- Basically stock '81 RS with Pilot Activs front and rear, 4/00 and 3.25
First day on a track, plagued by false neutrals at the end of the straight all day. I'll have to sort that out.
This was session 3, still playing with 2nd or 3rd on a couple of corners. Track is one mile/1.6 km long, 300 metre straight.
It's a training track not a race track, according to an official.
I reckon it's a racetrack on my RS!
The only machine that made me feel good in motorways (even raining). The best fairing ever.
I remember being given a riding lesson by a bloke on a GL1500 Goldwing while I was on my 1989 ZX10. That taught me a whole lot. Years later when on my H-D Superglide I gave the same lesson to a dude on a CBR600R. 😁😂😁 It's not always the horse, sometimes it's the jockey.
Ohhh , it's a hard Job with a original BMW R 100 👍🏁!

Thanks Michael, it was all great fun except for those false neutrals at the end of the straight. I've got another gearbox to swap in so I can pull it down and see why it's dropping out. Only does it when it gets hot and I'm pushing it 10/10.
I also ride it improperly too, off road!

Holy smoke Matey - I remember you told me about you going flat our having the bike 's guts or its side scraping troughout the corner. At that time I found it hard to believe as myself on top of a bike cant ride for crap - you then told me to check out the battlescars for myself. I gotta tell - your are bottom it out scraping pegs or whatevere it might bee - going flat out like this. Ohh my word - thats fast riding on that old bike. Love it .... i remember being astounded and schooled by a guy on an old beemer when i was thinking i was THE MAN on my brand new 509 speed triple . He had full touring gear on too 🤣🤣

Ha Ha. Excellent! Nice to get a look at the great old machine at the end. I had fun riding along with you during this practice session.
It looks like someone was out there taking pictures. It would be great to get ahold of some of those pix or footage to edit into your footage here.

Had an 82 RS now still have an 88 RS that I will probably never let go of. You can tour at 100mph all day, not something you can do on many other bikes 40 years old. It may not excel on the race track, but there is much more to motorcycling than that. I take mine out once in a while as a break from my more modern bikes, and it's still a lot of fun.
This RS has been my only bike for 28 years. I think it excelled at this little practice track with no really long straights, almost as tight as my favorite mountain roads where it really excels.
Full on dirt road adventures most always with a ton of camping gear are part of it's ability.
Nothing new takes my fancy as being better all round than the RS. And I can fix it.
About 2015, I was able to use very good oe painted parts as well as many other very good s/hand parts, which wiped 20 years of my patina off the bike.
Now it's slowly heading back into patina.
@@jeffr100rs Nice. Mine got a complete new suit of paint about the same time. Now I can just see a few chips here and there, usually by the front grill.
Love that you're still taking the bike to track days. I'm working on a '78 R80/7 on my channel and if I still have it in the spring will probably take it to the Utah Motorsports Campus outside of Salt Lake City. I've had my K1600GT there, and it ROCKS. Having something with a third of the power and half the weight would be soooo much fun! Check out our channel for all kinds of silliness...
There have been a few times I've raced guys on the street informally on my RS and it scared the heck out of me. Probably for the best. I did have enough sense to make sure the streets were completely clear & dry though, but the bike wallowed and shook quite a bit even though ridden smoothly. I confess I'd be afraid to ride it on the coarse. Unless it was limited to bikes under 90cc.
It doesn't take much to upset the handling on these RS.
Could be frame or fork damage from previous owners, or a number of other things.
When all is in order, high and low speed stability are there.
They shine at riding hard at low speed like in the tight mountains, where the playing field with sports bikes is much more even!
@@jeffr100rs It's the frame flex inherent in these bikes when pressed hard.
@@20111111jorg High speed uneven surface on big curves isn't the most stable of places to be on my RS because of 'everything flex', heavily loaded for touring in a straight line and nice sweepers at higher speed is planted. Lower speed high effort in the twisties is planted too.
This video is on a perfectly smooth surface, any frame flex was not an issue.
Recently bought a 1990 model. I also own a Tuono. Both are brilliant to ride. Sure the Beemer is down on bhp but on twisty A roads this will keep up with quite a lot if bikes out there. Interestingly I get a lot of positive comments on the bike when parked up. I'm the wrong side of 50 and grew up with sports bikes however the market has evolved - everyone I know who had a Blade, Gixer etc now has a GS, multistrada etc. I just wanted a quirky classic and couldn't be happier!
Good stuff.
On the right tight mountain road, the sports bikes can get in the way. Of course it's not hard to get past a lot of riders, but it can be hard, even futile to try and get past an RS on heat.
Love the engine so much the Tuono has gone for a GS1200 to keep my RS company. The RS is amazing - love the character - really is a great bike and puts a smile on my face everytime.

I pretty much ruined both covers that day. They're now turned upside down, only 50% worn, lol.

Thanks Peter, it was good to get on the track and experience the very smooth surface. I basically ruined both valve covers after 5 sessions on the track.
My RS performed really well, for what it is. Heaps of redline and just so trustworthy. The front end never gets ugly.

I manage to get two years of life out of it every year.

A hugely capable bike, on and off road, in my experience.
I’ve had mine about 28 years and no other bike appeals to me from that experience. I thinks it’s one of the best all purpose bikes ever built.
