- Very odd commercial here featuring comic strip and cartoon characters "The Captain and The Kids" which briefly had a run in the late 30's. Why the PB people felt they needed to rescecitate these cartoon characters, I'll never know.
When Hans takes the 2nd pie another just shows up out of nowhere.
They forgot to remove that cel.
Well they're German, so obviously they hold Ph.Ds in astrophysics and manipulated the time-space continuum.
;)
that is an error they forgot to repaint the backgrounds
That’s what I saw
My husband loved this commercial as a kid. I love and miss you Jeff. ♥

They got free from indigestion but not from a spanking. Oh my...
0:43 Whooping Scene Or Child Abuse
Hans: Well We Didn’t Got An Spanking
Fritz: But We Did Got The Pie
Fat Captain: Smart Alecks!
Hans & Fritz: (Yelling In Pain)
Fat Old Inspector: Now You Get Some Us Medicine !!!!
Fat Mexican Mother: There’s all kinds Of Medicine For The Kids.
Old inspector and the caption are NOT *FAT*
And it's a not a *MEXICAN MOTHER*
In fairness, the comic strip was always this way.
WHAT ?????
All the characters are German, including the mother.
I love vintage commercials
I always loved this commercial and was amazed to find it still circulating. We would laugh and imitate the characters! Never perceived it as “odd”, just entertaining.
That's what we had.
Showing kids getting spanked on TV is now illegal 😂😂😂
A.M .C.C. Or it would just create a lot of attention. I still see snoopy come home on TV sometimes.
Technically there's two separate strips at the time this ad was made. The strip itself known as "The Captain and the Kids" was what Rudolf Dirks made after leaving King Features and getting to do another strip with his same characters while The Katzenjammer Kids was still being published by another author for KFS (CatK was through UFS). The second strip lasted until 1979.
I saw this ad many years ago, but I didn't find out until years later that the characters in it were from a comic strip.
Probably wasn't in your paper.
Did you know the comic lasted over 100 years as well?
Originally seen in 1968.
oh if it came a year later i would have said nice

Your stomach wouldn’t feel so good, either, if you’d just eaten a whole pie.
To spuzz: I think I know why they chose these vintage characters and this style for a commercial, the answer lies in your statement above: it came over as an oddity, designed to get viewers' attention. Hans and Fritz were already well known to the older crowd, a whiff of nostalgia, plus the quirky language helped here: I had to listen carefully, their garbled, comic accents weren't easy to understand.
I remember when I first saw this commercial as a kid, it had that sort of "popped out of nowhere" quality, which made you stop and watch it. Also, the strange, vintage weirdness was unlike other animated advertising - nothing like a commercial with the Michelin Man or Trix Rabbit.
+vrikey Vrikey and Spuzz, you're both off the mark. Back when this ad was made, these characters were still very much alive in not only one, but TWO newspaper comic strips: The original titled "The Katzenjammer Kids" (started in 1897 and still running today), and the alternate version which this commercial is based on, "The Captain and the Kids" (started by the original creator Rudolph Dirks in 1914 as the result of a copyright dispute, and running until 1979).
You're probably right, to an extent, that this ad appealed more to the older generation than to young kids by the time it was made. But considering that both the above-mentioned comic strips were still fairly successful in the late 60s, it's very misleading to just describe "The Captain and the Kids" as "having a brief run in the late 30s". That was true of the MGM animated cartoons produced in 1938-39, which for the most part never came close to the appeal and charm of the strip they were based on. But in the comic strip world, Hans and Fritz were huge stars for many decades.

@@SPCFranklinCounty373 , you can learn from lots of places besides school. You can learn from RUclips. For example, just now I learned that @SPCFrannklinCounty373 doesn't like to learn.
I like cartoons like this. I don’t think it would necessarily be racist cause it’s just a film and art altogether and isn’t neccesarily meant to be taken seriously.
Thank you!
Christopher Sobieniak Well back in the day people were more peaceful and you didn’t have people complaining they just enjoyed life.
Seems like today people are more obsessed with saying the right thing instead of doing the right thing.
@@DevinMillarDM That is true.
0:07 Error When They Steal The Pies

Believe it or not, the comic strip is still published in certain papers- here, and overseas (Hy Eisman in the current artist).

And if they want the pie then they want it
You're right. I was referring to this version (the "original" strip, as you've mentioned, is "defunkt").

Older generations were so weird lmao
All problems can be solved with Pepto and violence. Why does everybody have a German accent?
Because they are German.
Makes sense. However, when I go to Germany, I can't find Pepto for sale.@@valerietaylor9615
