    Thank you for this. You reminded me how magical playing with barbies in the early 2000’s was. I had Barbie! And she was my favorite from all my other Barbies I loved her face and her golden hair, I also loved Charmed as a kid so 🩷🔮

    If Barbie’s pants are pleather, that means they’ll rot

    • @CollectandCraft
      @CollectandCraft  2 года назад

      Leather rots, pleather doesn’t. Faux leather (pleather) is made from a plastic base and is then treated with wax, dye or polyurethane to create the colour and texture. But it’s possible the pants are actually vinyl, I’m not sure. I know, for sure, they’re not leather though, which does rot and break down over a period of about 50 years if not well maintained.

      @@CollectandCraft what about the faux leather that rots on other Barbie dolls?

    • @CollectandCraft
      @CollectandCraft  2 года назад

      @@brianaguilar8283 Which dolls have you seen faux leather rot? There are different kinds of faux leather, usually treated with different materials, but for the most part they hold up well. Old rubber tends to crack and degrade kind of like leather, so it’s possible some vintage Barbie clothes have been treated with a rubber-like material. I know the 80s Barbie and the Rockers outfits have not held up well over time. I don’t know what materials those are made of, however. They’re made to look like faux leather, but they’re a much thinner and frailer material, but I haven’t been able to find much information of what that material consists of.

      @@brianaguilar8283 I used to have a vintage Harley Davidson Ken with leather jacket and his was in pretty good condition, so I have no idea why there would be rotting for some of these dolls and not others. It could be a matter of elements (i.e. amount of sunlight, humidity, personal care, etc.). I have had faux leather accessories from different vintage Barbies that haven’t rotted per se, but have a sticky layer, more than likely from the plastic chemical they were coated with, which may be the case for those other dolls. A lot of times that break down has a lot to do with how the dolls are cared for and stored. But it’s very difficult to find info on what these materials are. The more digging I try to do, the more I find that Mattel hasn’t shared much info on materials or chemicals used in the creation of Barbies over the years. However, I did find this article, which I thought had some good insights. Ultimately, my response is, I really can’t say for sure, but I can say that these pleather or vinyl pants on the Secret Spells Barbie have held up very well. www.designlife-cycle.com/barbie-dolls
