Thank you John you’ve served so many generations of Yankees fans and you were truly legendary. It was truly great to see Kay talk about you during the game and that call knowing that you were able to hang it up by your own will.

I was 16 1/2 years old listening to the game on a small radio with aluminum foil on the end of the antenna. Yankees down by one run, bottom of the ninth. Ricky Henderson walked, and Don Mattingly hit a walk-off home run. First time I heard John Sterling's home run call. I have never stopped listening since, until now.
Thank you, John, for an illustrious career. I hope you have a peaceful retirement. So many of us will miss you dearly.

I grew up a Red Sox ,but loved the Mantle, Maris, Ford, Blanchard, Tresh teams. Etc.Etc. I did nothing but listen to Mr. Sterling when I was consistently travelling through Vermont and Maine. Listening to John made my trips thru the Green Mountains , during the last 12 years, or along the Coast, memorable. Win or lose, I loved listening , on a Sat. or Sunday, to John . It was July or August. , It was summer, it was green, it was sunny and warm, It was Vermont, Never a dull moment. I was listening to John Sterling, from Brattleboro to Stowe. Thank you my friend. I will miss your great calls. Gallagher.

I have great memories of listening to many great Yankee announcers over the years. John is a colorful announcer that's for sure and deserves to enjoy his retirement. I remember back in the 1980's on many summer nights listening to Phil Rizzuto and Bill White on a transistor radio. I can even remember nights when a thunderstorm would be in the area and every now and then hearing the static from the lightning in the radio.

I'm 63......I remember the summer of '73....and his sports talk show on WMCA where he would talk down to the dolts with their incessant requests to know when Ron Blomberg or Elliot Maddox would be back from injury or the progress in the construction of the new Yankee Stadium to the excitement of the trade that brought Micky Rivers and Ed Figueroa to the Yankees to his amazing play by play of the New York Islanders, " Hart...to Potvin, Denny back to Hart....Hart has a shot....GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!"
His play by play of the ABA Nets when Dr. J. led them to a championship to his eventual call of 5 championships for Yankees. That's pretty darned good. Finally, Sterling finally tells himself as his used to tell his callers when he had enough...."give it a rest!" Well deserved John. You were not only the soundtrack of the Yankees. You were the sports soundtrack of my youth!
