Probably the most important feature for me personally. I'm fine with the quest 2's res and 80hz, but the binocular vision I get from it breaks my immersion more than anything
the most important of all! and it makes me sad that there is no progress in this regard. all new vr headsets still have such small fov after so many years. actually we should be at almost the entire angle of view....actually
Resolutions and fov are getting so good we really need to be using eye tracking for the dynamic foveated rendering. Specially with how pricy graphics cards are getting
As long as the eye tracking data isn't collected and sold to other countries, when VR set become commonplace enough I can see this happening in web 3.0 or 4.0
The comfort part really depends. Unless you squeeze the strap really hard around your head it won't hold and keep wobblign. And even if you squeeze it, it's not going to be flawless experience. The glare is really bad if you use anything else but the thinnest face pad. And people with low IPD can forget about using this headset. There are a few with face shape, eye balls depth compatible enough with low IPD but mostly anyone with IPD below 64,5 will find themselves not being able to fully set this headset up for clear view/no eye strain. That's mostly because the physical IPD wheel is giving a false number. The real distance between the middle of the lenses/sweet spot is 64,5-74,5. One can easily measure that themselves. While IPD adjustment in the software may help and allievate some issues, it's still software adjustment and the sweet spot won't match your eyes when it comes to the lenses settings. Not only that it is advised to use Near IPD value which is 3mm lower than the actual Far IPD that most people measure and use. That again makes it even less compatible with many users. Even if you try to pull your eyes further from the lenses to get some better match for the sweet spot since the centers are so far away, you might then experience that glare and drastic decrease in sweet spot. There are countless of reports where people thought they had IPD correct because image roughly looked clear but after an hour the eye strain and headaches kicked in. It's usually those people that are on the edge of compatibility. It creates false assumption that it works for that person until reality kicks in after a while. People who have compatible IPD won't have issues setting it both hardware and software using the methods listed by community of Pimax. The image is amazing and that's the fact. FOV looks great too no doubt. However for all the hassle and it's price, the comfort and IPD issues don't seem like something worth buying. Yes you can 3d print some adapters and get custom headstraps for comfort but I would except such things to be required in cheap headsets like Quest not over 1000$ headset. If it works for the person that bought it - that's great. It is indeed the best one can get when it comes to FOV+picture quality combo. Otherwise if it's going to be barely all right it doesn't feel like a good buy. Pimax Crystal looks way better in comparison. It won't have huge FOV but if you can get the lenses quite close to the eyes the 125 horizontal should be enough to allievate "black bars"/"binoculars" issue. It's not often that one actually looks so hard to the left or right to see the black bars on 125 fov. Honestly I feel already quite okay FOV wise with Valve Index FOV. So Crystal would be a cherry on the top with it's pixel perfect clarity.
I've had an 8KX for some time now, using the old Vive light houses, and Index controllers, running a RTX2080. I think it is fantastic, takes a bit to set up but once you get it sorted it is great. I have a large IPD, 75mm, so it is hard to find a headset the I can use. The 8KX goes to 70mm manually and has software adjustment to get to 75mm, I find the lenses have a very large focus point and I have not problems focusing. I started with the Vivie and Vive Pro, that went o 74mm IPD, and I've been disappointed with the Vive Pro 2 and HP Reverb G2, only going to 68mm. The Quest is disappointing too as it is just too small for my head. I'm hoping that the future Pimax headsets still cater for over 70mm IPD with software adjustment.
I'm the same - I had few headsets and so far the best IPD was on Oculus DK2, you have convinced me to send back my Vive Pro2 headset as well and go for Pimax 8KX thank you
Thanks for the great review Tyriel. I have several VR headsets I am still having fun with at the moment. I am a SIM racer and have allot of VR racing games. VR headsets I am switching back and forth on are the Oculus Rift S, The HP Reverb G2 V2, and the Valve Index. I do not have any wireless VR - still waiting for the best one since I have mainly STEAM VR games for the tethered headsets. Learning allot from all your VR reviews. 3090(or 3080 12Gb) is minimum GPU for good experience for 8KX and 4090 is very recommended. Trust me, I run VR games with 8KX on 1080Ti, 3090 and 4090 and know it :)
Still getting to grips with my Quest2 mate, I lent on the VR table tennis table last week, fell forwards and head-butted my living room wall. Need a new computer for a proper VR headset like this, but for design work, solidworks/catia/NX to design something and then immerse yourself in a 3D environment with it, be it industrial car design, architectural design or spacecraft, my passion, that gets me way way more excited than games. VR is an amazing tool for creativity and invention.
best combo to me is a thumbstick, AND a trackpad. I actually like that setup from WMR because the trackpad to me is more useful than only having 2 buttons. It's a trackpad, mouse, as well as four buttons UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. I think people are still stuck on playing console games that's why they want buttons.
While I love the idea of a 200+ degree FOV, I still wouldn't want this headset especially at this price point. If Pimax comes out with a version sporting pancake lenses, OLED displays and inside-out tracking, this would look far more enticing.
That’s the Crystal, coming out next month. No pancake lenses (they say pancake lenses reduce the brightness by 85%), but it does has aspheric lenses and is as sharp as the Aero.
You will have to wait a little longer for your wish to come true .. their 12K VR Headset will be released 2023 ( probably 3rd or 4th quarter ) It will have 200 degree FOV, and super clear lenses like the Chrystal which is coming out right now in January 2023, no screen door affect, inside out tracking and lighthouse compatible with an extra module ( just like the Chrystal ), it will be wired, but also have an optinal WiGig Module, which will allow wireless gaming. It will be the most advanced VR headset on the market for an affordable price, that´s for sure ! Just be patient and may be Christmas 2023 is the date you will get your desired 3.0 ( or even next level 4.0 ) VR headset.
I'd love all those features and also a model with LOWER resolution per eye. Pushing the amount of pixels the 8KX has is way too tall of an order unless you have a 4090.
@@Skrenja Having the ability to reduce the FOV AND the visual render quality, with the Pimax Settings Sotfware : Pitool, you are able to exactly match the performance of your graphics card with your Pimax Chrstal or 8KX just to your liking. Some day in future, when you upgrade your graphics card to a RTX 4090 ( or may be even later the nvidia 5000 series) you will be able to enjoy full performance.
If you already have SteamVR and controllers (say, you want to upgrade from a Valve Index or the older Vive / Vive Pro...), then the headset by itself is under $700.
@@SpecialOperator Ah, it might have been the 8K+ that I saw for $670. Amazon has the headset today for $900. (I coulda swore I saw it for cheaper during the holiday weekend, though...) Anyway - the point being that being on SteamVR has a $600+ cost for controllers & lighthouses, but the headset can be upgraded from there without the full cost of the kit.
Eye strain with Pimax headsets is really what lets them down. Ik the Cristal seemingly fixed that but the whole battery situation & stuff I don't need on it adding cost & weight. So I can pass till they make a stand alone Version of that headset
Pimax is an intresting company. On one hand they make really great strides in screen and len tech for VR and visual fidelity but on the other hand they try to reinvent controllers despite the industry moving towards 2 sticks, 4 face buttions, triggers and grips as a standard.
Pimax actually tried to make a Index-knuckle style controller but never got it working and had to abandon it. You can see pictures of what it would have looked like if you search for "Pimax Sword Sense". I think they looked badass and if it didn't have the dreaded joystick drift they would have been killer. Sadly, they were not to be.
@@J0n3zH New stuff will be able to use Base station stuff with the lighthouse plate, but yeah, they'll come with basically Q2 controllers. That's alright though.
How are the colours on the Pimax? Essp compared to OG Vive/vs like a Valve Index? I love my index but I really hate the colour quality. Been wanting to switch to a Vive Pro 2 just for that but the headset alone is too costly to justify.
how the heck do you play anything with those controllers? All my headsets have the Oculus controller configuration and, and those make sense... especially when playing Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR. Whisky Tango Fox are those things?
Best headset in the market. The controllers are b tier though. Index with 8kx is the ultimate set up. Controllers would needed the rift analog grip instead of the vive toggle grip. The triggers a have major flinching issue when you light pull them. This is only reason the controllers can't compete with rift controllers as well as the missing button
Great review as always Ty! As im mainly playing dcs ive started to think about pimax bcs of that fov. But that price is a big is a big con haha. Will probably wait for quest 3 or something else new for now :)
Currently I'm still rockin' the badass OG Quest 1 😎 Haha! So personally i would like a bit better in all of the above, BUT, I have been very pleased with this headset bcs of several reasons. First, Dual oled screens! Looks great, just needs slightly higher resolution and better bitrate capability, like quest 2... Second, the fov, which is pretty decent compared to other headsets as far as i know. The problem for me with the quest 2(tried my friends headset) is the single panel setup. I have an IPD of 67, so i want to use the widest ipd setting. But that gave me awful fov, as the screen is not wide enough physically to provide similar fov as the two lower ipd settings! So heads up for that potential Q2 buyers with higher ipd! Wouls be great if you could confirm this Ty, as it was some time ago i tested the quest 2 :) Merry christmas!!
I got the 8KX when I bought the 3090, now I have the 4090 and the 8XK feels like a new HMD because now I can run many games with full details. Playing Dirt 2 with max Details and max FoV is amazing and with the 2080ti, you can’t even get close to the maximum of the 8KX. So for anyone who consider to buy an 8KX, please use it with at least an 4090.
I like the idea of those controller, the fit seems ergonomic and decent with the tracking ring out of the way, but it seems VERY annoying to have less buttons and a trackpad over a stick. I don't really like trackpads in general, and for precise controls I've hated them in the past. Ignoring the trackpad tho (maybe people will disagree with me about the precision of a trackpad vs a stick), I just don't understand the logic of less buttons. You won't be able to make a decent control profile in a lotta games because of that, unless I'm missing something here.
You can configure the trackpads to work as dpads, so usually you use your left trackpad for moving around, then use your right trackpad as a 5-button dpad for turning, then doing whatever other functions you might want. It's a persistent misunderstanding of how trackpads can work that leads people to think its short buttons. The end of the day though, the reason it has only one hardware button (aside from the system button) is because the Vive Wands had only one and these are really just an improved Wand design. Ergonomically they are very comfortable, and the only VR controller where you can actually two-hand a pistol since those tracking rings "link up" together to be very stable. The user-replaceable battery is a nice touch, although battery life is somewhat mediocre they can be hot swapped and charged very fast. The trigger isn't very good and tends to be gittery however. They are "decent" controllers, fairly basic. Their biggest plus is that they don't get drift or any other issues that plague Index Knuckles so you can just use them care-free. I think if they were cheaper, they might have been a bit more popular. I switch between them and my knuckles depending on which game I'm playing and I like them well enough, but I think they could have been a lot better. I'm disappointed Pimax never came out with the "Sword Sense" controllers which would have had Index buttons and joystick. Technically the Swords have finger-tracking like the Index, but Pimax never figured out how to get them to actually work with games since the controllers are detected as Vive Wands.
I have a 2080 Super and I really want something better but GPUs are just too ridiculously expensive right now -- especially in Canada. Even used 30 series cards are still selling for ludicrous amounts here.
I quite liked the feel of the sword controllers but the lack of a, b and x, y buttons is problematic. Grip sensors would have been nice to, but I herd the problem there was actually Steam? I found movement with the track-pad quite intuitive though the position of it wasn't great and I have pretty big hands so it would be even worse for most people. I have a 5KXR driven by a 64Gb WC5900X RTX3090 on an X570 mb. I have the fov set to large but not full, no forced reprojection, with games set to balanced DLSS dissabled. I find it really good but a little more vertical fov would be nice. System runs it well enough though it gets unstable for a good while after many windows updates. Usually go back to my OgQuest then and when that runs consistently well I start using the 5KXR again. Twin 4K panels at the 5K fov would be real nice if they were OLED's but I think I'd need at least a 4090 to run that well.
Technically DLSS3 would be quite a good solution for VR games. UNFORTUNATELY its a 40 series exclusive feature and maybe not well supported in VR games.

@@jamejamevr Thank you for the response and info, I appreciate it!
I was checking out a new vivo xr on newegg and saw this vr. They are about the same price. Would be interesting to see them side by side.
Can you do another video but with 4090?
75hz? no 90 or 120?
Test the pimax Crystal please when it will be available !
✌✌
I tested it in LA last week and it was awesome. Have mine pre-ordered and ships on January 15.
Damn, no sticks.. that SUXXXXXXXXX
The price of this device makes more sense than the price of quest pro
2080ti is not a couple years old. It's over 4 years old!! (Sept 2018 it was released) You really need a new GPU if you want to test these
I have a 2080 Super and I really want something better but GPUs are just too ridiculously expensive right now -- especially in Canada. Even used 30 series cards are still selling for ludicrous amounts here.
not everyone wants to throw thousands at nvidia
@@SkrenjaI have the same gpu as you and your fine just wait a couple years and upgrade be patient like the 2080 is still really good just wait
@@CaptainSpoonsAlot well thats kinda the only way to play at these ridiculous resolutions
need to test pimax crystal :)
@@theriddick Defeats the purpose of using a PC dedicated headset. If you were using a compressed signal with something like wigig maybe? But I think Wigig2 is actually better than than Dp1.4 if I remember rightly. Shame no one can be bothered making a Wigig2 device for us?
@@glenrisk5234 It's too new. Maybe end of 2023 some may be announced. These headsets take years to develop and often isn't easy to just hotswap in parts when you have a fixed price involved. No doubt that newer module costs a fair bit more. OLD stock is just very cheap atm vs newly made stuff due to the increases in costs to manufacture stuff in today's over-complicated world.
i can never play with fernel lenses after seeing the clarity of the edges in pico4.
wonder how my 3080ti with my 12900k Intel and 32 GB of 6000 mhz DDR5 would handle this??
Depends on the game.
I had it for a year with a 3080 and had fun with it alot, but tweaked some stuff, now on the 4090 its crushing it.
CAN'T UNDERSTAND A WORD THIS GUY IS SAYING
Do you speak English? Because yes he has an accent but I can understand him perfectly. Seems more like your problem than his. If you can’t understand someone speaking your own language then go watch someone else’s video.
@@alecmillea4539ur mad (but yea the accent isn't really thick)
@@theredstormer8078 lol nah not mad, I just don’t think the person listening to their own native language should be the one complaining. I’m a native English speaker born in Canada to British parents. I would not dare complain about someone’s English if I didn’t speak their language better than they spoke English.
btw..the vr set is just the start...you need a bas ass computer to really push it...thats 2000 min start...minimum...gives ya a taste
Only 2 years late, but ok..
@tyriel.wood my guess is you are a positive apple user from Italy Yes?
it Would explain how tinkering is not your thing (at least you think apple means less tinkering).
So, what you are saying is that if todays youth (your kids if any) are ok with tinkering, this headset would beat the competition? Just that you dont put the time into understanding the tech? Am i right? (Nothing wrong with it, i just like to know what to listen to).
If not, please explain.
Ps
I am no pimax guy, im a sw engineer that went Pico 3+4 as its the best headset tech on the market (affrodable) meassured in hardware. Sw you can always sideload or acces vis VD :-)
why do you have a 2080 ti? upgrade !!
You need a new gpu
Facts.
I do love my 8 kx, for me the best hmd out there. Its great on a 4090
Hello i order mine today, i have rtx 4080 and ryzen 9. Works all in ultra without problem? With the programe pitool i have enought to set up easy or i need more programmes? How much frames you get? Picture quality? Thanks
after 8 months what do you think of the headset is it worth it?@@andonigameplays9751
I'd never own a VR controller that doesn't have a joystick because trackpads, no matter who makes them, all SUCK for gaming.
Why does no one ever talk about refresh rate lmao?
Where's your Crystal content?
Can you Play gorilla tag on it
The accent i cant stand it im sorry its so irritating ,dont mean to be mean ,i do like that hes a very smart guy though :/
Garbage lens, garbage display.
Pancake lens and oled display >>>>>>>>>>>
I’m the 8th😮

picking mine up from a guy down the street for $300 with 1 lighthouse 2.0 and no controllers. im a sim racer and thats all i ever use vr for, so its perfect. upgrading from a quest 2 and i cant wait for that sweet fov and wider ipd for my fat head.
What a great deal! How are you finding it so far?
@@danceoffAsh it’s wonderful. However, my pc cries when I’m using it. And it’s not a wimpy rig either. Ryzen 5800x and a 3080ti. I’m even struggling with iracing. I can assume I dont have something setup right, but trying to push 2 4K screens and head tracking is always going to be a big ask of a computer. That being said, it does hurt the bridge of my big crooked nose.
@@BenFilley Ahh, I see, I heard that you can try using the 1.25 or 1.5 setting on the Pimax experience and have Steam Resolution set to Auto to ensure that the frames are kept to the desired refresh rate while having decent visuals. Some suggested 50% SS if you're Pi Toolis set to 1.25
@@danceoffAsh I’ll have to look into that
