i just did this method, i used colored scented candels I had in the home to add color, also found that usung the warmer burner on my coffee pot was the perfect temp to melt the vasoline and keep it liquidfied without burning it

Food dye isn't soluble in wax of course, but good instructions nonetheless.
have you tried to use wax only? I guess it's the same result

Use crayons to color the wax, remember water and wax don’t mix.
