't make a mistake, because 40 years ago you couldn't afford to make a mistake. Tape was very expensive.
APACHE VSSE is the best Echo machine to play Shadows tunes
great video
I wonder if he preferred the Burns, Baldwins, or Fenders?
And today, the EFTP are gone. Replaced by the new Apache VSEE rack from ShadowsGuitares that give you the real old shadows sound.
big glasses are cool =D
Hank let down Charlie Hall and his EFTP for a TVS3 and a JMI .He also use new Kinman pick ups and soon, he will use the Apache VSEE.
Actually sounds better than The Ventures!
I never knew that Hank ended up in the States? I wonder how long he has been here? Seems to have picked up quite a bit of the accent. I have been here 30 years, but as far as I know my accent hasn't changed and that's even being married an American girl!
i totally agree !!!!
The Shadows
Hank is great...that host sounds like he needs some sleep
Hanks sounds like lennon
@razzamanaz79 Consider that Hank was doing this a good 10 years, at least, before David Gilmour started playing professionally.
Gilmour admits his influence totally. Check the recent BBC doc about The Shadows. Also Pete Towshend and Brian May appear.
i get that sound, the apache one, with two delay pedals ;) is not the same , bit it does the job
Super super super:):)

interesting...
@Rottmad
but it is childlishly simple, that's the only thing that doesn't appeal to me. But he's a real gentelmen
2:19 _O_
Oh yeah
@boonehawks my dad is in bruce welches shadows
What gauge strings does hank use?
Hank used a binson on the shadows early recordings, didn't sound anything like what he is demonstrating.
In the mid to late 60s he used it. In the late 50s to mid 60s he used a meazzi echomatic
Where is this from?
Is there a dvd?
Mostrar pedales.❤❤
Needs more cow bell .
What delay unit is using here? His delay times vary on each repeat! It's crazy!!
What DVD is this?
Are they dotted eighth note delays?
No.
@isitrealgood hank mite have been before David Gilmour, but it does NOT mean he matches his skill with echoing or extending a note to heights with such a fluid gentle touch...
Hank was a pioneer, Gilmour PERFECTED it! end of story
I use a Marshall MG 250 dfx and get the same sound with no pedals , Marshall don't make it any more shame
bfg
Qué? Jaja
