〈童年的山丘〉一詩出自於威爾斯詩人迪倫．湯瑪斯（DylanThomas,1914‑1956）的詩集《Deaths And Entrances》中的最後一首詩。本詩分爲六節、每節各九句，使用行內半韻（internal half rhymes）與全韻（full rhymes），亦使用尾韻（end rhymes）。全詩始自彷彿記憶中童年田園生活的景象，從中萃取出必要的顏色、物件，並以這些素材來描摹時間此一超乎物外存在。從生的喜悦講到死的廣袤，點出伊甸般的天真，也暗示現實的不堪。爲迪倫．湯瑪斯的代表作品。
作曲家約翰．柯瑞里亞諾（John Corigliano, 1938‑）誕生於紐約市的音樂世家，於哥倫比亞大學攻讀作曲並曾於伯恩斯坦麾下擔任助理指揮。柯瑞格里亞諾的作品充滿畫面與戲劇性，擅長用和弦的顏色變化營造氛圍，除了備受好評的純音樂作品外，其爲電影《紅色小提琴》（The Red Violin）所做的配樂亦贏得奧斯卡最佳電影配樂。柯瑞格里亞諾對於詩人迪倫．湯瑪斯的詩作多有所感，因此於1960‑1976間創作了一組曲名爲《迪倫．湯瑪斯三部曲》（A Dylan Thomas Triology）的作品。其中〈童年的山丘〉極受柯瑞格里亞諾的重視，對於該詩一再推敲，反覆修訂。
本次演出所採用的編制爲混聲合唱團、次女高音獨唱、鋼琴，與弦樂。整曲大致可分三段，第一段起始可聽見器樂旋律如風吹拂草地，深綠淺綠漸次展開，而後合唱團各部依序進入，將回憶中的農莊景色印象式地妝點起來。農村所用的樸拙的號角聲與節奏形式，都被巧妙地安插在樂句裡面。聲響的顏色慢慢堆疊、越發濃郁，構成一幅田野欣欣向榮的意象。而後次女高音獨唱帶入第二段，唱出田野中空氣的模樣，夜的模樣，破曉的模樣，彷彿是吟遊詩人的吟哦，又是聲樂家的頌歎。最後主題再現，雖是與第一段相似的旋律，但合唱團不再描摹景色，而是僅指示出景色更迭後不變的⾎念與感受。在這樣純粹的感受中，我們用音樂講述時間的意志是怎樣選擇並且引領萬物，以及在這絕對意志的包圍下，一個詩人如何坦然接受並邁向死亡。至此突然完全安靜，而後自最低聲部開始堆疊，終於形成一個永恆而淡泊的和弦，將此曲導向終結。
Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs

And then to awake, and the farm, like a wanderer white

Shining, it was Adam and maiden,

The sky gathered again

So it must have been after the birth of the simple light
