ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 29, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

Well, a lot of German women also just don't like valentine's day. To many of us, this is an american capitalist holiday perverting love into consumerism and while that sounds very radical, it really is a common view. I think it's because since 1945, the usa have always been in Germany, using our country as a base for warfare our country was forbidden from even being able to. Theoretically, we are free but if you live in the american occupation zone, it all feels like being colonized by the us, being able to vote but regardless of that, we get what the us decides to be our future without a single german being involved in the planning. Amongst that, allowing an american holiday to get into the last space we still had kept to ourselves, our lovelifes - why would anyone have let that happen? In München, you know the amis as mostly tourists I guess but in Wiesbaden, they are the armed occupying forces that we were afraid of openly speaking about. After moving to SH, it took me five years to even understand that I am allowed to say that I dislike the us military occupying by home town. I am still afraid whenever I write things like this that the CIA might kidnap and torture me until I forget that I ever doubted the perfection of our "american friends"... So far, it hasn't happened and I pray it won't. But really, the things they did to us over generation while keeping everyone convinced that speaking up would be our death - it's evil in ways that almost nobody can imagine. Trauma based mind control they call it. They should rather call it soulkiller zombification. I think I might be saying too much but let's hope that as a diagnosed crazy in Northern Germany, I will get away with as much...

@@476f7474 The U.S. wasn't the only ones to occupy space in Germany after WW2. Of course, this all came about because the Germans let that maniac, HITLER, run amock, forcing others from around the world to step in! I have heard the stories of how so many Germans didn't even know what was really going on, but the Allied Forces were not forgiving to the Germans, as Hitler's entire rise was seen to be the fault of the Germans.
I spent around 7 years of my life in Germany. I know that many Americans disrespect the German space, but not everyone did. A new culture was formed, one that saw many Germans and American collaborate in a way of life. I loved my time there. I hate that you still see the American presence as a hostile force, even though a majority of the American forces have actually left Germany.
The Americans are not there to take over Europe. We are there because if a war pops off, having a presence already in theatre may save many lives.

Agreed. I thought the same thing, with regard to the "U.S. military in Germany" video. Feli said she didn't have much interaction with soldiers, but she still presented an in-depth and interesting summary of the history and current state of affairs. Feli also has a remarkable ability to celebrate factoids because they are intrinsically interesting, rather than suggesting anything about whether a given situation is good or bad. In today's political climate, that's an amazing gift.

Speaking as an American man (age 72) let me suggest that married men will get flowers or chocolates for our wives. Sometimes a gift too. If one forgets, that would be close to forgetting an anniversary or a birthday. When I was younger, and my son was still home, I would get him candy too.

I read that in Luxembourg they have Pretzel Sunday (‘Bretzelsonndeg) , it is a celebration of love taking place on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, a man should offer a pretzel to his sweetheart as a token of his love. If the woman reciprocates the feelings, she will in return offer him an egg on Easter day.

We keep it very, very low-key with Valentine's Day in our (German) family. My adult children will get something sweet, my husband as well because he's a total sweet tooth. That's about it. Nothing over the top, nothing that would involve spending an awful lot of money, just a little gesture that speaks of the love we share as a family. We also consider it mainly a move of the consumer goods industry to make money and increase their profits.

I agree with you Feli. Valentines Day is a good opportunity to express your appreciation towards others. As, yes it can be done any other day, but it is a calendar event already to remind people to take a moment out to appreciate others. Just like all calendar dates to give people a pause in thought and routine to acknowledge a passing of time for specific events and or making time for specific moments. It has been commercialized to death for $, but that is not uncommon for any date to increase an excuse to spend or get others to buy.

Valentines Day had multiple conotations based on my age. In grade school, I dreaded having to make the cards and write my name for 30 classmates. That time could have been better spent playing outside with my friends! In Jr High, it was a very stressful time as we selectively gave a Valentine’s card to that secret special someone, hoping they may give a card back. We also had to deal with other friends who would tease you non stop if they found out you got a card from a “girl”. Things settled down in High School, where giving or receiving a card was a convenient way of professing our teenage love for each other. Now, after 50 years of marriage, it is a great time to get to eat chocolate and go out for a nice dinner. Hope everyone has a nice day!

Giving love, sharing love is always nice, especially in this day and age, love for one another should be given much greater importance again. Whether I personally need a special day to remind me of that, I don't actually think, it matters a lot to me It's more fun to surprise the people around me on other days when they don't necessarily expect it because it's said and written everywhere. Of course there's always time for a little surprise, even on this day, but it's celebrated on a different day and on other days.

When I was a kid in *public* school in California in the 1950s, we made Valentine's Day cards during class time. I think it was justified as being an art project. I think the cards were distributed randomly between the boys and girls, since most of us were too young to care about the opposite sex in a romantic way. My late wife (56 yrs) and I rarely bought each other gifts or cards for Valentine's Day. Usually we went out to dinner.

I am an Ukrainian, living in Vienna. I would say, in Austria Valentine's day is far more celebrated than in Ukraine, even long before the war.
In Ukraine only young couples would celebrate by going to the club to dance, there would be gift exchange as well.
Yesterday, on the 14.02. I noticed how overcrowded U-Bahn in Vienna was and the restaurants were prebooked and overpacked too.
This year I got a beautiful black orchid as a gift, I named her Feli. Please, don't get offended ❤️

As you mentioned in your other social media, this Valentine's Day fell on Ash Wednesday. Because in the Catholic Church Ash Weds. is supposed to be a day of fasting & abstinence at the start of Lent (remember the decadence of Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday?), the confluence of the 2 days was a real issue when I was a kid. It was always a pain (and we would probably delay Valentine candy until Thursday).

Feli, thank you for your wonderful videos. My Mother is German and also loves your videos.
I grew-up in California; but have lived in seven (7) states. And an odd thing I noticed when we moved to Michigan is that many people in the Midwest also celebrate another love-related occasion called “Sweetest Day” in October.
I asked several friends and co-workers why they have a second Valentine’s Day type of holiday? Most told me it was invented by the greeting card companies.
Since you live off-and-on in Ohio, have you come across this yet?

Hi Feli. I am a thrid generation German-American. My middle name is Valentine, it was my grandfather's frist name. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with Valentine's Day as he was born in the late 1800s and his parent emigrated from Germany in 1880.

"Valentin" is still a quite popular German first name for a boy. I think especially in Southern Germany.

I‘m a German living in the US and being in my fifties I grew up in Germany when Valentines wasn’t a big deal. So I don’t do much here, other than ea good excuse to have a chocolaty dessert or chocolate candy. I also feel like some regions in Germany have “lovers” traditions anyway at different times of the year. For example in the Rhineland, guys put a Maibaum, a small birch tree decorated with streamers, at their crushes’ or girlfriend’s house/window in the night before May 1st.

When my brother was going to propose to his wife he was advised not to give her the ring on her birthday, as he had planned, because the ring was an heirloom. He was advised that if it is given on a day where gifts are normally given that it could be considered a gift, not an engagement ring. If the marriage did not happen, she could claim it as so, and it would be harder for him to reclaim the ring. The only exception to this legality is Valentine's Day.

This is the first time I ever heard of "Galentine's Day." I looked it up on Wikipedia and not only did I learn that it's supposed to be on February 13th and that it's supposed to celebrate women's friendship, I also learned that it was invented by Michael Schur, who was a writer for the television show _Parks and Recreation._ Therefore, Galentine's Day can't be any more that fifteen years old at the most.

When I (a Boomer) was a child, until I was maybe 12 years old, nobody in Germany had really ever heard of Valentine's Day. Then there came a concerted effort by flower merchants' associations and the likes of Ferrero (Mon Chéri, and later Nutella and Kinder chocolate) to turn it into a new event for raising sales of flowers and sweets. My impression is that today the perception and acceptance of Valentine's Day in Germany is far lower than it was in the 70s and 80s. Of course, at least for Germany, Halloween and the much more recent rise of "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" sales (in the absence of Thanksgiving as a pretense for having a Black Friday in the first place) are even worse in their role as events designed to hype unnecessary consumption. The Super Bowl seems poised to become the next one, with basically nobody over here even knowing the rules of American football.

Hello Feli. I hope you and your boyfriend had a good Valentine's Day.
I used the opportunity to send a Valentine's card, many years back in UK, to try to see if a fellow student, from another European country, who others had pointed out obviously liked me, was interested in being more than friends. She was surprised at the card, which was simple (not too much which would have been creepy) and said it was more a thing for kids in her country. I had to go through the "just friends" talk and hearing that my suspicion of a boyfriend back home was correct.
It was some years before I met my current girlfriend, who has had many cards from me now.
For some unknown reason, at New Year, RUclips sent me several suggested videos in the language of the friend in question.
Some years back I had put into Google the names of people I thought could have become famous. The first person I met at university had just become an MP and was knighted last year. The professor from the same country as my female friend had been a government advisor back in their country. When I put in the name of the old Valentine at New Year, reminded by the videos, she appeared, with a note that she had retired.
I watched a video you did about dating across borders.
I am glad your relationship worked out, but it is as well to be cautious as different cultures have different expectations. I found this out in time to cancel the planned date years back.
I had been out with a girl from France, who was half Spanish, the previous year and the girl I dated next turned out to have Italian parentage, but there was no apparent misunderstanding in those cases.
Years go quicker and quicker, as you get older. Make the most of them, while you are young. I sometimes wish I met my girlfriend sooner, but she is a bit younger than me, so we would probably not have got on. She says I tamed her, but in truth I had partied through my twenties myself, thinking I had "missed the bus", though not the Greyhounds I toured US on. Fellow Europeans who have not been, but criticise, often strike me as obviously misunderstanding how welcoming most folk in US are.
I helped a German couple on holiday in Scotland, because I know "ein Bisschen" German, but they had old East German style anti US views, which I told them I objected to, having had nothing but good experiences.

I use it as an excuse to have a date with my Fiancée. I don't know if she sees it as important but it is a nice day so show her how much I love her. She lives in another country, so it just makes a day we can plan a date for. And to the Germans, there is also an unofficial holiday that is apparently on the same date for those who can not find a romantic partner or just don't care to, called: "Black Day" apparently it black day is also a thing in east asian countries. In Japan, Valentines Day is typically where girls give a gift to guys, and a week later, there is White Day, where the guys are supposed to reciprocate with something of increased cost or value. Or the other way around where guys give to girls and the girls are supposed to reciprocate. It has been a while since I looked at the specifics.

Valentines here in Norway was celebrated in the 1930s at least, don't know much about the years before, in the 1950s it was more or less forgotten, and it resurfaced in the late 1980s, then with an American taste. som people tell me that the earlier tradition was British, don't know, but I found a few songs about Valentine in Norwegian from the 1920s
