Rathbone could do anything! I love it. I did not realize it was Rathbone the first time I saw this movie. People don't appreciate his versatility enough these days because Sherlock Holmes and all those great swashbuckling villains. But the man could act and he loved to do comedy.

The best of the Basil/ Sherlock films. They all are good, and nobody will ever be a better Holmes and Watson than Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

I was shocked as can be, when it turned out that vaudeville performer was actually Basil Rathbone himself!

What perfection! I must say I saw this again one day and I realized only later the singing performer is Basil Rathbone. Great work! Best disguise of Sherlock Holmes ever!

The delightful scene appears in the film without clueing the viewer as to who the entertainer is and when the sequence ends, that fact is startlingly revealed -- also revealing the multiple acting talents of Basil Rathbone. Great film! (Haunting flute music in it too.)

This makes me smile tremendously! It's great to see him being so light-hearted here and singing and dancing! And I do agree that this performance could totally fool you into thinking he's neither Rathbone nor Holmes! Genius! Thanks for posting!

Happy time song, I love watching War veterans get all done up and have a dance around a stage whilst singing something absolutely ridiculous. And Basil, well he's my favorite.

I was so suprised about that funny scene at first watching. Oh I love this early film of the series.

Along with being in the movies, he also starred in the Sherlock Holmes radio show during this same period and would occasionally sing this song.

    MOVIE SPOILER *****
Me too. When I first saw this on TV back in the 50's or so, when this guy turned out to be Holmes in disguise I was blown away. It was the best Holmes disguise EVER. The scene was indelibly printed in my memory as an all time movie clip great. Just look at that body language, I'll bet the imitation is perfect.

It's Basil Rathbone playing Sherlock Holmes in the 1939 film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Even though this film is in Victorian times, and Holmes is singing a song from around the 20's, Basil is so owning the scene I just don't care about the history faux-pas. He rocks!!!

I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my new clip of 1930's cigarette cards of Basil Rathbone, George Formby, Errol Flynn, Gracie Fields, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, and Vivien Leigh.

The Adventures is my favorite of the Rathbone films,
The ones after it with Rathbone and Bruce are pretty bad IMHO what with their taking the films from the Victorian era and plopping them into the 1940s.
