San Rafael Swell Devil's Racetrack - More Technical than I Wanted

  • This was supposed to be the shortcut. On the map it was the shortest distance to the highway. This morning's trip was supposed to go fast so we could get on the road back across the country. It didn't end up that way. The trail was slow, and technical. Much more technical than I wanted. In fact, had I known what it was going to entail, I wouldn't have gone down this way. There was one spot - let's just say, I puckered... a lot.

    Back in 2017, we ran 5 fullsize trucks (an 2002 Dodge Cummins, 2005 Dodge Cummins w/popup camper, 2016 RAM Power Wagon, 1991 K5 Blazer and my 1978 K10 w/popup camper) over the Devil's Racetrack, although we ran it the opposite direction. Then we took Eva Conover trail out back to I-70 the next day and deeper into the swell South of I-70 for the rest of the week. The Devil's Racetrack definitely keeps your attention for sure. The spot where you whacked the rear bumper is much more challenging to crawl up. There weren't any tree stumps stacked up at that time but there was a baby cow sleeping under a tree right there that kept a watchful eye over all of us as we crawled by lol. A couple of the trucks needed a winch tug up that wall. Fun trail!

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  Год назад +3

      Interesting... I was just thinking perhaps it would be easier going the opposite direction. Honestly, if I hadn't been rusty, in a new truck and had a spotter, I likely could have managed that decent in a much more controlled fashion, like I prefer to do... nice and slow... but when I started to tip to the driver, I panicked and let go of the braking to let gravity pull me down, rolling on the tires, not on the axis. Obviously the result was a dramatic bang on the bar work.

    • @DirtyLarry2
      @DirtyLarry2 Год назад +1

We thankfully turned around and went back up the east side to the wedge and had a great rest of the trip :)

    i have a question about your Aev’s suspensions. What are the chances to lower them so it sits lower near the fenders?

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  8 месяцев назад +1

      Do you mean lower as in a lower ride height? Or like with airbags or something? Crazy enough - the suspension lift is only 3 inches. The rest of the ground clearance comes from the larger tires. The fender cut to accommodate larger fenders allow the 40’s to clear.

    • @qiqi7226
      @qiqi7226 7 месяцев назад

      @@SwellRunner i am located in Canada where there is no AEV distributor in my area. I am thinking of ordering the xl parts with highmark fender flares, but to go with 37 tires as it’s easier to find more tire options, but I wish it could sit a bit lower. As I think the stance looks better. lol

    Just think back how far you have come (literally) since that little kiss on the rear corner in the 4runner back here in Georgia all those years ago... Maybe that should be on your calendar- to redo some of those first trips in the AEV? Having a Power Wagon myself, it's very interesting to see some of the bigger rigs handling obstacles, especially in the east where trails don't always have those epic views and are a bit tighter.

    • @SwellRunner

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  Год назад +2

      SxS's are almost cheating! haha. They're so much fun. I'd like to do some serious trails in one that's running some large tires and has a lot of flex some day. Would be fun to walk over things that are otherwise super tricky.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  Год назад +1

      haha. Right on. I'd bet if I had Kevin with me to spot (he's quite the expert), that one tough spot would have been much better. I'd do it again. And probably going up, vs down would be easier as well.

    • @donleamon8653
      @donleamon8653 Год назад

      ruclips.net/video/eykmxcwz9J8/видео.html - ahh seems like yesterday. Power Wagon no issue. With trailer too, no. I is not a real rewarding trail IMHO and after being on it twice. Junipers get tight with a FWC in the bed too as I remember. Regardless, if you're going to due trails like this in the So. Ut area, I'd have some sliders and rear corner protection on a PW regardless of tire size, and be prepared to wack your front radius arms. Just make them planned as much as possible.
